Oh Lordy, what now …this is scary news and now what happens..

Trade deals will be the least of his worries with what is going on now.

Starmer is walking a tightrope - doesn't want to get embroiled but doesn't want to scupper any possible trade/tariff deals for UK.

Rock and a hard place.

Proliferation was always going to be our downfall- we tried to warn, in vain. This idea that somehow only the 'goodies in the West' could have them, was never going to work. And the 'goodies in the West' have turned out to be the very 'baddies'- with their stooge in the Middle East.

If it can be contained within the region, bad as it is for those poor souls living there, we can hope that it will soon be over, but if the bigger powers get involved then I am fearful. But honestly apart from China muttering I haven’t heard much else.

China doesn’t want its supply of cheap oil cut off, it does sell arms to Iran but has no particular love of them, their priority will be to have a quick ceasefire.

Iran like Hamas is full of bravado but hopelessly out gunned, it’s terrorist proxies weakened, let’s hope there will be a quick conclusion that brings permanent peace to the region.

Wars are not the way to settle our differences. They never were but for some reason, somewhere in the usually male psyche, the boys are desperate to use their toys.

I'm reminded of the Tom Lehrer song;
First we got the bomb and that was good, cos we love peace and brotherhood.
Then Russia got the bomb and that's OK as the balance of power's maintained that way.....
and so on until at the end it goes;
Egypt wants make one too, just to drop on you know who..

Chilling

The last I heard, starmer continued to call for negotiations. Sir Kim Darragh our former US ambassador expressed the view that if Trump asks to use our bases in Cyprus, that we’d have to agree based on historical allies.
It’s very scary that we have an unpredictable dictator in America bombing people he says are unpredictable dictators.
Also great distraction from Gaza

He did call for Iran to return to the negotiating table but his early part of the speech basically said USA was right.

NotSpaghetti Sun 22-Jun-25 08:30:33

I thought, like others above that he called for negotiations... but as I said, need to listen again.

NotSpaghetti Sun 22-Jun-25 08:29:08

I'm not sure Starmer was really backing Trump Grandmabatty
I'll have to listen again.
He wasn't condemning him - though that's not quite the same!

LizzieDrip Sun 22-Jun-25 08:25:30

Oh Lord!

Just woken up to this dreadful newssad

Wyllow3 Sun 22-Jun-25 08:14:00

I wonder if it will rebound on Trump, as certainly initially he promised the nation he would not get involved in any more wars. If those in his own party don't agree it will be a welcome split. Anyone au fait with this?

Trump’s particular style seems to imply that he and he alone decides when to drop bombs and when not. I would be very worried if I lived in America as democracy doesn’t seem to be working. Is it really possible that Trump is able to make such life and death decisions in a political vacuum?

Oh I so agree!

Pakistan has put forward Trump for the Nobel peace prize.

😀 they must be kicking themselves now! Perhaps they put his name forward in the hope he would not attack Iran?

Whitewavemark2 Sun 22-Jun-25 08:08:52

I think it is called a dictatorship.

Apparently the big bombs were used. Trump is claiming complete obliteration.

I doubt it.

But if he is correct - then job done. Everyone can go home and peace reigns.

Grandmabatty Sun 22-Jun-25 07:58:55

He posted on twitter that Iran couldn't have nuclear weapons or something similar and USA was right. I'm paraphrasing but that was the gist of it

argymargy Sun 22-Jun-25 07:57:49

Trump, who kept going on about how there were “no wars” when he was last president. We all thought he meant that was a GOOD thing…

Whitewavemark2 Sun 22-Jun-25 07:57:10

What I am certain of though is that in another decade Israel will be in the same position once again, unless it is willing to negotiate.

It appears that Keir Starmer is verbally backing Trump. That doesn't augur well

Oh, I thought he was calling for calm and the re-start of negotiations.

Someone is suggesting Trump should be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.......
