Trump's exercise of power and expectation of loyalty

Again from Channel 4 News. I can only agree with the comment "more Kim Jong-un than leader of the free world".

Towards the end Financial Times columnist Jillian Ted,who's also the head of King's College, Cambridge explains the consequences of Trump's moves, should he carry them through.

I know not everyone likes the internet but this is the source of diverse opinion these days.

Trump may reign supreme in the White House, but world power is shifting eastwards.

Chocolatelovinggran Thu 04-Sept-25 07:49:27

He has one style of leadership -bullying and flattering, and this has proved quite effective at home, but Mr Trump has found that these strategies have fallen on stony ground in international relations. Other leaders smile at him, and then go off to talk and plan amongst themselves.

According to his Truth Social account, The Orange One is upset because the other despots didn't invite him to the parade in China hahaha.

No it won't, unfortunately.

I'm afraid having listened to watched what's going on in America today you are right. With Farage ... well isn't he conspiring against the UK? It seems (Guardian and Sun, apparently) that Farage is urging the UK to apply sanctions to the UK. Surely this isn't true? If it were how could he come back without being arrested as a traitor?

Do not visit the USA to study, to gamble, to Cruise, for a sporting event, for business or a holiday. It is not safe. They dont want us, they dont like us. “We dont want them” trump the wannabe dictator said. Please do not support the economy of a rogue state. Europe and others have lost trust in the USA. America is no longer a friend and ally of Canada, Britain and the EU.

Precisely this. We're doing our own private boycott of as much USA stuff as possible in our family. I have Canadian relatives and I stand with Canada.

Maremia Sun 31-Aug-25 16:55:23

Yes, Gfplux, we all have consumer power, and money matters 'bigly' in Trump's kingdom.

I heard a bit of this on the radio – the sycophants' performance – but it's even worse seeing it for real. Aren't these people EMBARASSED to talk like this. Unbelievable. And watch Trump, soaking it all up as it feeds his ego.

Maremia Sat 30-Aug-25 18:00:25

Some people have been able to 'fight back'. There are lots of marches planned this weekend in towns and cities, in the US. JD Vance gets a very poor reception wherever he goes, and there are rumours that his wife is complaining that she 'didn't sign up for this'.

Applegran Sat 30-Aug-25 16:47:04

I imagine those people saying all those sycophantic things to Trump are mostly reasonably intelligent but know that speaking truth to this particular man in power will harm them in some way or other. It needs a lot of people in high places plus the media all to speak up and act - and perhaps one brave and good person to rally the troops to oppose this egoistic and dangerous man.

gran5up Sat 30-Aug-25 16:43:42

Regardless of the sickening sycophants, what I am struggling with is that not all Americans kow tow to Tango Man, so how is it not possible for a group of rational human beings on the American political scene to arrange:
proper criminal justice for the many felonies
production of the Epstein "files" or info in any form
an unbiassed medical assessment, via newsclips if necessary, of Trump's true state of health, mental and physical?
And maybe even proper control of his dim wits and Sharpie pens??

Applegran Sat 30-Aug-25 16:43:02

Trump creates fear, which is what dictators do, and fear keeps people quiet and sycophantic.

AGAA4 Sat 30-Aug-25 16:13:57

Any leader surrounded by sickening sycophants is bad for the country. Some opposition and disagreement is very necessary for balance.
Trump can't cope with criticism which says a lot about someone who is the leader of a powerful country.

Romola Sat 30-Aug-25 15:55:14

What does Trump have to do before the scales fall from the eyes of his sycophantic followers?
He is becoming a dictator and for the time being, the members of his cabinet fear for their heads if they don't join in with the idolatry.

sazz1 Sat 30-Aug-25 15:33:30

The only thing I agreed with Trump about in the beginning was deporting illegal immigrants. Many were drug cartels, violent gangs and running protection rackets. However, his henchmen have gone totally overboard with the deportations eg grabbing students off the streets, tearing families apart who were born in USA etc and dumping them in foreign countries, prisons etc often not their country of origin. He's took it far too far.

ExaltedWombat Sat 30-Aug-25 15:05:30

But we criticise British governments for refusing to support their leadership and degenerating into in-fighting.

Camry1952 Sat 30-Aug-25 15:00:10

windmill1: He already considers himself a King. That's not enough to satisfy his ego. His aim is to be a dictator and he's well on the way.

That’s a powerful clip—thank you for sharing. The comparison really underscores the concern about how democratic norms can erode when leaders lean toward consolidating too much power. Jillian Tett always brings a sharp perspective, especially tying the politics back to economic consequences. And you’re right—the internet, for all its flaws, gives us access to a much wider range of voices than we’d get from just one news source. It’s good to see these discussions happening openly.

Thank you Angela. It did seem to offer real information via both Jillian Tett and the presenter.

Golly, this was weird, wasn't it?
The analysis by Jillian Tett was very interesting, but it was the first few minutes that I found disturbing. Where is the backbone of this group of .. sycophants ( ruder words did suggest themselves) ? I was unnerved by the expression on the face of Mr Trump, too.
windmill, I'm inclined to agree with you, but think that Mr Trump's fantasy is more Henry VIII than Charles III.

Those sycophants are disgusting. Clearly they hope to get something out of it. But what? Presidents only have a limited term, although with his deployment of the National Guard it looks as if he's aiming for permanence.

2026 is the 250th anniversary of America's independence from UK and the rejection of the Monarchy.

Donald Trump would move Heaven and earth to be King of America.

He gets far too much airplay. He was made by the media and I wish the media would destroy him instead of making out he is in the least bit news worthy.

I think if you listen to the comments on this link you can see the tide is turning. It always does. The question I would like the answer to is - will it be fast enough and soon enough?
