Setting a precedent?

The High Court has awarded Epping Forest District Council a temporary injunction to remove asylum seekers from a local hotel.
Setting a precedent?

There is not enough barracks type accommodation, which is why the last government introduced the use of hotels. More accommodation is being developed of that type since the election, and the number of migrants in hotels has decreased in the last year. Would that the government had a magic wand.

My point is that Badenoch absolutely knows all this, so she is making herself look an idiot when there was no need for her to say anything publicly, if she wanted to lobby Tory led councils she could have done so without the publicity.

Yes growstuff I know they are increasing the capacity at Wethersfield.

I am on the bench when it comes to how much freedom these young men should have outside of the complex.

She may look like an idiot in the eyes of the politically engaged.

To the disenfranchised she is saying what they want to hear.

That could be true, but they're still not luxurious.
I'm beginning to wonder if you're the Hotel Inspector, growstuff!

Certainly the one we were going to stay in a couple of years ago, whilst not The Ritz, was a very nice hotel with all the amenities one could wish for, carefully chosen to accommodate a group of us, then cancelled a few days before our gathering.

I have just heard on the news that the number of migrants living in hotels has actually increased by 8% from when Labour came to power last year
They should never have scrapped the Rwanda scheme

Hordes, and I mean hordes, of single fighting age young men, dispersed amongst the population in HMO's?

No thanks.

They have already shown what little - if any - regard they have for women by abandoning their own kind to poverty, persecution and abuse,

Utter , utter nonsense.

How dare you refer to other human beings like this?

Hordes.

" their own kind"

Disgusting.

Visgir1 Thu 21-Aug-25 10:13:27

Meanwhile.. Various Housing is being bought by companies such as "Clearspring Ready Homes" these are bought as HMO's which is housing these Migrants causing overload on Council services . In some cases the Council have been unaware it's happing as reported in The Times at the weekend.
So, not using as many Hotels. Same story diffent avenue.
A local councillor recently told me around over 50 houses have been purchased in our local city. One of the Local MP's was unaware it was even happening (She a Labour MP) This directive apprently comes direct from the Home Office so by - passes the council.
Our local City has said it's saturated and can't take anymore, so these Companies are now looking at smaller areas to distribute these illegal people.
This is going to cause, nationwide problems. Only a week or so ago my Local Town got 75 men stopped from going into newly refurbished flats in the middle of our Town.
Protests and people power with a MP who's not unknown to controversy joined in the protest, with her help it got it stopped....for now. I don't think it will go away.

The latest Home Office figures show the number of asylum seekers being housed in hotels has risen 8% over the last year, to 32,059 at the end of June. However, that's a 43% drop compared to September 2023, when numbers peaked at 56,042, and is also a slight decrease on the total at the end of March, which was 32,345.12

Casdon Thu 21-Aug-25 10:21:24

Bear in mind that the Bibby Stockholm was also decommissioned.

Laboutine Thu 21-Aug-25 10:39:21

Meanwhile Kemi Badenoch is publicly urging Tory led councils to mount legal challenges over migrants being housed in hotels. She must think the public have the memory of gnats, she really does not read the room.

Meanwhile both Wirral, and Tamworth councils, are considering legal challenges to close hotels housing asylum seekers. Both are Labour controlled councils. "Cllr Paula Basnett, the leader of Wirral council whose boundaries include the Wallasey constituency of the immigration minister Angela Eagle, said the council is actively considering “all options” to close a local hotel. We are actively considering all options available to us to ensure that any use of hotels or other premises in Wirral is lawful and does not ride roughshod over planning regulations or the wishes of our communities."

Reading the room is indeed important.

One significant reasons "The Bibby Stockholm"was decommissioned was local Trades refused to stock the ship with any services. Then picking up Legioners Disease,(No cleaning services) is the reason it was stopped. I got this info from one of the team involved trying to sort it out.

I’ve a good idea! Why don’t the do gooders on here do the government a favour & take one, or two of these irregular people 👍🏻 I soon bet like the demonstrators on the ‘side’of the irregular people that were interviewed last week have no room!

Why didn't those protestors demonstrate outside their local town hall? They would have made their point without intimidating the people inside the hotel..... Oh, wait...

Far better to intimidate people in the hotel than those outside Epping Council offices which are situated in a residential street, with a primary school in that road, and the library. The Bell Hotel is on the outskirts of town on a green area called Bell Common with very few pedestrians walking along outside it, so no one would be disturbed or even scared.

Growstuff, in her Alex Polizzi rôle, is actually right, that the Bell Hotel is a dump. DSiL did some work there. It's owned by a man who has many hotels, of which I think 10 or so house migrants. I don't know about any other hotels though.

Iam64 Thu 21-Aug-25 13:34:47

Do gooders - what does that mean?

Mt61 Thu 21-Aug-25 13:56:22

People who want to do good by these people. So why not put them up?

Mt61 Thu 21-Aug-25 14:03:48

Some people adopted a Ukrainian family, why not for these people. I think it’s a terrific idea.

That’s a plan Mt61, if you don’t mind migrants living right next door to you. It would be like a country wide version of the Miners Strike in the 1980s, . Not your best idea ever.

Primrose53 Thu 21-Aug-25 14:29:21

I noticed this is headline news on just about every newspaper this morning when I did my weekly shop.

Labour are scrambling around looking for places to put the illegal immigrants being turfed out of hotels. Nothing will be good enough though. 😉

Other countries must be laughing their heads off at our daft Govt.

It may well be but not all the hotels are dumps, including the one we were to stay at. The management could have had the decency to let the organisers know that the booking had been cancelled because the Government had commissioned it instead of them finding out when they phoned to finalise details! Presumably the Government paid more, money talks.

Mt61 Thu 21-Aug-25 14:49:48

Oh so you do mind them? Casdon

theworriedwell Thu 21-Aug-25 15:14:50

The hotel in my town that they are using is a dump. I'm amazed it hasn't been knocked down long ago.

Allira Thu 21-Aug-25 15:18:49

You can't blame the hotel owners, some of them must have been desperate after Covid.
