So what do GNs think of Starmer’s decision to recognise Palestine as a state?

Exactly that.
Although it’s still only, the UK may recognise Palestine as a state unless certain conditions are fulfilled
What will that mean for the UK and for those supporters of either group living here?

Do you usually quote from people's posts, adding things they haven't said, Anniebach?

Anniebach Fri 01-Aug-25 17:58:53

Did you not agree “without conditions” ?

Steelygran Fri 01-Aug-25 17:55:45

I definitely did not say this Anniebach:

"They shouldn’t free the hostages ,Hamas should continue to use their firearms and should remain as Government."

I don't understand this part of your post, Anniebach.

I can't find evidence in the thread that anyone has said the following:

"They shouldn’t free the hostages ,Hamas should continue to use their firearms and should remain as Government."

Where are you quoting it from

“It should come without conditions “ in you reply

agggh!!!
I give up getting it exactly right. Send me to pedants corner and later I'll come back to carry on with the general discussion.

Wyllow3 Fri 01-Aug-25 17:32:42

I was very pleased when I heard this announced. It certainly is long overdue.

It's long overdue to recognise Palestine as a state. The people of Palestine are human beings who deserve a homeland, their own government and the right to determine their own future. It should come without conditions.

I completely agree.

David49 Fri 01-Aug-25 15:33:03

“Israel is more than capable of riding itself of Hamas - as I said they dealt with Hezbollah a much, much bigger organisation.”

That’s rubbish
Hezbollah had not got several million civilians as human shields in a very small area. Nobody mourned Hezbollah being decimated in Lebanon because few civilians were involved.

Oreo Fri 01-Aug-25 14:27:58

But maybe for different reasons?🤔😃

Iam64 Fri 01-Aug-25 14:25:44

We agree on that then Annie 🌞

Am not so sure as he hasn’t read the room on any other matters so far.
I really do think he was worried there would be a rebellion against him.
We are where we are tho, and it hasn’t happened as yet.

I am sure he read the room

It’s possible to see the complexity here. I don’t believe Starmer was somehow bullied by his party. It’s more likely he’s read the room in the country he represents. I would prefer to see all hostages returned and a magic solution where the exhausted, traumatised Palestinian people kicked out Hamas and democratically elected a decent government. Alongside that, the Israelis would kick out Netanyahu, his awful right wingers and destroy then ban illegal settlements

I agree with you.

I agree with Starmer. Yes, recognising Palestine as a state is symbolic but that symbolism recognises the right of Palestinians not just to exist, but to live.

Exactly that.

Whitewavemark2 Fri 01-Aug-25 09:03:12

GrannyGravy13

Palestine should only be recognised as a state when the elected government, which is Hamas hands over the hostages, be they alive or the bodies of the dead.

Whitewavemark2 Hamas are not a tin pot terrorist organisation the head honchos are multi millionaires living in safe Arab countries, no doubt already plotting their next move.

They are in the scheme of things. They are only in the position they are because of Israel.

Israel is more than capable of riding itself of Hamas - as I said they dealt with Hezbollah a much, much bigger organisation.

Anniebach Fri 01-Aug-25 08:38:11

I have given much thought, listened to opinions of some, heard

Starmer needs the Muslim vote.
Several in the cabinet have a large Muslim note
Starmer fears Corbyn taking many votes from Labour .

For me , Hamas are the winners, they are the official government, they are believed. If there is a general election
in Gaza after Palestine is recognised as a state Hamas will win,
the Palestinians see them as victors

Smileless2012 Fri 01-Aug-25 08:34:46

Disgusted. A weak leader, the worst in our history, being led by the nose such as Macron and his own extreme Left Hamas supporting backbenchers, such as the Islamists elected on that ticket, God knows how it was allowed to happen. If this happens he has already been informed by lawyers that he will be breaking international law. CCJ coming after him, of course not, it is tantamount to recognising a terrorist organisation as a Gov. Because believe me they will not let go.
I stand with Israel.
