What a terrible problem that is compared to all the other problems the world is facing…forget global warming, wars etc etc. Let’s just focus on asylum seekers and blame them for everything bad that’s happening. I’m not saying there isn’t a problem. But it isn’t the main problem the country faces and is just being used to divert attention from other things.

I’ve never thought of you as someone that looks on things from a racist perspective; your views are always well balanced and well thought through. I have said I recognise that there is a problem. What I’m trying to say is that this is being turned into the main political issue facing the country and it is being fuelled by right wing organisations because they have their own agenda. And they do use racism to stir up support. I do not want our police facing a summer of violence; they have enough on their plate as it is.

You are absolutely right. I think British people have been more than generous to people settling here from other countries for decades. At some point though people come to realise that enough is enough.

We hear that other countries (eg Australia, America, Germany and Greece) have really cracked down on illegal immigrants yet Our country is still admitting them in record numbers. We cannot house them and we cannot afford them.

It is not racist to admit this and most people have no problem with people coming here legally to work. Using words like “racists, nasty posts, mean spirited, Islamophobia, hate speak” etc are just excuses to try to get threads shut down.

I would like to think the mods are sensible enough to realise this especially as families all over the country and politicians from all parties are admitting now that we have a huge problem in this country.

Well said both GG13 and Primrose. I've come to the conclusion that the first thing quite a few posters on GN do every day is wake up and put on a set of blinkers before getting out of bed. There is a problem to be dealt with, not to continuously make excuse after excuse for.

Absolutely agree! It’s got nothing to do with the colour of skin, or religion, I take people as I find them.
My dad’s carers were mainly Asian, one had come over recently From France. All were absolutely amazing, & very caring. Every one of them came to his church & cremation. I don’t have a problem- what do have a problem with is the infrastructure not coping, we are only a very small country.

John Mappin owns The Camelot Castle Hotel in Tintagel Cornwall . I believe it's a 4* . A majority of rooms have 4 poster beds superb bathrooms and top quality furnishings . Most rooms have sea views . I know I have been twice. It's beautiful. 2 years ago Mr Mappin received a letter offering him 1 million pounds for a year to house the immigrants / asylum seekers . He was told to sack his staff as the government would provide cooks and cleaners . He refused because he loves his hotel and his village and his staff are like family .He refused because it would have destroyed Tintagel . Again this year he received another letter once again offering another 1 million for 1 year to hand the hotel over . He has refused . Not all the hotels are 2* . He was interviewed on GB news about this couple of months ago and it was an eye opener . Even he said how could they want to sleep these men in four poster beds ?

Whoever he is and whoever he supports, he did the right thing in not accepting the Government's bribe, for his village and for ths people who work for him.

Why on earth would asylum seekers want to go to Tintagel anyway? Would it be a case of 'out of sight, out of mind' on the part of the Government? Beautiful, but they would feel isolated.

I don’t trust what he says to be honest. Sounds a nasty piece of work with the people he supports. Believes that the navy should be patrolling the channel. Bought the house initially as his own personal castle before turning it into a hotel.

I hope you will be opening up your house to these migrants Maybee70. Lead by example. You could live in your shed or garage if you have one and allow these poor migrants full access to your own home. Surely, that’s the Christian way forward.

John Mappin is the co-founder of TurningPoint UK, which is a spin-off from the American TurningPoint and ardently pro-Trump. QAnon has posted all sorts of antisemitic tropes and is behind many of the conspiracy theories about Jews wanting to rule the world. It's also behind the fiction that Trump is saving America from paedophiles. John Mappin flew the QAnon flag on his castle/hotel.

What is relevant here is that Mappin does not seem to have received an offer from the Home Office to house asylum seekers. What he actually said was that he had heard that other hoteliers had been offered large sums of money.

Then this was taken further by the media which claimed that Mappin had been offered money himself. This was then spread by people who don't have all the facts and don't know the full story.

It just goes to show how myths and lies can spread so easily online.

I suppose one can be concerned about large numbers of young men hanging about and still have the wit to think?

The hotel in Diss was being quietly used by families seeking asylum, children were happy at school, all was well. Then it seems the demographic was about to be changed.

By the by Maremia, a deflection. But yes a turn of phrase. However this is a predominantly Christian country or was until recent years. Sorry if that offends you.

This reminds me of interviews on TV where a reporter talked to people who were holding “Refugees Welcome” placards. They were asked if they would or had taken in a refugee.

The excuses were “I would but I don’t have a spare room”. “My grandchildren come for sleepovers and use the spare room”. “my spare room is full of packing cases” etc. not a single person interviewed would or had taken in a refugee. 🤣

No Primrose but they should. Lead by example. Put the packing cases in the garage. Put the grandkids in tents in the garden. Convert the loft for a few more migrant beds. Only then should they be spouting off about refugees being welcome. Put their money where their mouths are for once.
