Terrible air crash in India/UK

I was thinking the same thing **whitewavemark2 , I think the BBC have been quite ghoulish -reporters at Gatwick - why? Reporters outside the house of the known survivor those family must be in total shock. BBC Verify tracking the crash - to my mind totally unnecessary.

Unbelievably sad... I flew home from the Middle East only yesterday into Gatwick, so please it wasn't 24hrs later. I particularly like flying on a Dreamliner, such a shame.
The chap who survived, so lucky hope he's not traumatised for surviving the crash, his brother apprently was with him on the flight.
My thoughts are with everyone affected by this terrible accident.

Just watched a young man who had probably lost relatives being interviewed and the questions were ridiculous and fatuous.

And it came down on medical students in a hospital
So terribly sad and so frightening for all our families who regularly fly around the world
Those poor people their last moments must have been so terrifying

According to this report safety concerns have been raised about the structural safety of the Boeing Dreamliner due to manufacturing shortcuts.

It will be dreadful if that turns out to be the reason for the crash.

I remember sitting for what seemed like an age on the runway in Singapore years ago, lights not working, air con not working, and wanting to get off.
We had to stay where we were but all the passengers were getting nervous and restless in the suffocating heat. It took about an hour before we took off and, thankfully, had a good flight to Brisbane.

I know how you feel Sarnia. My daughter has flown home from Italy today (nowhere near as long a flight as your daughter).

Fortunately, I’ve just had a notification to say her plane has landed.

As others on here have said, statistically flying is one of the safest methods of transport.

My DF died in a plane crash in 1954. There were many fatal crashes that same year. There was an inquiry after his crash where several safety measures were proposed. I read the report 50 years later which exposed the shortcomings, so at least something good came from the horror.
His was an unusual crash because the crew survived but all the passengers died. The pilot actually took part in the inquiry.

I send my deep sympathy to the relatives of today's victims.

Air safety has greatly improved over the years and we rarely hear of major plane crashes but when we do it is still horrendous news.
I won't watch the news tonight as one of my daughters flies home from Brisbane at the weekend.
Thoughts with everyone who will be touched by this sad event.

Even more scary, and emotional for me as my son was due to leave India today. Mercifully, he leaves from Mumbai to LHR. A few tears of relief shed….

Our neighbour worked for Air India and had friends who were coming from Canada, stopping off in UK to visit them, en route to India in 1985. I remember that horrendous crash, almost exactly 40 years ago, vividly.

One man has survived the crash, amazingly. He has injuries but I wonder how he's feeling now.

RIP all those who died and thinking of their families.

GrannyGravy, although this has shocked us all, air travel is still the safest form of transport, far safer than travelling by roads.

Dreadful, I am a very nervous flyer and will be on a nine hour flight at the weekend.

I am now terrified.

You will be fine...I've just landed in Croatia.... pilot spoke to us lots throughout the flight....think he wanted to reassure the passengers that they were in safe hands
