Since I can’t see a thread about the Deputy PM and Housing Minister, Angela Rayner I am starting one. 😉

All the main newspapers are headlining this story but most have a paywall and this one doesn’t.

There’s no doubt she has come far from her humble beginnings but this demonstrates to me that she is very out of touch with people.

You are not going to vote because everyone is so nasty.

That is really going to help the country out.
One of the reasons Labour swept to victory was because so many people refrained from voting.

Like many posters here you seem unaware that the furore is not about property acquisition in general, but Rayner's betrayal of Labour's current housing policy towards second homes, whilst receiving a salary as Secretary of State for Housing.

Our newspapers are really untrustworthy, aren't they? Has anyone found an honest one?

That made me laugh eazybee, how can you possibly know what the outcome of the election would have been if everybody had voted. Labour may have won more seats, rather than less!

Jennerdys I read several but I find the Times and the Guardian together give me a reasonable overview and I also listen to BBC radio 4 news. I also find the Times daily podcast, The Story is generally good journalism for a more in depth coverage. Today's is about how other European countries are tackling issues with migration, not listened to it yet but will when I walk the dog.

Yes I follow similar news reading to foxie48. I also look at the daily mail on line but don’t read the increasing numbers of articles to pay for. Reading the DM is an eye opener, truthful reporting an analysis is a rare thing. It’s all to often a vicious distortion of reality. Sadly it’s clear it has influence and uses it.

Where did AR get the money for the Hove flat ?

ronib Wed 27-Aug-25 09:07:24

There are some very wealthy benefactors serving the Labour Party.

Where did AR get the money for the Hove flat ?

Presumably a mortgage like anyone else; not that it’s any of our business - unless you’re suggesting some sort of wrongdoing?

Mollygo Wed 27-Aug-25 10:03:57

Where did AR get the money isn’t altogether the issue, and not really our business unless it’s revealed as another helpful hand from someone wanting a favour.
If I came on GN spouting the mantra that second homes are depriving the homeless and depriving the next generation of the possibility of buying, whilst privately knowing that I’d bought a lovely seaside apartment, (far too expensive for any first time buyers of course, so it doesn’t count) so I could get away and relax I’d be jumped on.
A government minister especially one in charge of housing, doing the same thing is evidently to be allowed, and critics accused of hatred of AR?
Really?

The MPs code of conduct states explicitly that political donations may not be used for personal benefit

House of Commons Code of Conduct for Members (2023 edition, current)

Paragraph 12:

“Members must not misuse their expenses, allowances, facilities, or services provided by the public purse, or misuse payments received in respect of parliamentary duties, for personal or financial benefit.”

Category 4: Donations and other support for activities as a Member of Parliament:

“Members must make full disclosure of support which they receive in their capacity as a Member of Parliament. Such support must not be used for any purpose other than in connection with their parliamentary duties.”

(Thanks to Chatgtp)

Like LizzieD, I trust that Grantanow is not implying any wrongdoing on AR's part.

Indeed.

Doodledog Wed 27-Aug-25 10:31:22

Molly why is it that people saying things you disagree with are 'spouting a mantra'?

That rather contradicts the impression you like to (try to) give that you are impartial and well-balanced in your posts, doesn't it?

Strange comment in the context of this topic ronib🤔

Perhaps you could elaborate on what you mean?

ronib Wed 27-Aug-25 11:06:31

Can’t remember the guy buying designer specs for Starmer? Clothes for Lady Starmer. He lent out his flat to Starmer?

Allira Wed 27-Aug-25 11:06:54

but I would imagine she will relocate to Hove eventually because she obviously likes it there

🤔 imagining isn't fact.

PoliticsNerd Wed 27-Aug-25 11:07:30

Wow! Where did you get the money to pay for your home, Grantanow?

Allira Wed 27-Aug-25 11:07:48

My gripe is the fact that it has been reported that the flat is a band D for council tax. My modest three bed house, worth less than half the price she paid, is graded band E!!

I think whoever quoted that is wrong, l think it's Band B. The price she paid has widely been reported as £700K but it was £800K, sloppy reporting.

Band B? 😯
Could you hear me squeaking?

ronib Wed 27-Aug-25 11:15:17

Lord Alli. He has donated to AR in the past. And others in Labour who can’t afford their own clothes, specs etc.

Oreo Wed 27-Aug-25 11:26:20

There should be no freebies given to any politicians it puts pressure on them to return favours.

LizzieDrip Wed 27-Aug-25 11:37:52

Lord Alli. He has donated to AR in the past. And others in Labour who can’t afford their own clothes, specs etc.

So, are you suggesting that a Labour benefactor has donated money to AR to enable her to buy a flat for her personal use?

Wow!

ronib Wed 27-Aug-25 11:53:22

Heaven forbid LizzieDrip. What a thought - what I do suggest is that given the lack of transparency in government AR rules out that the flat was gifted in any way. There’s very little detail to the financials …. As usual you could say but there you go …..

Wow!

Probably no need, ronib
Ms Rayner made a substantial profit on the sale of her ex-Council property (£48,500) and, let's face it, MPs receive a considerable amount of money besides their salaries. By the time they claim expenses for living costs, they hardly need draw on their salaries. That is why so many of them of all parties end up incredibly wealthy after serving as MPs and especially as Ministers.

From Rags to Riches- the story of so many MPs.

Allira Wed 27-Aug-25 12:03:19

According to Finance Monthly, ronib
Deputy Prime Minister of the United Kingdom Angela Rayner’s Net Worth is around £4.7 Million ($6 Million) as of 2025.

ronib Wed 27-Aug-25 12:04:00

Well that’s one line of reasoning Allira but Lord Alli has been generous in providing for fairly basic items which would ordinarily come from the MPs themselves? There’s no harm in some clarity is there?

ronib Wed 27-Aug-25 12:05:02

Again for someone with a value of £4.7 million, why the need for handouts?
