Since I can’t see a thread about the Deputy PM and Housing Minister, Angela Rayner I am starting one. 😉

All the main newspapers are headlining this story but most have a paywall and this one doesn’t.

There’s no doubt she has come far from her humble beginnings but this demonstrates to me that she is very out of touch with people.

‘Woman has house where she needs to be for work, uses work provided premises when she has to be at her primary place of work and buys a home for herself to use when she is not working.’
Sorry, I don’t see the shock horror.

Casdon Sun 24-Aug-25 20:22:16

She has bought a flat at the seaside, and has a house in her constituency. In London she lives in the flat allocated to her ministerial role, which she obviously doesn’t own.

How many MPs have the same arrangement- many. How many Gransnetters have a second home - quite a lot. Is it big news just because it’s Angela Rayner and the right wing press don’t like her - yes. Are we going to fall for a repeat of the Green Trousersuit thread - I sincerely hope not.

The headline in the article in today’s Times was totally misleading ( my partners just read it out to me). They do that knowing that most people won’t read the whole article angry

Ilovecheese Sun 24-Aug-25 20:33:25

Just a nasty non story.

“Angela Rayner has purchased a seaside apartment on the south coast of England for more than £700,000, meaning the deputy prime minister occupies three properties.

On Saturday night it was reported that Rayner, who is also housing secretary, bought the three-bedroom flat near Brighton earlier this year.

She already owns a home in her constituency in Ashton-under-Lyne, which she bought in 2016 for £375,00 and is now valued at £650,000, while also making use of a grace-and-favour ministerial apartment in Admiralty House in Westminster.”
This is The Times article. Which points out that the third house is a Grace and favour house which she doesn’t actually own. So a totally misleading article.

Oh good grief - what a load of nonsense!

Most MPs have accommodation both in London and in their constituency, and I do not begrudge her a holiday home, just like many people on Gransnet.

This sort of trumped up rubbish just to dis someone who is working their tripe out on our behalf makes me sick.

eazybee Sun 24-Aug-25 21:09:51

Angela Rayner is responsible for housing; many people are unable to obtain a place to live, and it behoves her to live in a reasonable manner. Few people have second homes, and no-one needs three, although I suspect the Brighton residence is a love nest for her relationship with Sam Tarry.

She profited from the sale of her much subsidised council house rather than leaving it to be rented by someone else in need; I did not agree with Margaret Thatcher's sale of council houses for that reason.
So much vitriol has been thrown at Tory Party by Rayner in particular; her own behaviour is certainly no better, and she deserves all the opprobrium she receives at present.

foxie48 Sun 24-Aug-25 21:25:39

As long as she pays the additional council tax like everyone else, what is the problem? I support Labour but I don't live in a hutch and wear a hair shirt, I just don't mind paying my taxes and contributing my fair share to society.

Casdon Sun 24-Aug-25 21:27:16

I expect your ideal Labour politician would be so lily white that they would sprout wings and shower rose petals on the country eazybee, rather than be a normal mortal who does just the same as other people do. Hey Ho.

LizzieDrip Sun 24-Aug-25 21:27:45

How many posters on GN own more than one house?

Quite a few I think Primrose, if I recall from other threads about rental properties, holiday homes etc🤔

Of course, they would say ‘I worked hard to be able to buy a second home’. Same for AR then🤷‍♀️

None story!

I own two houses and I am very proud to see that in the approx Nearly 20 years since we bought it, it has provided a very nice, well maintained home for local people who haven’t a chance of getting social housing.

We had a break of 3 years when we rented it out for holiday lets but we are back to local renters now.

I don’t think it’s right that people leave their second or third homes empty for most of the year. Angela could fill her spare ones with people who really need a roof over their heads. Barring the Admiralty one though for obvious reasons.

ronib Sun 24-Aug-25 22:11:28

I recently read of a scheme to host Ukrainian refugees. The host is paid £350 plus £50 for each extra person who is housed. Sounds like a great idea.

lixy Sun 24-Aug-25 22:12:09

Well done you Primrose, that’s great work.

Angela Raynor is allowed to have a personal space too don’t you think? Somewhere away from her work places? I still think this whole thing is a non-story and so have nothing more to say on this thread.

MayBee70 Sun 24-Aug-25 22:12:25

Which spare homes? She’d be criticised if she didn’t have a house in her constituency. The grace and favour house isn’t hers anyway. This is just another attempted slur on Rayners character.

MayBee70 Sun 24-Aug-25 22:17:23

I have asked HQ to amend the title of this thread but they say it doesn’t break guidelines and I need to do so on the thread itself. So I am now asking politely that the OP has the title amended as imo it is totally misleading. This, of course, won’t happen. I’m finding some aspects of gransnet pretty disgusting at the moment and am happy to be banned.

AR owns 2 homes.

1 in her constituency, which she will presumably occupy every weekend and during recess when not in the HoC, and she will be undertaking her constituency duties.

1 is a holiday home, which she will occupy with her family during holidays. (Do you disagree with people having holiday homes?)

Neither home, therefore, will be empty ‘for most of the year’.

So, how do you propose she could rent out either of these homes. As a landlord yourself, I’m sure you know that wouldn’t work.

Unlike some, AR hasn’t bought these homes as investments, to make money from renting them out (albeit to ‘grateful’ locals) - she’s bought them for her and her family to use.

Having said this is a non story, I’ve commented on it far more than it deserves so I’ll shut up now.

She does if she’s in a love relationship with Sam Tarry! He’s awful.🤭

Why on Earth?
Of course the mods won’t amend the title, why would they?
Why would you be banned either?
Is the hot weather getting to some people?🤷🏼‍♀️

Oreo Sun 24-Aug-25 22:52:04

Like most politicians Rayner will feather her own nest.

No reason a Socialist should have three residences, is there?

LizzieDrip I don't know about you, but most people in the circles I move get about 6 weeks at most holiday leave each year. Given the year composes 52 weeks, I'd say that would mean a holiday home would be unoccupied far more than it would be occupied. Unless you're saying that MPs get over half a year in holidays?
