Eh????

Thank you butterandjam. I thought that was so, but doubted myself after reading the articles about the Dalai Lama or China choosing his successor.

The Dalai Lama does not choose his successor.

After he dies, his reincarnation will be sought out and identified by his inner circle of monks in a series of signs, visions and tests.

It can take years for them to discover and recognise the new incarnation,

But how can it be before his death because if he is reincarnated then the new Dalai Lama can’t be born until the old one is dead.

I don’t understand and I can’t find anything that explains it so that I can.

This would be just as absurd as the Italian government insisting on choosing the next pope.

Yes, I think that's an excellent parallel.

My (far from authoritative) understanding is that the DL will hear who will succeed him from his God, and this will obviously be before his death, so he can pass it on. The Chinese want to step in and decide for him, which would be exactly like the Italian government choosing the Pope. Worse really, as they are a conquering regime in Tibet.

Umm I’m willing to be corrected but I don’t see how the Dalai Lama can chose his successor because his successor will not be born until after his own death.

It’s not possible to chose the Dalai Lama only to discover or reveal him surely since he is the ongoing living reincarnation.

Chinese government is saying it will have to approve (basically choose) the successor. Dalai Lama is saying he will reincarnated through traditional methods, possibly outside Tibet.

Sorry not to get back to you all sooner (Dad unwell ) but Baggs link is the story I was alluding to - there may be trouble ahead as you say WWM2!

Doodledog Thu 03-Jul-25 12:13:58

The Dalai Lama is getting on, and traditionally chooses his successor (via reincarnation in their faith) but the Chinese are insisting that the incoming DL be chosen by them.

Baggs

I think this may be the article mentioned: www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c5y772jlpgzo

It appears to be about monks' resistance to Chinese rule.

Oh yes - read something about that.

The current Dali Lama was never China’s choice, and I think that they are insisting that they have a say in the next one, whereas I think it is the live/soul of the Dali Lama should pass to the one of his choice.

That certainly could spell trouble.
