Makes you proud to be British...NOT!

2 days and 2 further reports, One on the Post Office scandal deemed to be the biggest miscarriage of justice in the UK and the other on the Infected Blood scandal deemed to be the worst in the history of the NHS.
Both reports criticise past and present Governments on their cruelly long drawn out compensation payments.
One elderly Asian man struggling to hold back the tears when he said his job was to protect his family but he was put in jail. No sign of those responsible being put inside.
Will these 2 damning reports finally spur Starmer & Co to do the decent thing? Frankly, I doubt it. Makes you proud to be British.

I put in the key words of magic money tree. You are there a number of times.

Not a phrase I use, so I'm surprised at that.

*Petra8 has said it all, really. Thanks, Petra

It sprouts out of that black hole, I think.

Where did the money go that the Post office workers paid ‘back’? It must have gone somewhere? They kept paying back until many of them went to prison…..where’s the money?

I believe that the end of year profits declared by the Post Office for several years running were inflated by money that employees had been forced to pay back.

This does not answer the question 'Where did the money go?' but possibly some of it went towards paying the salaries of the senior managers who oversaw the debacle.

I think all governments delay compensation schemes to save money ey. They hope people will settle for less, die or simply give up.

I totally agree with you. It's dismal.

You have been studying economics for what, 55 years?
Surely with all that knowledge you could put forward your argument as to why MazieD is wrong without having to resort to searching for articles to support your argument?
Note there were no links in the post mentioned.

not sure what key words to use to find them
And yet you’re dismissing MaizieD’s explanation. What have you searched to come to your belief that MD is wrong.

I knew it was utterly wrong from studying economics from age 16.

I do not do word games if this is to come to that.

I do not do endless links and explanations either.
Though I must say that that aspect of what used to be demanded by several, has receded a lot since about 2 years ago. Thankfully.

hjmhill Fri 11-Jul-25 09:03:34

Some of the problem is the involvement of lawyers. They often advise people not to accept the compensation on offer and to go for more. This can result in years of delay.

I don’t know how old you are or where you live. But did you ever wonder where the money came from to achieve the London slum clearance. Where the money came from to build the new towns where people were moved out to when their homes were demolished. Where the money came from to rebuild our decimated Army, Navy, Airforce. New schools, etc.
How did we build the wonderful Concord.
All the answers are in MaizieD’s reply.

I never agree with MaizieD on this issue.

If so, the whole world would be fully of daisys and dancing.

What don’t you agree with?

The magic money tree.

We have discussed it several times before.
As has at least one other poster with you. If not multiple.

Remind me. I have a Senior memory.

I have never, IIRC, been given an alternative and coherent, evidence based, explanation of how our economy works. Or where our money comes from.

I’m mystified that so many folk continue to believe in fairy tales, despite all evidence to the contrary 🤔

I am not sure I can be bothered to find them all. Or even one.
But I may do later sometime.
Not sure yet what key words to use to find them.

The Tories had 14 years to "sort things out" Sir Keith Starmer has had 12 months, give him a chance for goodness sake.

None of this needed to happen if Tony Blair had listened to the alarm bells ringing the warning that the £5 billion system was faulty.
It was rumoured that the trade deal with Japan was in jeopardy if the purchase wasn’t agreed.
I would imagine that his minions whispered in his ear that it could be fixed once it was up and running.
Yes, it could have been fixed but the PO preferred to believe that 100s of their employees were thieves 🤬

Why isn't Fujitsu paying the compensation? The taxpayer probably wouldn't mind paying a little extra to help or there could be some Quantitive Easing but a lot of the fault lies with the software company who were blatantly changing the figures whilst telling those that asked that it couldn't be done.

I hope that this Government do the right thing and payout the compensation. Government have known years what is morally right. Terrible injustice.
Proud! I’m afraid until we have decent government in this country that is difficult.

What do you believe ‘the decent thing’ would be? I think that’s the fair outcome, but I don’t actually know what it is, obviously there’s a financial compensation aspect, but that’s not the whole answer?

They could start the ball rolling by giving back any of the money that some of the victims were forced to pay. Even if the specific individual is due more, it would be a start

I think they are trying hard. I also think Sunak tried hard. It’s such a mess.

Sunak’s back working for Morgan Stanley to supplement his MP’s wages…
