It is very difficult to understand what is really happening and what are lies being perpetrated by Israel or Hamas. Add to this reporting restrictions and it is surprising we know as much as we do.

Iam64 Mon 28-Jul-25 10:11:16

The reality imo is, anti semitism is integral to discussions about Israel - Gaza

Smileless2012 Mon 28-Jul-25 10:07:38

Trying to shut it down? shut what down Oreo? A thread to discuss antisemitism isn't shutting down a discussion, it's opening one unless you prefer it be constantly brought up here, to try and shut down any criticism of Israels behaviour in Gaza and the West Bank.

I am reminded of

“don’t Mention The War”. Fawlty Towers Basil

Oreo Mon 28-Jul-25 10:04:47

I completely disagree.

The trouble is whitewavemark2 that race hatred by many on those marches is muddled in.You cannot separate the two subjects, the Gaza war and antisemitism are inextricably linked.

No

What you mean is that the racists can’t separate the two subjects.

But we can and should.

You see it all the time in the arguments which are unrelated but gets muddled into the subject under discussion.

We can make a much better fist of things if we recognise this and treat them as separate subjects.

Whitewavemark2 Mon 28-Jul-25 09:59:17

If a thread is started on race hatred, I think that it would be relatively short lived as I think that there will be a break out of total agreement

I envy him this task, not in the teeeeniest bit.

Meanwhile, Starmer has the lovely task today in Scotland of 'persuading' Trump to help with the situation in Gaza.

Starmer is the PM, it’s his job.

Certainly not trying to shut the fight against anti-semitism down.

And we all know that it has risen since the start of the war as has Islamaphobia.

But the debate over initially Hamas and then Israeli government actions has nothing to do with racial hatred, and everything to do with the way the war is being conducted.

To muddle in race hatred is actually to do exactly what the racists are doing.

It is wrong.

But they are important subjects and need a thread of their own.

Maremia Mon 28-Jul-25 09:44:47

Not sure what you are implying there Oreo?

Posters now are very careful in their wording of posts as they know that anything that crosses a line will be deleted.

Maureen Lipman gave an interview shortly after Gaza declared war on Israel, October 2023, Jewish Graveyards had guards to
protect graves in UK

Maremia Mon 28-Jul-25 09:40:19

Anti-semitism has existed for thousands of years. It has haunted and hounded the Jewish people for so long. It has surged recently because of the events in Gaza.
Happily, there has never been any anti-semitism on any of the current Gaza threads. I can't speak for the ones before I joined.
If there had been, those posts would have been reported and removed
Yes, it would deserve a thread of its own where, as on here, we could discuss aims and strategies that could try to help the situation.
Go for it AnnieB, you would find support.

nanna8 Mon 28-Jul-25 09:38:31

Diversionary? No. It is a real problem and it is connected with the war because people use the war as an excuse to attack. What is happening in Gaza is shocking, but it should not be used to further people’s hatred of others who have nothing to do with the warring countries. Imagine if people started attack Moslems and people flying the Palestinian flag. They would be accused of hate crimes and in the good old tolerant UK probably face a jail term. Nothing happens to those attacking Jewish people though.

Antisemitism cannot be separated from Israel Gaza War, to do so is denial .

Why are Russians not being shot in American, attacked in many countries ?

Very good question!

I'd like to have seen that WWM and yes, antisemitism should be discussed on another thread.

Trying to shut it down?

Oreo Mon 28-Jul-25 09:36:42

Anniebach

To all on this thread, your thoughts on my posts should not be
a reason to ignore my request

“Please don’t deny Antisemitism has been in the world for centuries and not only since the Israeli/Gaza war October 2023

Of course it has.
The pro Palestinian marches here started right after the October attacks.
It would be disingenuous at best to think that very large numbers of those marching in all the time since, weren’t antisemitic.

Whitewavemark2 Mon 28-Jul-25 09:17:02

Raising antisemitism is a diversionary tactic. We can respond or not. It makes no difference.

It really should be on another thread, because it would not then get muddled into the war Israel is fighting with its neighbours.

Whitewavemark2 Mon 28-Jul-25 09:14:51

Netanyahu was made mincemeat if by a CNN reporter, and the non- delivery of aid.

She challenged him and he had no answer.

Smileless2012 Mon 28-Jul-25 09:12:59

I haven't seen any posts of denial either AGA confused.

It really is unfair IMO of you to keep bringing antisemitism into the discussions we're having on GN Annie. The criticism of what's happening in Gaza and on the West Bank that I've seen here and have made myself, have nothing to do with antisemitism.

nanna8 Mon 28-Jul-25 09:09:27

We have an area here where many Jewish people live and attend Jewish schools. They now have to employ security guards to protect the pupils. This started well before the Israeli conflict but attacks have escalated recently - I doubt whether these thugs really care about the dreadful situation in Gaza, they are just anti Semitic thugs. Full stop.
