Is Sir Keir In The Last Chance Saloon?

A replacement PM? Then another? And another?

The Conservatives went through an astonishing period of Revolving Door Prime Ministers, so I wonder if we will be about to witness the same in the Labour Party, now that Keir Starmer appears to have lost his authority?

This really is Alice in Wonderland politics.

There was no rebellion- the government won the vote and that's the end of it until next time which is probably today if the media are to be believed...

Meanwhile recently elected Reformers are leaking from the posts they have been elected to and no one blinks an eyelid...

So Labour won a vote but, according to the media are losers. And yet Reform lose a bye election (or whatever it was in Scotland?) but are treated by the media as victors in some way. All very confusing.

Perhaps he didn’t want to have to do yet another u turn?

Oh yes. Headlines in the tabloids the next day ‘Starmer says Reeves has to Go’. No one knows if Reeves will remain in the post; Starmer was wise not to answer it. Especially as, if she does eventually go, it will be branded as another u turn, When the Conservatives were still in power but the cabinet was changing almost on a daily basis; if that was classed as U-turns can anyone tell me how many that would have been?

I am not a fan of Rachel Reeves’s economic model, but flipping heck is the Labour Party that desperate to prove unity that she was sitting on the Front Bench crying.

Is there no duty of care, no Human Resources personnel?

The PM has sunk further in my estimation after this…

Maybe she was told that she didn’t have to be there but she felt it was her duty to, and thought she would be able to contain her emotions? If so she should be applauded for it. Imo

Her spokesperson has said it is personal, so I hope people are not too unkind. I thought the Sky News presenters were seriously out of order, discussing it at length as the first report on PMQs.

As yet, we don’t know why. I can think of no other politician crying on the front bench whatever the reason. If she’s having some sort of breakdown then she should be off sick until she has recovered. I do think she looks worlds away from when she was in opposition. Be careful what you wish for perhaps. She is a human being, stressed beyond belief and a hate figure. Not easy to deal with.

I’ve just read on bbc news that Rachel Reeves has stepped down

ronib Wed 02-Jul-25 15:06:12

My BBC news shows no such information Iam64

Iam64 Wed 02-Jul-25 15:10:11

Well apologies ronib, neither does mine. I picked up that fake news after asking google. I’ve checked the bbc site and you’re correct it’s nit therev

Witzend Wed 02-Jul-25 15:12:58

Probably. A nice, evidently well meaning man, but IMO weak and indecisive.

Who would be better, though? That’s the 64 thousand dollar question. Is there anybody??

Andy Burnham was suggested some years ago, but he turned that poisoned chalice down.

woodenspoon Wed 02-Jul-25 15:19:11

Exactly, who would be better? Theres nobody out there, anywhere. All are poor and I can’t think of any outstanding leadership candidates in any party. I won’t be voting for Kemi Badenoch that’s for sure.

Years ago we were spoiled for choice. If one was forced out, there was always somebody or several to choose from. Those days are over.

Iam64 Wed 02-Jul-25 15:19:24

Andy Burnham stood twice for the leadership before deciding being king of Manchester would be a good move

Mine too WW and Sky reporters are at the front of the pack.

Anniebach Wed 02-Jul-25 15:30:01

Andy Burnham didn’t get the votes , he stood twice

Labour won the vote but only because of last minute concessions which rendered Starmer's welfare cuts legislation pointless.
Rachel Reeves had clearly spent a sleepless night worrying herself sick about how will compensate for the £4.5billion lost by concessions to back-benchers with no understanding of the seriousness of the situation, made 90 minutes before the final vote.

He’s not an MP though, so it would be a big gamble for him to give up the job (and power that goes with it) that he does well now, stand as an MP, uproot his family, then for Sir Keir to resign, and him to top the leadership contest against other candidates. It doesn’t seem a likely scenario. If we’re talking previous ministers, I’d prefer David Milliband who was the one that got away I think.

Some very interesting speculation here with absolutely zero evidence for any of it...

Maremia Wed 02-Jul-25 16:09:03

When you wonder about what the Media publishes, all you have to do is consider who owns our MSM.

I’ve just seen this on bbc news. I don’t like her policies but she should have been excused from appearing. It benefits nobody to see this woman crying on the front bench. Somebody somewhere should have taken her to one side and let her skip the session. Duty of care.

Totally agree, the poor woman, not a good look for a caring government.

Rubbish! She’s in full view on the TV crying. That’s not speculation it’s fact!

Oreo Wed 02-Jul-25 16:22:38

But we don’t know why.

woodenspoon Wed 02-Jul-25 16:33:39

No, we don’t know why. Some say a row with Lindsay Hoyle, others with Starmer. That is speculation but it’s not to say she was crying. She was. In my view it should never have happened. What does it say about Labour that they allowed this woman to appear, beamed all round the UK and the world, crying. Can you see Trump allowing this? Or anywhere else. She’s clearly under immense strain and the employer has a duty of care towards her. It’s shameful.

Yes, I agree about David Miliband, and personally I still blame Ed for his arrogance and hubris in thinking he was PM material, when so many people disagreed - except the more extreme Left, of course. IMO if he’d left it to David we wouldn’t have had Cameron, and we probably wouldn’t have had Brexit.
How he’s still got the nerve to be ‘serving the country’ in government I don’t know.
