And the stock markets have responded by falling.

He's like the greedy kid with the keys to the World Sweetie Shop - uncontrollable. How on earth he got elected.........

keepingquiet Fri 01-Aug-25 09:18:38

He'll chicken out- he always does...

Chocolatelovinggran Fri 01-Aug-25 12:19:10

He's busy with sleight of hand to distract all those asking
" Show us the Epstein files"

His tariffs might be in trouble if a Federal court rules against him.

Not that it matters. I can't think of a single law or norms he has adhered to yet.

And now he is spending $200 million of his own money to build a ballroom in the White House. wonder how much rent he is going to charge us? confused

ayse Fri 01-Aug-25 17:23:17

He will continue to take plenty of no notice to anyone. He is a dictator

Casdon Fri 01-Aug-25 18:53:18

It’s worrying though, because it’s destabilising for the world, as well as pushing up prices. I feel for ordinary American people too because the policy is pushing up prices, and his measures don’t seem to be benefitting them.

Naturally his tariffs have destabilised the market, and the economic indicators in the USA are not looking good, a fall in employment being one.

So bad in fact that Trump has sacked the person responsible for producing economic USA data 😄😄😄.

Shall we stick to the facts, he isn’t a dictator, he was voted in as President in a democratic country.
He may wish to be one but that’s another matter.

Oreo Sat 02-Aug-25 09:44:45

Switzerland are now feeling the pinch, as the new tariff there will be 39%.
We have got off very lightly here fortunately, at 10%.

Although definitions of 'dictator' tend to say that a dictator is unelected that seems to me to be inaccurate.

Encyclopedia Britannica says this:

dictatorship, form of government in which one person or a small group possesses absolute power without effective constitutional limitations. The term dictatorship comes from the Latin title dictator, which in the Roman Republic designated a temporary magistrate who was granted extraordinary powers in order to deal with state crises. Modern dictators, however, resemble ancient tyrants rather than ancient dictators. Ancient philosophers’ descriptions of the tyrannies of Greece and Sicily go far toward characterizing modern dictatorships. Dictators usually resort to force or fraud to gain despotic political power, which they maintain through the use of intimidation, terror, and the suppression of basic civil liberties. They may also employ techniques of mass propaganda in order to sustain their public support.

No mention of exactly how the power was gained in the first place, just that it is absolute power without effective constitutional limitations. This looks very like Trump's hold on the US at the moment.

Putin is regularly re-elected. Does that make him not a dictator?

Oreo Sat 02-Aug-25 11:16:01

On Putin, a lot of Russians think he’s the best thing since sliced bread and do vote for him time after time, tho with little opposition there and probably much vote rigging and corruption I think we can safely say that yes he’s a dictator.
That isn’t the case with Trump, he also has a big fan base, the opposition wasn’t popular, Kamala Harris, but even so he only just managed to come out on top.The US voting system is fair and above board.
Therefore he isn’t a dictator any more than POTUS’s in the past were. He didn’t win the election before this one.
We may not like him or his choices but that doesn’t make him a dictator.
Any POTUS has a lot of power.

Whitewavemark2 Sat 02-Aug-25 11:25:10

Now Trump is threatening to sack the Fed. Governor unless he lowers interest rates.

I doubt there are many brave enough to say they oppose Putin though, who wants to fall to their death out of a window, be poisoned, or be sent to Siberia?

Oreo Sat 02-Aug-25 12:20:13

True enough Casdon but there are many there who idolise him, especially for all the macho stuff and man of the people act. There’s even a calendar to buy with Putin riding a horse with his chest bare and other outdoorsy stuff.

Casdon Sat 02-Aug-25 13:17:14

Oh good grief. I wouldn’t even buy a calendar of David Beckham with his kit off, never mind somebody ugly. The only thing I would say, is that one of Donald Trump in similar poses would be even more grotesque.

madeleine45 Sat 02-Aug-25 13:50:10

I hadnt realized of course his name is D Trump. so that should really read Dictator Donald duck Trump. Obviously I had forgotten that. What a moronic idiot he is, and for the idiots who voted him in, giving him the chance to behave like a 2 year old who wont play with you unless he is boss , or will take his ball away if he isnt the centre of attention. Well let him carry on as he is doing and with a bit of luck we shall end up bonded together by our dislike and distain of this idiot.

I have lived under dictators, He is worse than them. Under a dictator if he decides that women must walk on the right on monday and left on tuesday, you consider if you can live with this and make your mind up whether to live there or not. Now this lunatic with power ,that he uses to his own benefit, not his countries is supposedly in charge!!! He changes his mind with the breeze. No one has any idea what the fool will do tomorrow. Who wants to be told what to do by a lying, selfcentred moron, who is racist, treats women appallingly , and cares not a jot for anyone other than himself. He does not do what is best for his country but what suits him personally. Thank god I dont have to live under such lunacy. The thought that he might have his hand on the button, is quite chilling. Of course he actually thinks he has the right to annexe sovereign lands such as Greenland, without so much as a by your leave. I was actually in Greenland when he announced this and I can tell you that the greenlanders were both furious and determined that he should not get his way. Wonder what relation to Hitler he is? Obviously there must be some americans who have a brain, but we dont seem to learn about them , just the latest that the lunatic is getting away with.

I feel sorry for Starmer and the King and all who have to face this disgraceful pathetic human being, they certainly are earning their money to have to face him, without actually vomiting on the spot.!! Well let him carry on as he is doing and with a bit of luck , there will be not one country or person with integrity who will support him. In the meantime Canada is doing well for tourists as those who cannot trust or stomach USA are much preferring to go there where they are treated with respect and you can visit without feeling you have no idea what the fool will do tomorrow!!

I think you may be right😂
I will have to look into a calendar for Trump, see if one exists, just out of curiosity.
I know the Putin one does, or certainly did a few years ago.

Tariffs imposed against the EU generated tight smiles from Ursula vd Leyen and her team looking at photographs taken afterwards. They had until 1st August to negotiate a deal. Usually the EU drive the hard bargain. Not this time. Reports say they’ve had some of their own medicine back. They approached Japan for tips how best to go about things too.

You understand this deal is likely to increase prices in the UK, I’m sure, there is nothing for us to be gleeful about - quite the opposite, given we are dependent on goods from Europe.

Jeannied Sun 03-Aug-25 13:40:05

Dictator? Don't make me laugh. The vile Marxist government we have in the UK are dictators.

Jeannied Sun 03-Aug-25 13:41:13

Jeannied Sun 03-Aug-25 13:42:34

You are so ill informed

Casdon Sun 03-Aug-25 14:01:32

Somebody is ill informed Jeannied. The EU is the UK's largest trading partner, accounting for over 50% of UK foreign trade.
