Israel attack on Iran

This is a serious situation. Netanyahu has gone against advice from the US and has attacked Iran.
Iran will retaliate and Israel has closed down today waiting for the attack.
Although the US has distanced itself from this only warning Iran not to target US bases it's inevitable that they may get pulled into this war.

We seem to have drifted along way from the OP.

It's relevant, though, because we may all be looking at them to defend us if those in charge cannot negotiate a peaceful settlement.

Let it go GG,we are all doing our best in a very challenging world.

There are some horrible fights going on here. What's the point?

There are some horrible fights going on here.

I did wonder why anyone should be surprised at all the conflicts in the world!

With a few exceptions, eeg military regimes, it is not Armed Forces which choose to go to war, it is politicians who will be safe in their bunkers.

The UK Armed Forces are highly skilled and are there for our defence.

I am going out with girlfriends to celebrate a dear friends ‘0’ birthday.

It will be a lovely seafood lunch, by the sea with champagne and laughter and recalling memories of many years.

GN will be far from my thoughts 🥂🎂🍤🦪🍾🍾🍸🍹🥂🥗

We're going out too, GrannyGravy

Have a lovely celebration 🥂 🍾

Military force is needed to protect us against despots that seek to dominate and exploit us is anyone seriously saying that we should not defend ourselves against Putin.

If so reveal yourself now!.

AGAA4 Sat 21-Jun-25 10:18:34

I am concerned that if the US get involved in this we can't be sure what China and Russia will do.
I think Trump will only get involved if there is financial gain for him. If he succeeds in destroying the bomb he will claim a US victory and the spoils of war for himself.
I don't think he is bothered about Israel at all.

The modern armed forces are very different to how they were in the 1940’s.
It’s 80 years ago.
Today it offers a real career choice along with making friends and seeing many different countries. The training includes making young men and women aware of the possibility of war and that they will have to kill or enable others to kill the enemies of their country. They don’t go into it ‘blind’.
It encourages responsibility and self sufficiency.

As for my fathers attitude towards the Armed Forces himself - a bit of a mixture. Absolute total disdain for the officers. Disdain for the way they had pay forcibly taken from them for "voluntary" contributions towards something like a wedding present for someone in the royal family. Finally - over 20 years later he went for them for making him deaf (as he put it "The officers got given protective head covering when dealing with guns - we didnt!"). Cue for he put in his own claim for extra pension for wrecking his hearing totally unnecessarily and then schooled his mates in how to do the same.....and they got extra too.

I appreciate that the families of servicemen @nd women will naturally be very concerned, because we are living in uncertain times, but I dont see any disrespect on this thread to our armed forces. We need them and appreciate what they do.

According to one poster our armed forces personnel are tricked/seduced into joining by promises of adventure, then let down…

My ex-Armed Forces father said - when I asked him why - "What else could a lad from a large poor family do? I knew I had to leave school when I did (despite the headmasters personal pleas to keep me there)".

He stayed in them basically because my mother wanted an Armed Forces husband - until he had a teenage daughter writing anti-War poems at school and who he knew would be ill again if he got posted again (because I was ill every time apparently).

So I'd say - at least in the past - it was because of lack of options in the case of my father (because of poverty).

I can't speak for younger men that have done so...though I suspect they're sold it on the grounds of foreign travel and learn a skill.............

100% agree with you Maremia.

Maremia Sat 21-Jun-25 08:46:36

Yes Claremont, the most 'disrespectful' thing against our armed forces is to take them into unnecessary war .

There was a report online a couple of days ago showing a surge of flights from China into Iran.
NATO meeting in the Netherlands from the 24th of June. This is bound to be o the agenda

Yes. I wonder whether it was weapons delivery? Can’t think what else.

Claremont Sat 21-Jun-25 08:39:31

War is sometimes necessary.

But far far too often, it is NOT. Israel didn't have to go to war with Iran. And we now know that going into Irak and Afghanistan was a disaster. WW1 was just a massacre on all sides. That does NOT, in any way disrespect our Armed Forces.

Children should not ever be recruited with the lure of some training and lots of fun. Never. Not in Germany, not in Africa, not anywhere. I shall withdraw from this thread.

My father was a soldier in WW2. He sometimes had nightmares about what he had seen. It took him a long time to talk about it.
I wouldn't want to see any of our armed forces go to war.
I did say earlier that I admired those men and women who would do that to defend our country.
They deserve our respect.

Our AC has been to Bosnia, Kuwait, Iraq and Afghanistan.

He has witnessed things nobody should.

I am immensely grateful and proud of them and their fellow combatants.

So do we 👏👏👏👏
Do try to ignore some members posts. I try but don’t always succeed 😥

Whitewavemark2 Sat 21-Jun-25 08:19:59

Reading overnight, that weapons experts are casting doubt on the so called “bunker buster” bomb’s ability to knock out the facility Iran has deep under a mountain.

Doubt has also been indicated on Israel’s strategic gamble to bring about regime change through violence. It is being suggested that if Israel kills Khamenei then this will endanger the whole region with instability and the real risk of bringing in the bigger powers.

China is already making noises over Israel’s activities, and I suspect Putin will not be far behind as Iran has been a good partner in Putin’s recent war.

The obvious choice it seems is to negotiate and get into place an agreement similar to the one agreed with Obama, the U.K., Germany and France in 2016.

What good is endless war?

A little respect for serving men and women in the UK wouldn’t come amiss.

Nobody wants war but there are times when it’s necessary.
