Oh Lordy, what now …this is scary news and now what happens..

NotSpaghetti Sun 22-Jun-25 08:29:08

I'm not sure Starmer was really backing Trump Grandmabatty
I'll have to listen again.
He wasn't condemning him - though that's not quite the same!

NotSpaghetti Sun 22-Jun-25 08:30:33

I thought, like others above that he called for negotiations... but as I said, need to listen again.

Grandmabatty Sun 22-Jun-25 08:33:04

He did call for Iran to return to the negotiating table but his early part of the speech basically said USA was right.

The last I heard, starmer continued to call for negotiations. Sir Kim Darragh our former US ambassador expressed the view that if Trump asks to use our bases in Cyprus, that we’d have to agree based on historical allies.
It’s very scary that we have an unpredictable dictator in America bombing people he says are unpredictable dictators.
Also great distraction from Gaza

Wars are not the way to settle our differences. They never were but for some reason, somewhere in the usually male psyche, the boys are desperate to use their toys.

I'm reminded of the Tom Lehrer song;
First we got the bomb and that was good, cos we love peace and brotherhood.
Then Russia got the bomb and that's OK as the balance of power's maintained that way.....
and so on until at the end it goes;
Egypt wants make one too, just to drop on you know who..

Chilling

If it can be contained within the region, bad as it is for those poor souls living there, we can hope that it will soon be over, but if the bigger powers get involved then I am fearful. But honestly apart from China muttering I haven’t heard much else.

China doesn’t want its supply of cheap oil cut off, it does sell arms to Iran but has no particular love of them, their priority will be to have a quick ceasefire.

Iran like Hamas is full of bravado but hopelessly out gunned, it’s terrorist proxies weakened, let’s hope there will be a quick conclusion that brings permanent peace to the region.

Proliferation was always going to be our downfall- we tried to warn, in vain. This idea that somehow only the 'goodies in the West' could have them, was never going to work. And the 'goodies in the West' have turned out to be the very 'baddies'- with their stooge in the Middle East.

Luckygirl3 Sun 22-Jun-25 08:59:39

Starmer is walking a tightrope - doesn't want to get embroiled but doesn't want to scupper any possible trade/tariff deals for UK.

Rock and a hard place.

nanna8 Sun 22-Jun-25 09:05:03

Trade deals will be the least of his worries with what is going on now.

Shinamae Sun 22-Jun-25 09:05:26

I refuse to worry about something. I have absolutely no control over…

In the age of outsourcing, how possible would it be for Iran to buy in nuclear weapons from somewhere like North Korea?

Claremont Sun 22-Jun-25 09:17:59

Not long ago, we were made to believe the Indians were the bad guys, and the white settler the good guys. Russia was our staunch ally, and Germany the worst possible enemy. Who decides re nuclear weapons, and what happens when the above changes and turns around? It was never going to work- and tactical nuclear weapons have give the illusion that MAD no longer applies.

fancythat Sun 22-Jun-25 09:20:43

I was not expecting him to do that.
Though I have been away and not kept up with news, even as much as I normally do.

Doesnt at all seem the right thing to do, from what little I do know.

Cabowich Sun 22-Jun-25 09:22:24

How, exactly, is Iran able to retaliate? Why is the situation so worrying? I don't quite get it.

If Trump has incapacitated any nuclear weapons the Iranians might have had, what have they got left? Some missiles which might not have the ability to reach America?

Please somebody explain why the situation is so dangerous.

Trump’s particular style seems to imply that he and he alone decides when to drop bombs and when not. I would be very worried if I lived in America as democracy doesn’t seem to be working. Is it really possible that Trump is able to make such life and death decisions in a political vacuum?

I keep thinking the same thing about Trump doing what he likes.

Galaxy Sun 22-Jun-25 09:29:25

Germany was the worst possible enemy. Obviously things change over time this doesn't mean they weren't true.

Yes. Too true unfortunately 😔

Startmer appears to agree with what Trump has done.
I am totally out of the loop on what has just happened.

Kandinsky Sun 22-Jun-25 09:52:25

Really scared now that WW3 is starting.

JenniferEccles Sun 22-Jun-25 10:06:48

Iran apparently has a number of secretly placed nuclear enrichment facilities, buried far underground in mountainous areas, well protected from attack.
The US has ‘bunker busting bombs’ which it’s said are powerful enough to destroy the facility.

Trump has said the mission was successful.

I can understand the fear and concerns expressed on here, but isn’t this possibly good news?

Does the world really want a country like Iran to be permitted to continue building its nuclear arsenal?

GrannyGravy13 Sun 22-Jun-25 10:07:07

There is an almost deafening silence from the Countries in the area.

Iran is a rogue state, it is known for sponsoring terrorism throughout the world, it beats women for not conforming, throws gays off of buildings and generally terrorises its own people if they do not tow the line.

An Iran with nuclear capabilities would be an even bigger threat to the world.

GrannyGravy13 Sun 22-Jun-25 10:07:43

toe not tow 🤬

lafergar Sun 22-Jun-25 10:16:27

I have some very nice Iranian friends.
