Makes you proud to be British...NOT!

2 days and 2 further reports, One on the Post Office scandal deemed to be the biggest miscarriage of justice in the UK and the other on the Infected Blood scandal deemed to be the worst in the history of the NHS.
Both reports criticise past and present Governments on their cruelly long drawn out compensation payments.
One elderly Asian man struggling to hold back the tears when he said his job was to protect his family but he was put in jail. No sign of those responsible being put inside.
Will these 2 damning reports finally spur Starmer & Co to do the decent thing? Frankly, I doubt it. Makes you proud to be British.

Yes, Starmer could gain quite a few points by setting bombs (metaphorically speaking) under whoever is supposed to be sorting these appalling messes out.
Why on earth doesn’t he???

Crossstitchfan Wed 09-Jul-25 16:53:27

Starmer is about as useless as any other PM has been. I wouldn’t trust any of them with even dishing up a rice pudding! I have grave doubts about the future of this country with this shower running it. It is scary!
It isn’t just a case of voting for a different party either as they are all people lacking braincells, not to mention common sense. People say they feel sorry for the US having to cope with Trump. Why are we feeling sorry for them when we have Starmer?? God help us!

Another post blaming Starmer for everything that’s wrong about this country sad?

Have another read of my OP. Both reports lay blame on the Tories AND Labour.

No, it's posts about the Post Office Scandal and the Infected Blood scandal.

If it were about blaming Starmer it would no doubt be headed up as such.

Why, but why is there ALWAYS someone (often the same "someones") who cannot comment without trying to disprove the original hypothesis, or indulging in political point scoring, or trying to pick a bl***y argument?

Casdon Wed 09-Jul-25 17:06:04

What do you believe ‘the decent thing’ would be? I think that’s the fair outcome, but I don’t actually know what it is, obviously there’s a financial compensation aspect, but that’s not the whole answer?

Grantanow Wed 09-Jul-25 17:20:57

I think all governments delay compensation schemes to save money ey. They hope people will settle for less, die or simply give up.

Quite.

Or any Uk government for that matter.

Shameful. And worse.

fancythat Wed 09-Jul-25 17:38:18

In both these cases, the blame lies at the feet of a Uk government.
Does it not?

Well he is supposed to be in charge! It’s no good living in the past and keep raking up about previous Governments. We need to concentrate on NOW and it is looking very gloomy and depressing.

I voted Labour for many years as did all my family and my neighbourhood but I would never vote for Starmer.

lafergar Wed 09-Jul-25 17:49:44

What is the connection between these 2 historic reports and Starmer please?

The scandals are just that. They have gone on for years.

Starmer is PM now. Nobody can work backwards?

Bridie22 Wed 09-Jul-25 18:36:18

Maybe Starmer can't work backwards, but surely moving forward is what's needed, people in the blood infection scandal have been waiting 40 years for compensation, this is insane, Starmer could be the one to finally pay out to them and the post office workers.
The length of time these people have waited for closure is disgraceful!

You may well ask!🤬

It's the individual against the state. Noone will take responsibility or realise the enormity of what has happened. They will just feel so lucky to not be singled out.

The inability to make quick decisions when compensation is involved, and adding insult to injury shows how weak and uncaring these people are. I'm sure they know who they are.

With respect and apologies I was reacting to this…not the OP.

But what about forwards?

He himself has had 1 year
And counting...

Granmarderby10 Wed 09-Jul-25 19:10:05

I will also add the veterans (victims) of the atomic testing and their children and grandchildren that was carried out by the British government in the 1950s…..still waiting…..😢

Exactly this. It’s shameful and obscene.

Casdon Wed 09-Jul-25 19:27:13

The Post Office situation is just not that straightforward.
www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2025/jul/08/post-office-horizon-it-scandal-five-things-we-learned-from-the-report#:~:text=There%20are%20about%2010%2C000%20eligible,June%2C%20according%20to%20the%20government.
The fact that people who have been, or who claim to have been, affected are still coming forward, and the complexity of some of the cases and claims and counter claims for compensation mean that inevitably there isn’t going to be a neat line drawn under this for some time - over 7000 compensation payments have been made, but there isn’t a magic wand to tidy it all up, whoever is in government.
I think the Infected Blood scandal should be resolved however, it’s been going for so long and the victims have been clearly identified. More resources need to be put into resolving the outstanding claims - the funding is set aside, and there is a process, it’s just taking too long as I understand it.

M0nica Wed 09-Jul-25 19:51:42

I have come to the conclusion that Keir Starmer is the Labour party's David Cameron.

Casdon Wed 09-Jul-25 19:53:00

It could be worse then M0nica!

M0nica Wed 09-Jul-25 20:08:26

Well, at least Starmer cannot take us out of Europe!! but not much worse.

Wouldn't their heirs still get the money? Awful if that's the case as I'm sure they suffered as well.
