Shadow Cabinet Reshuffle

The good news this morning is that Kemi Badenoch is shortly to announce a shadow cabinet reshuffle. It’s expected that James Cleverly will return to the front bench, and possibly some other prominent former ministers. I hope this is a sign that they are moving forward and can form the credible opposition we need, not just to challenge the government but to help put some of the Reform pie in the sky politicking to bed. Fingers crossed.

Reform is riding high now, but there is a lot of time before the GE. Discontented voters might realise that Reform have no clear vision or policies when they start to be questioned more closely, and there are new parties coming along that might soak up their votes. Corbyn's is one, and there is also Majority, which is an alliance of independents sharing an umbrella. There may well be more before the GE, and by then we'll have a better idea of how Starmer has done, too.

I’ll be surprised if Badenoch leads them into the next election

Maybe she will, maybe not, too early to tell, my prediction is there will be a lot of Tory voters change to Reform if Badenoch leads them.

I can accurately predict that if there’s a catastrophic result for the Conservatives in 2029, Badenoch will be replaced.

Badenoch may surprise people by still being in the job in four years time. The one thing you can’t do in politics is predict anything with accuracy.

Which means the Tories won't win the next election.

No, they won't. Badenoch really doesn't have what it takes and doesn't seem to have a good team of advisers - or maybe she doesn't listen to them. If I were a Conservative, the problem would be that I don't know who they've got who could do the job. Jenrick is doing all the right things to be leader, but I doubt very much if he has election-winning potential. Cleverly is possibly one of the best of a very bad bunch, but he's not exactly inspirational. He might stand a chance if the country had had 14 years of a Labour government and just wanted a change, but he's not going to have that advantage.

Badenoch is a disaster for the Conservative party. Thank goodness she stands virtually no chance of ever being Prime Minister, so won't be a disaster for the country. She hasn't a clue about the issues which really concern people and hasn't any idea about economics.

I must admit I can't see anybody in the party with leadership potential, who could rebuild a viable party with coherent aims. There's a gaping hole to be filled for the centre-right. Nevertheless, the Conservatives do have an amazing instinct for survival. Maybe Cleverly has more people behind him than we think - who knows?

Casdon Thu 24-Jul-25 19:06:29

As business is still backing the Conservative Party, not Reform, and the rules around overseas donations to political parties are changing, I dare say the Tories will be back sooner than some of us predict.

Galaxy Thu 24-Jul-25 18:59:27

I think at the moment it is largely irrelevant. I think it is going to be a long road before they become relevant again, don't know if Cleverly is the person to change that. He doesn't appeal to me but that doesn't mean much.

growstuff Thu 24-Jul-25 17:10:19

Does anybody have any views on the Conservative reshuffle?

sundowngirl Thu 24-Jul-25 17:05:53

Madeleine45 what an extremely rude arrogant and opinionated person you seem to be. Calling people pathetic because they don’t have the same opinion as you about Reform.
Your last paragraph about politicians who fail to keep the promises they made before they were in government just about sums up Keir Starmer.

Dorisdodar Thu 24-Jul-25 16:50:20

Madeleine45....I think you are being very rude to call people stupid or pathetic who vote for NF or Reform...

Oreo Thu 24-Jul-25 16:43:29

😁

Galaxy Thu 24-Jul-25 16:23:10

Yeah thanks for that, the right certainly understood that much earlier than the left.

MaizieD Thu 24-Jul-25 16:21:44

The term 'media' covers a great deal more than newspapers, Galaxy.

We have the best government we have had in many years

Totally agree Iam64 👏👏👏

which just shows how terrible the previous ones were.

Galaxy Thu 24-Jul-25 15:27:24

I don't think they are wrong as such, I think left and right aren't really the right words anymore. I think it is more class based than that. And as I say newspapers aren't driving the narrative these days. If people really wanted a left viewpoint ( and my left would be very different to someone elses left) they would be investing heavily in podcasts etc.

madeleine45 Thu 24-Jul-25 15:00:40

I suppose that anyone stupid enough to fall for the rubbish that Farage says would deserve to vote for him. Farage knows that he can talk endless rubbish and say anything he likes because he is not going to get in so whatever he says he will not have to actually DO what he "promises" Hopefully no one will vote for this moron and those that do are obviously as pathetic as he is!!
In these days of easily found information, I think that all the promises all politicians make should be saved and then when the actually dont do half the things that they promised you can play their promises on screen and ask why they havent done what they said they would!!!

MaizieD Thu 24-Jul-25 13:56:06

Mamie

.....inaccurate (I need a new stylus)
I honestly don't care whether journalists are from the left or the right, if their writing has evidence and justification for their opinions attached.

Ah, but Galaxy seems to be implying that people who would like to see more journalists from the left (i.e the opposite of the journalists Jane43 named) are somehow wrong; they're just looking for an echo chamber.

Which, IMO demeans any desire to see opposing viewpoints more widely disseminated.

Galaxy Thu 24-Jul-25 10:36:50

I would certainly say that traditional media isn't influencing people's views in the way it was. That time has gone.

Mamie Thu 24-Jul-25 10:36:18

Are people suggesting the list of actions and planned actions in Kevin Maguire's list is innacurate?
If so, it would be helpful to know which ones.

MaizieD Thu 24-Jul-25 09:59:53

Galaxy

You mean we need more journalists that you agree with.

There is something that is disturbing me about this remark, but I can't quite put my finger on it.

It's something vague about 'how do people form their opinions if it isn't from what is disseminated by journalists in the media?'

Where are people supposed to get their opinions or beliefs from? Bearing in mind that few people dig any deeper than the media.

LizzieDrip Thu 24-Jul-25 09:52:34

That was also my take on it WW.

Keven Maguire is the only journalist, as far as I can see, who is outspoken enough to be openly left, whilst the media is absolutely flooded with right wing perspectives.

It’s an echo chamber!

A few more alternative / differing journalistic voices would be appreciated.

Even The Guardian is soooo careful to present balance that it often sits on the fence.

Let’s have more Kevin Maguires, who nail their colours to the left wing mast!
