J D Vance in The Cotswolds

J D Vance is on holiday in The Cotswolds with his family.

Not just his family - there is a cavalcade of 18 cars with very high security which involves police escorts, road closures, causing residents and other visitors to become rather disgruntled. The village of Dean near Chipping Norton has been put into lockdown, apparently. Villagers are not happy to say the least!

He had already been to inspect Hampton Court Palace (no, it's not for sale, sorry).

Thank goodness we visited The Cotswolds last week not this one 😀

Having just spoken to my friend who is a childless cat lady at the age of 90, Vance may well have some insights which could be expressed more diplomatically.

Why 18 cars? They will be monster gas guzzlers too, polluting the beautiful Cotswolds.

They’ll be full of men in black talking up their jacket sleeves.

And - this is just the Vice-President. Not even the actual POTUS.

How many cars does Trump need when he goes to buy up chunks of Scotland?

The delightful Pete Hegseth reposted a video on X of pastors discussing whether women should have the vote. No was the consensus.

Hegseth reposted the nearly seven-minute report with the caption: “All of Christ for All of Life.”

The Handmaids Tale draws ever nearer in the US ...

Chocolatelovinggran Wed 13-Aug-25 11:51:21

Indeed, mrsmeldrew,: another person whose " insights" mostly would be better not expressed at all.

Trump and Vance have the nerve to say the UK doesn't allow free speech.

whywhywhy Wed 13-Aug-25 11:59:53

How dare they come over here on a holiday and lockdown our villages.
I would be out there with a placard and tell them to buggar off back home! Who do they think they are?

Now, people living within the security cordon around Vance's rental Cotswold manor house, have claimed the stringent measures to protect the American politician saw cops ordering them to hand over the account names of their social media profiles.

Thames Valley Police insisted villagers living in the security buffer in Dean were only spoken to by officers to ensure they could pass through the blockade unhindered. The force vehemently denies people were asked about their social media accounts.

However, speaking to the Observer, one dog walker from hamlet said: 'We have had the police knocking on every door. They wanted the names of everybody living there and details of their social media. I know several people refused.

'We asked them if they were protecting us, or Vance. At least they were honest and said it is for him and that it will all be passed on to the American security people.'

There was cake and music. The weather was perfect. At first glance, it could have been a joyful community gathering in a sun-dappled Cotswolds village park, but the placards gave the game away.

These pulled no punches, criticising the policies and stances championed by the US vice-president, JD Vance, who is enjoying a country break down the road.

About 100 people, mostly women, turned up for the “not welcome” party organised by the Stop Trump Coalition on the park opposite the Co-op in Charlbury, north-west Oxfordshire.
Natasha Phillips, who had travelled 70 miles from Bath to attend the event billed as a “Dance against Vance”, bore a placard saying: “JD Vance – the guy who bullied a war hero from the comfort of his couch.”

I feel some sympathy for Mrs Vance and children. This can’t be anyone’s idea of a restful family holiday? Why on earth??

Boz Wed 13-Aug-25 13:10:20

Vance will be the next PotUS; it will pay to keep him sweet.

The same thing happened at the weekend when he was a guest of David Lammy’s at Chevening House. They went to a local pub in Chipstead for a meal on Saturday! I was having lunch at a nearby cafe when a few of Vance’s drivers came in.

JD Vance and family are welcome to visit Britain, but not with a cavalcade of 19 cars, and necessitating Hampton Court being closed to the public for their private tour. They should have visited after hours and paid for the privilege.

The way The Chancellor of the Exchequer is talking, I don’t think that the USA has the political will or ability to bail out the UK’s economy. It seems increasingly likely that the IMF will be involved quite soon in a bailout. We are mistaken if we think the USA is a friend.

dalrymple23 Wed 13-Aug-25 15:14:38

Why on earth was his Cotswold holiday publicised? If it had been kept low key, no-one would have known anything about it. I would not have recognised him nor any of his family if he had been wandering down the aisles at Tesco! Ridiculous fiasco - or just a publicity stunt?

Allira Wed 13-Aug-25 15:20:19

Why on earth was his Cotswold holiday publicised?
Why does he have so much to say in top-level meetings?

Because he likes to be in the limelight.
Because Trump is 79?
Because he is actually running the show?

USA are not current friend of ours, have no intention to bail us out.

Thank you Chocolatelovinggran, I was looking for that quote.

I wonder if Daylesford Organic gave the Vances a complimentary hamper to take to their holiday home?

The prices are way beyond the budget of most of us.

"To he who hath, to him shall be given"?

They probably got 2 hampers from Daylesford, they are very close to Diddly Squat and Clarksons place who had to change filming schedule because of the disruption.

If they had helicoptered in discretely nobody would have known they were there and would probably have enjoyed the holiday more

No, the film crews were there, discreet is not Vance's middle name!

On some threads I have a bet with myself as to how soon Hitler will be mentioned but tbh I didn’t see that coming on this particular thread.🤔

When you have the rise of the ult-right comments are bound to be made. If you saw the rise of Communism you would expect the odd "Stalin" comment.

The Vance family have landed in Scotland, staying on the Carnell Estate.

I watched the cavalcade on twitter.

I’ve never seen anything so ridiculous!

I would have politely refused too and told them to go and get a warrant……..only then would I comply!

Yes and the police told the residents that all their details will all be passed on to the American security people.
