New ^left^ political party?

Suspended Labour MP Zarah Sultana is all over the media since the 10pm news last night.

She has announced that along with Jeremy Corbyn she is launching a new political party to heal a broken Westminster

Are there still enough Corbynistas to get this of the ground?

Will it cause the current Labour Front Bench to have a rethink on its direction?

One late night banter between Chris Leslie and Tom Brake was the stuff of legend. I wish I could watch it again. It had me in stitches.

There were some good MP’s in that party. Chris Leslie was a favourite of mine. And several good Conservative MP’s joined it including Anna Soubry ( another one who wouldn’t serve under Johnson). Let’s not forget that it was Keir who sorted out the anti semitism in the Labour Party ( one of the reasons why Change UK was formed).

A few Tories did join Change UK, but it seemed to fizzle out quite quickly . I think a lot of it was down to Labour and Conservative MPs being fed up with their parties.
Going way back, I can remember when the SDP was formed in 1981, when Mrs Thatcher was very unpopular and Labour was becoming too extreme. This seemed to be a commonsense option at the time and had political heavyweights like Shirley Williams and Roy Jenkins as members, but never achieved massive success after the first year of existence and gradually died out.

All these complaints about the BBC. Presumably as its output makes it clear to you that it has a left wwing bias, people can listen to it and make an allowance for this.

Or are you suggesting that while you are superior enough to be able to see the bias and allow for it, other people are too stupid to do so. hmmm.

I was rather assuming that they might agree with BBC output.

Newspapers are biased towards scares and scandal and generally anti government whoever is in power. The BBC has a distinctly leftist agenda, they probably have a big influence on “creating” the news. Social Media including GN reflects the view of the contributors, very left wing.

It would be remarkable if you could point to data that showed the left wing bias of the BBC😊

Do you approve of the way BBC reports on topics ?.

I can remember Ghange UK, the last party to be formed by disillusioned Labour MPs. It did nothing at the 2019 election and split up. I can't see Corbyn's new party achieving much, given the record of left wing parties over here. People in the main don't want this sort of thing.

MayBee70 Sat 05-Jul-25 13:12:16

Who’s funding this new party?

This party will fail, same as all splinter parties from Labour. It will probably gain some support from Corbyn's old mates in Momentum and in Muslim areas, but will fail to get more than 5% of the vote. Radical left parties do nothing over here as people aren't interested.

Anniebach Sat 05-Jul-25 11:32:51

BBC are left wing ? definitely not

I was also being ironic. Unbiased media would be a blessing, but I agree it’s not going to happen anytime soon.

I agree Doodledog.

The UK media, owned by oligarchs, has contributed to (maybe even created) the huge divisions in our society.

They lie; gaslight; and deceive, for their own ends. The media no longer reports the news; it aims to create the news; a ‘news’ that reflects the views of its owners.

Facts, truth, critical thinking - all gone!

This country would be a much happier place if we had an unbiased media. Sadly, the genie is now out of the bottle, and won’t ever go back in.

So if Corbyn becomes the leader of the new left wing party, I expect we can all look forward to him being on QT week after week after week, just like Farage.

That would make a refreshing change. It would be good to have socialist policies aired and who knows, even discussed for once.

No chance!

I agree, No Chance!

But I loved your irony, WWmk2 grin

I am fed up with all this. You should never get rid of Boris Johnson or po-po the Conservatives.

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

monica “All parties must be populist. Being populist means being democratic and offering people policies they will vote for.”

I think that you are confusing populist with popular.

“Populism” is actually an accepted concept (although a bit thin) that describes political parties that claim to represent “Ordinary people” as opposed to say for example the “elite” or some other identified group. Its main characteristic is to create division in society. So typically you can see this in action in Reform, Trumpism, and to a limited extent Johnson’s government. However, populism is not confined to the right wing, it can also be identified in the left. Zimbabwe
, and the ANC are examples.

Populism has nothing to do with democracy, indeed it often seeks to limit democracy.

Anniebach Fri 04-Jul-25 16:38:23

There was Liberal then Social,Democrat, then Liberal Democrat, and for a few years a coalition Liberal Democrat with Conservative

RosieandherMaw Fri 04-Jul-25 16:30:13

So if Reform is to the Right of the Tory party and Jeremy Corbyn’s new party is positioning itself to the Left of the Labour Party what happens to the Lib Dems?
Can you get any more “middle of the road “ without disappearing down a pot hole?
