Terrible air crash in India/UK

I don't think there is a lot to discuss, but I wanted to say how terribly sad it was that all those people on the way to the UK - UK citizens, families, business people - lost their lives, as well as many injuries and some deaths on the ground where it crashed.

Its unfolding on the BBC I player live feed.

Dreadful, I am a very nervous flyer and will be on a nine hour flight at the weekend.

I am now terrified.

RIP all those on the Air India flight 💐

Apparently the Indian contingent is our largest diaspora. Over 2 million reside in the U.K.

Bea65 Thu 12-Jun-25 14:58:24

Just moments into lift off.. praying for all victims and families and airline staff🙏 who have to fly on the next flights leaving..

Don't be. Flying is still statistically the safest mode of transport.

More importantly, aircraft are equipped with many safety systems to prevent failure.

Something obviously went terribly terribly wrong with this flight, and that is highly unusual.

The anticipation will be worse than the actual flight, once you're onboard I think you'll feel better. I say that because I am also a nervous flyer.

One man has survived the crash, amazingly. He has injuries but I wonder how he's feeling now.

RIP all those who died and thinking of their families.

GrannyGravy, although this has shocked us all, air travel is still the safest form of transport, far safer than travelling by roads.

This is such shocking news, so sorry for the victims and their families.

You will be fine...I've just landed in Croatia.... pilot spoke to us lots throughout the flight....think he wanted to reassure the passengers that they were in safe hands

Unimaginable, for that man.

I’ve been following the news. There are such strong historical and current links between our countries

Our neighbour worked for Air India and had friends who were coming from Canada, stopping off in UK to visit them, en route to India in 1985. I remember that horrendous crash, almost exactly 40 years ago, vividly.

Even more scary, and emotional for me as my son was due to leave India today. Mercifully, he leaves from Mumbai to LHR. A few tears of relief shed….

Blossoming Thu 12-Jun-25 16:12:19

That must have given you a jolt grandMattie, such a relief to know your son is safe.

grandMattie Thu 12-Jun-25 16:26:39

Oh, it did! Thank you.

And it landed on a hospital too sad. How awful.

Sarnia Thu 12-Jun-25 16:33:30

Air safety has greatly improved over the years and we rarely hear of major plane crashes but when we do it is still horrendous news.
I won't watch the news tonight as one of my daughters flies home from Brisbane at the weekend.
Thoughts with everyone who will be touched by this sad event.

Grammaretto Thu 12-Jun-25 16:53:31

My DF died in a plane crash in 1954. There were many fatal crashes that same year. There was an inquiry after his crash where several safety measures were proposed. I read the report 50 years later which exposed the shortcomings, so at least something good came from the horror.
His was an unusual crash because the crew survived but all the passengers died. The pilot actually took part in the inquiry.

I send my deep sympathy to the relatives of today's victims.

LizzieDrip Thu 12-Jun-25 16:59:41

Absolutely heartbreaking💔

I know how you feel Sarnia. My daughter has flown home from Italy today (nowhere near as long a flight as your daughter).

Fortunately, I’ve just had a notification to say her plane has landed.

As others on here have said, statistically flying is one of the safest methods of transport.

merlotgran Thu 12-Jun-25 17:13:53

How dreadful. There are no words. 😢

Grantanow Thu 12-Jun-25 17:33:25

Awful.

petra Thu 12-Jun-25 17:33:51

There is a very damming video taken by a passenger who was on this plane on its previous flight.
Air con not working
Lights not working
In flight entertainment not working.
His comment: no wonder it’s called the worst airline in the world.

I remember sitting for what seemed like an age on the runway in Singapore years ago, lights not working, air con not working, and wanting to get off.
We had to stay where we were but all the passengers were getting nervous and restless in the suffocating heat. It took about an hour before we took off and, thankfully, had a good flight to Brisbane.

How horrible, my thoughts and prayers for the families of those lost.

Casdon Thu 12-Jun-25 17:52:26

According to this report safety concerns have been raised about the structural safety of the Boeing Dreamliner due to manufacturing shortcuts.

It will be dreadful if that turns out to be the reason for the crash.

BlueBelle Thu 12-Jun-25 17:57:55

And it came down on medical students in a hospital
So terribly sad and so frightening for all our families who regularly fly around the world
Those poor people their last moments must have been so terrifying
