I think a better example of hypocrisy is Rushanara Ali. Her behaviour was indefensible, and it was absolutely right that she resigned.

27% of MPs own more than 1 property. 40% of MPs have registered an interest in more than 1 property.

Some MPs have interest in multiple properties.

MPs generally are three times more likely to own more than one home than the general public.

Even if AR is paying all tax due I think buying a second or third home in a seaside town when Labour is discouraging second home ownership on the grounds local people can't afford homes is the height of hypocrisy in a housing Minister.

It’s not against the law but how can the people have any trust in a government whose members deliberately and openly flout its stated policies.

Seeing that happen was what sunk the Tory government and what will sink this one. I guess the individuals concerned will not worry, having made their personal fortunes.

I did give the benefit of the doubt by saying that I don't think it is necessarily meant the way it comes across. I just don't think people always consider the impact on others of what they are doing. It's easy just to see the personal advantages - it's human nature, I suppose.

As for the 'hypocrisy' of which AR is accused - how does that compare to people who used to say they didn't need the WFA but still took it and then complained endlessly when it was withdrawn?

As an aside I'm just interested where posters meet these people who incessantly gloat, crow or boast about selling up in London and buying a pile at the seaside. Tell me, is it at the U3A, at the WI or in the pub? I've never met anyone who sells in the capital and buys properties at the coast, like I have myself, and then proceeds to brag about their winnings. It's not mentioned at dinner parties we have, there's no gloating, and if anyone were that bothered, they could see on rightmove what I sold my London house for anyway and what I bought with the proceeds. So why crow? We just consider ourselves fortunate to be in such a beautiful part of the country.

I don't think Angela Rayner sold a place in London to buy her Hove apartment? I don't think she crows either. She'd just say it as it is! I get that in her position it seems a bit hypocritical, but it's not against the law.
Too many people having too much to say about other people's private business here. On this one, I don't see her in a bad light.

Her actions are about the same as when the previous government directed the public to obey distancing rules and more during Covid, but decided they didn't apply to them because 'reasons'. So this Labour government (quite rightly in my opinion) thinks owning second homes (and especially holiday homes) has an unfair impact on housing needs and communities, but also thinks if any of its members wish to participate in buying holiday homes, that's absolutely fine. OK got it. Wrong for thee but not for me!

If we look back to see how many on GN criticised (quite rightly) the actions of those in the previous government who spouted rules, but ignored them personally, would it be the same as those who are defending AR?

She has bought a flat at the seaside, and has a house in her constituency. In London she lives in the flat allocated to her ministerial role, which she obviously doesn’t own.

How many MPs have the same arrangement- many. How many Gransnetters have a second home - quite a lot. Is it big news just because it’s Angela Rayner and the right wing press don’t like her - yes. Are we going to fall for a repeat of the Green Trousersuit thread - I sincerely hope not.

Incidentally, I've just seen a photograph of people who are on a pilgrimage for peace and they are abstaining from food at the same time in support of the plight of those in Gaza. That seems to be rather foolish to me. It will not help the people of Gaza one jot.

The above are all perfectly credible reasons why so many are deeply concerned by Angela Rayner's gross hypocrisy about the housing crisis in this country.

What she does not seem to realise is that when you are a prominent public figure you do not have 'days off', or in her case 'off days.'
According to tomorrow's DT she has declared her home in Ashton-under-Lyme as her primary residence, meaning the council tax due on her grace and favour residence in Admiralty House is paid by the taxpayer. So apparently she spends more time in Ashton-under Lyme, 200 miles away than she does in London. Or Hove.

So can we expect a speech about change of policy?

I don't see any reason why not. The current government is known for more U turns than the cupboard under my sink. Plenty of time for more knee jerk policies yet.

I do think it's a fair criticism if someone is a member of a party which has spoken out against second home ownership then, when elected, does that very same thing which their party is against.
