Would you fly a flag for your country?

I was born in England but am of Irish heritage, I am proud of both England and Ireland.

My daughter lives on the outskirts of a village that has scores of union flags flying, it lifts my spirits as we drive in.

On a recent trip to Norway I loved seeing all the homes flying their flag and wondered why we don’t have same sense of patriotism.

I will fly a flag, I’m going to order a pole and we will fly the flag my husbands grandparents flew on their flagpole on VE Day.

I am not a racist, our grandchildren are mixed race, we have friends who are Congolese, Sri Lankan, Egyptian etc.

I am however British and very proud, we need to reclaim our flag and our pride.

Yes, I would.

Bought two Poundland bags with the union flag, 🇬🇧 quite sturdy, hope to use for a long time, actually felt proud carrying them.

Americans are very patriotic. I love seeing the Stars and Stripes above their doorways. The Union Jack is nothing to be ashamed of.

I would love to but worry about ramifications.

Gosh! Do your own thing, don’t worry about anybody else.

I have ordered a large Union Jack. Lots of people around here have had flagpoles and flags flying for many years.

Bridie22 Sun 24-Aug-25 19:56:37

No problem flying the flag.🇬🇧

Casdon Sun 24-Aug-25 20:04:57

Only on match days, out of my son’s window when he was younger.

What a positive start!

Whitewavemark2 Sun 24-Aug-25 20:18:35

Why?

LisaAN Sun 24-Aug-25 20:22:04

I would not. Not because I don‘t like my country, but I expect my neighbours here in Essex would not appreciate a German flag.

Whitewavemark2 Sun 24-Aug-25 20:26:33

I suppose a Cornish flag is ok, but I really don’t see the point. I don’t understand what I am saying and to whom.

Why has a second flag thread been started? What happened to the first one.

Why the obsession with flags all of a sudden.

Weird.

MayBee70 Sun 24-Aug-25 20:33:32

The first thread had to be closed down. There were some pretty nasty comments on it. It seems to me that the areas near me where people are flying flags are Reform voting areas. I copied a Facebook post to put on the other thread but couldn’t as it had gone. In it some young men who were painting England flags on buildings were hurling abuse at a young Muslim family that was passing by. A Facebook page of the next village to me had someone thanking people for flying flags. I wanted to respond but, for the first time I can remember, I was afraid to do so. I don’t know what I’ll do if anyone puts a flag up in my street. I don’t feel as if I belong in my country any more.

I simply don’t understand this sudden urge to hang a flag on a pole.

5 years ago or even last year I bet hardly anyone on this thread flew a flag or indeed even gave it a thought.

Are people being led by the nose - this is all very odd.

I don't need to fly any flags. I love my country for the most part, but not this new flag waving and flag graffiti.

Yes they are. It’s frightening. And nasty.

Why the obsession with flags all of a sudden

Race/ colour

GP fought in the war, parents mentally scared by abuse during evacuation. Just a little extra info.

D'you wanna be in my gang, my gang, my gang, D'you wanna be in my gang, Oh yeah!
D'you wanna be in my gang, my gang, my gang, D'you wanna be in my gang?
I'm the leader, I'm the leader, I'm the leader of the gang I am!
I'm the leader, I'm the leader, well there's no one like the man I am!
No reference to the man.

Think about all the English flags at royal events, at football matches and music concerts all over the country.

We stayed at a large hotel on Corfu a couple of years ago and it had flags from just about every country flying on the roof. It was good to see.

Whitewavemark2 Sun 24-Aug-25 20:47:04

Like MAGA? equivalent to a red baseball cap?

Very juvenile.
