Since I can’t see a thread about the Deputy PM and Housing Minister, Angela Rayner I am starting one. 😉

All the main newspapers are headlining this story but most have a paywall and this one doesn’t.

There’s no doubt she has come far from her humble beginnings but this demonstrates to me that she is very out of touch with people.

What an odious woman AR is! No, Nigel Farage was not humiliated. The UK was! We truly are the laughing stock of the world. So much investment will be lost. We have lost far too much already since Labour came into power.

Did you know that he was paid £13,000 pound or dollars to give a talk to a group on anti abortionists in America? Those are the sort of morals that Farage has. And yes, he was humiliated by the Democrat senator who totally summed him up and said how unpatriotic it was of him to go to another country and bad mouth the UK.

Reading the new little prick that P Nis saying, in her latest attack on me,

If people were taxed on sheer nastiness against people who cannot answer back, I do wonder if this countries problems could be solved!
I wonder she doesn’t realise how much extra tax that would involve for her.

It's tedious, but it's your turn. Switch off!

It is indeed alarming when the Secretary of State for Housing, and the Deputy Prime Minister of a government which is imposing taxes on second home owners, makes a 'mistake,' an 'error which she is doing her best to rectify' in the payment of stamp duty owed and making erroneous claims as to which was/is her main residence.
I have no faith in her, I have no faith in Keir Starmer, and I have little faith in the Investigation to which she has referred herself., the result of an increasingly duplicitous government which they lead.

whether they knew about xyz, who they trusted and why
In my defence Doodledog, if this was directed at my use of those words, I did say that maybe this was the case with AR based on my experiences. But, like everyone else, I really don't know, and FWIW I've never mentioned her show of regret and what that means. As stated, I'll let the investigation decide, and I won't be jumping to conclusions.

Forgive me if this has already been mentioned as I’ve been skimming through this thread, but I heard some commentator say the leak regarding AR’s property purchase came from within the Labour Party. Politics really is a dirty business.

Nigel Farage was interviewed on TV tonight and was very kind about AR. He did say if it had been him he would have been slated far more than her and he laughed about it.

He could have been vocal about her but he wasn’t. He was fair.

Possibly because he has no room to criticize anybody else, he was fined for misspending of public funds when he was a Euro MP.

Or that his own property dealings have involved tax avoidance too? I did see that he doesn’t own his house in Clacton, it is in the name of his partner. Perhaps the transparency that is required of Rayner should apply to all MPs.

Off topic a bit, but threads like these make me seriously doubt the fairness of trial by jury. I have always felt that being judged by one's peers is a system worth defending, but when I see how many people are happy to jump to conclusions about others' motives (eg why someone is showing regret, whether they knew about xyz, who they trusted and why) with no evidence to back it up it gives me real cause for concern. And that's without the blatant prejudice against people who don't dress, speak and look like they do, and the refusal to respect the 'innocent until proven guilty' basis on which the system is predicated.

Agreed Doodledog.

What would be more useful is to spell out the actual stamp duty policy on holding property as a beneficiary of a trust. Many people may have been left property in a will , held in trust but cannot be immediately sold. If their share is more than £40k, then the higher rate stamp duty must be paid on a new purchase.
I assume that these trusts may also be efficient for inheritance tax purposes? We can thank the last Conservative government for this legislation! Perhaps it needs to be repealed?

So where are the headlines saying "Er, sorry. We now realise Angela Raynor only owns one property".

^and like all politicians (from all parties) she is only showing regret once she’s been found out!^
True.
Combine that with her actual role, and the aspirations of her party re second homes . . . whether or not you’ve put your other hose into a trust and all the wriggling that’s now going on. It doesn’t help the LP’s image.

Rubbish. She seems to have only just found out that she may have been misinformed. How can you do anything until you know. THIS HAPPENS.

This is why the IR have a choice of ways to make this right, because THIS HAPPENS. One of those ways is to do nothing if nothing is actually wrong. The others take into account whether someone has been misinformed through to deliberately avoiding tax.

If people were taxed on sheer nastiness against people who cannot answer back, I do wonder if this countries problems could be solved!

The issue is not that she owns 2 houses and has the use of a third, the issue is that she avoided paying the extra stamp duty that she should have paid on the purchase of the second property, she tried to pretend it was her main property. All those of you lucky enough to own a second home will have paid extra stamp duty, so why hasn’t she? I don’t believe she was badly advised, and like all politicians (from all parties) she is only showing regret once she’s been found out!

The apartment in Hove is the only property she owns, so I can see the source of confusion.

Was that before or after he was totally humiliated in America?

That's cheered me up.

So glad you too don't think the gossip gets us anywhere escaped. I'm sure those carrying out the investigation know what they have to do. I can't see them referring to GN for advice. Time for everyonevto get out and do something more interesting, I think.

^I don’t envy her, a target of class snobbery.^

No, for her lack of ability.

I think you may be part of a minority on that one. Not on this scandal and gossip thread (it's a long way from a "news and politics" discussion) with its sound of clacking needles and cackles, but with the majority who don't think it's their job to act as judge and jury but will wait to see the outcome of the investigation.

I've decided to be a bit more understanding this morning, not that I ever accused AR of deception or fraud, but because someone around her probably wasn't supporting her properly.

Maybe she's not the brightest button in the box on such things, and I count myself in on this too. I've occasionally sat in meetings with personal accountants, financial advisors and lawyers, and just nodded because, to be honest, it was sometimes boringly above my head, I had other things on my busy mind or was just uninterested in the nitty gritty. Employing someone to act for you should mean that you pretty much trust them do all the work for you and avoid any pitfalls.

AR just took legal advice, signed the deeds, and assumed all was well. But was that advice inaccurate and flawed, is the question? Certainly the tax lawyers will be found negligent if they didn't point out every ramification to AR, and I think this is where the investigation needs to start.

foxie48 Thu 04-Sept-25 07:53:03

According to the reports that I have read she owns one, the flat in Hove recently purchased. She does not has a financial interest in the house in Ashton but because she stays there part time to co parent her disabled son with her ex husband, it still counts as her main home as she's deriving a benefit. She needed to pay a market rent when she stayed there. It's aimed primarily at preventing people from passing their home to children whilst continuing to live there rent free to avoid IHT. I can see why she might have been given the wrong advice and tbh I think it seems illogical and rather punitive in the case of protecting the home for a disabled child. However, I don't make the rules.
