Hopefully once the schools ( in England) are back and the dark nights arrive, there will be less of this embarassing stupidity.

I've never waved a flag or displayed a flag in my life. My Dad had a little car sticker with the saltire on it and pin badge.

People will fly whatever flag they want to. I find it vaguely terrifying that people are now saying people shouldn't do things because of the thoughts that they think are in their heads.

That's a good pointmaybee unfortunately the symbolism of the flag of St George has been highjacked by thugs and racists who want to divide us, if people want to fly a flag perhaps it should be the Union Jack which is about the unity of the people who make up our country and is inclusive not devisive! But please get it the right way up.

Strangely enough I was listening to some podcasts about the lead up to 1066 and it dawned on me that we have just got used to flags being flown for sporting events or as symbols of patriotism. But prior to that they were used in battle and were very symbolic. So, imo there is something frighteningly war like about the flag flyers.

I suppose I might be tempted to fly a flag, if somebody came up with a design which clearly represented a loathing of Farage and his ilk. The trouble is that we end up with a "war of the flags", which seems a bit childish.

Fly your flag! I am a Brit living in the USA, and I am now an American citizen. We proudly fly the Stars and Stripes 24/7. If I still lived in England I would fly the Union Jack and, or, the St. George flag. Why not? What’s the problem here?

Laboutine I'll address a couple of issues.

Firstly, I do find some of the British flags racist - for the very simple reason that some of them are. I've provided the proof and I'm not going to waste my time providing it again.

Secondly, I might have to live with racist flags being flown, but I don't have to do so quietly (no matter the size of my underwear).

Thirdly, I know who I am, but I don't hold any exalted position - and I have never claimed that I do. Nevertheless, you are wrong. There are laws about where flags can be flown, so it's not true that they can be flown wherever people want.

It IS a racist and/or political act, if it really is to show frustration with immigration. I wish people would make their minds up.
By the way, I don't feel intimidated or threatened by British flags flown in the correct way in the right places

If you personally find any of the British flags racist, that's a you problem growstuff and it's not for me, or anyone else, to give you an explanation as to why we support them being flown or accommodate you in dealing with that; you're just going to have to put your big girl pants on and learn to live with it. I'm not sure who you think you are, or what exalted position you think you hold, but you really don't get a say in where, when or how our ensign is flown; it's flown when a citizen wants it, where that citizen wants it, in any manner they want to raise it and for any reason they want to fly it. You'd better gird your loins my dear because I think you'll be seeing many more flags flying, for a whole myriad of reasons, in the coming months and there's nothing you can do to stop them. Perhaps just give them a hard stare!

no one stopping anyone from flying their home flag on their own property, No one has ever bothered much before, unless it was to do with either football or rugby. the flying of these flags now are about something else entirely, Which is a shame, because if everyone was as proud of their country as they say they are, why not before now? and why hang them from the road side. It is a point they are trying to bring across. and is trying to subjugate (if thats the right word?) certain people, rightly or wrongly. and a lot of these people aren't proud of the country, they just want to make trouble.

I don’t like flags of any description no matter what or who they represent . Nobody here in my local community is flying a flag of any kind.
To me, all flags flaunt nationalism so, no, I would never fly one or wave one!

Madame F. Not about so many years on, it's the effect it has daily consequences. And just look at the mess in YUK that it has caused. I live a very happy life here in France. I don't always have the right opinions, I'm too liberal and educated for that. And this isn't political, it's about the status quo. I'm heartbroken for my grandchildren, does that make me a ridiculous grandmother? Just a caring one. Thankfully they all hold more philanthropic views than you. If i wish to be political then that is my democratic right.

They certainly didn't look terrified by "people brandishing flags like weapons" (a little over the top don't your think when the majority were women quietly protesting as they were worried about the safety of their daughters) - quite the contrary these particular migrants seem to be loving the attention

Just saying, and because people like accuracy, those windows weren't the Bell Hotel, Epping. The Bell Hotel is older and more traditionally built, the windows are small, you can't get close to see because there is a veranda type entrance across the front. I think the window hotel photos are in London.

Only flag I would fly is the European flag. I am European first, english/Welsh second. Brexit broke my heart. I moved here as part of the European community and Brexit has changed my life, I am disenfranchised. I am so angry with all of you who blinkered voted Leave. Thank you also for making my children and grandchildren s lives so much more difficult. Thank goodness I had the sense to move (at that time not emmigrate) to France.

Some of us are no less well educated than you, perhaps even better educated, and voted Leave after careful consideration. We’re not blinkered because we don’t share the same opinions as you (obviously the only correct ones).

If you’re still this angry after so many years I’d suggest you concentrate less on politics. To be heartbroken is ridiculous. Fly your European flag in France, live a happy life, and others will fly their flag of choice too.

I saw that as well. I have watched quite a few of those "break into and/or demonstrate outside" these hotels videos by now and I have yet to see any of them looking scared.

Sullen yes....entitled yes....one even downright saying he thinks they should be "in charge" in our country!!!!!! and he can just be grateful that I wasnt nearby at the time he said that.......quite an amount of obvious telling lies. But no - fear is something I havent seen on any of their faces.

I have just driven past the statue of Winston Churchill in his old constituency and it is adorned with Union flags. It made me feel quite emotional.

We have several celebrations, and flags often appear at these times:
The lionesses win
VE day
VJ day
and we are supporting the women's rugby ongoing
