Why oh why does Farage get so much media coverage? The Lib Dem’s have 10xs more MPs , Greens have the same plus more councillors, would that they got the same attention.

Because it’s in the economic interests of the right wing, wealthy media oligarchs to promote Reform.

They have always promoted the Tories but see Reform as a better bet now.

At all costs the media elite do not want progressive parties, who might increase taxes for the wealthy etc, to succeed.

So, get Nigel on TV at every opportunity; get his views on everything; plaster his comments across newspaper front pages … make the electorate believe he’s far more credible than he actually is.

Propaganda … it works!

Like rearranging the deckchairs on the Titanic.

MaizieD Tue 22-Jul-25 14:11:18

If Labour doesn't rearrange a few deckchairs soon they will sink with the tories...

I find myself in the very strange position of agreeing with both ronib and FGT

But I think so many people are disgusted by Reform that more progressive parties may have the edge.

I think, though, to avoid dominance by Reform Labour has to up its game and stop trying to be more right wing than the right or it has to introduce PR...

ronib Tue 22-Jul-25 11:38:42

I have a husband who likes to be right as in correct. It must have some effect on my worldview…..*Casdon*.
In any event, you are dealing with imponderables. I don’t relish a government led by Farage but he definitely knows how to appeal to the masses. Starmer take note…. Please.

Time will tell. I admire optimism Casdon even if misplaced.

Are you a foreigner to optimism though ronib? I find it sustains me.

I think it’s a toxic brand now. Tainted anyway. Voters have long memories and 14 years of Tory promises not being kept won’t just wash away with the soap suds.

Do you think? I don’t, I think the combination of Labour and stronger Tory will work.;

ronib Tue 22-Jul-25 10:48:14

The trouble is that Farage is more than capable of repudiating any criticism from Cleverly. Cleverly is also a reminder from the past. The Conservatives do stand on their record in government and this will give Farage an advantage. Voters will be desperate four years down the line if Labour doesn’t step up and really improve Britain. That’s the best way to deter Farage.

Casdon Tue 22-Jul-25 10:40:18

Cleverly is high profile and well thought of. He is a strong personality, and won’t stand nonsense. I disagree with ronib, in that I can see him and the government mounting simultaneous attacks on Farage, specifically about his wild claims of utopia, which hasn’t been possible with Badenoch.

I hope you are right Whitewavemark, he’s not my favourite politician, but he is definitely credible.

ronib Tue 22-Jul-25 10:27:03

Cleverly isn’t going to stop Farage increasing his chances. Ben Habib is critical of Farage but I don’t think even he will make much of a difference. In 4 years time, this country will be desperate for real change I guess. An effective Labour government would be the best response to Farage ….

Whitewavemark2 Tue 22-Jul-25 10:21:12

She is taking a risk.

Her time is limited and Cleverly will definitely be a front runner.

Casdon Tue 22-Jul-25 10:12:12

The good news this morning is that Kemi Badenoch is shortly to announce a shadow cabinet reshuffle. It’s expected that James Cleverly will return to the front bench, and possibly some other prominent former ministers. I hope this is a sign that they are moving forward and can form the credible opposition we need, not just to challenge the government but to help put some of the Reform pie in the sky politicking to bed. Fingers crossed.
