“Migrants are more important than residents" A statement that the Labour party will live to regret?

I think so.
It was their appeal statement in Court. To overturn the previous decision about housing migrants in that hotel in Epping it was their salvo.

Well I think it’s just put a nail in their coffin.

What do you think?

No I am not. But your comment made me wonder. Of course, like you, I get my information from many sources 😊 so that we get a true picture. Wouldn’t you agree.

When it comes to the law I get my information from lawyers, not the right wing media. Who (the media), as the-is thread is demonstrating, have a tendency to lie.

We're treading on very dangerous ground when people start claiming that judges are politically motivated.

Dangerous in what way?
I can think of several ways I guess, Which way are you meaning?

Governments have to abide by the law as it stands. they are at liberty to change it, but until they do so (if they do so) the law stands.

That is something I never quite understand.
Does that mean that a previous judge[where there is an overturn] is incompetent in some way?

We’ve had masked people hanging flags on the seafront. The council will swiftly remove them.

Patriots all 😄😄

I think not.

What a shame. Hopefully there’ll be plenty more going up to replace them.

^Nobody in the real world wants sex offenders, drug dealers, criminals, members of terrorist groups, economic migrants holed up in taxpayer funded hotels in their communities^

woodenspoon how do you know that the asylum seekers awaiting their applications to be processed are not genuine?

How do you know that they fit your descriptions above?

Because many have been in court LizzieDrip and convicted. Some are in court this week. You surely know that.

Are you asking me? No I'm not.

Are you a lawyer?

MaizieD Fri 29-Aug-25 18:03:21

Lucy Connolly, Ricky Jones. Two examples.

Perhaps you should find a lawyer to explain why they suffered the penalties they did. Not just parrot what you've read in the media.

LizzieDrip Fri 29-Aug-25 18:03:19

Clean, BASIC accommodation ought to be provided. A doctor, nurse & dentist available

That is what’s provided.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Fri 29-Aug-25 18:02:52

I think this judgement should never have been appealed. The government have completely misjudged the feelings of its people.

The country is not ‘being flooded’, despite what the media, Tories and Reform would have you believe.

Those seeking asylum via ‘irregular’ routes (because there are no ‘regular’ routes) make up a tiny minority of the immigrants in this, upon whom we depend.

Thank God for the Human Rights lawyers who tried to maintain the dignity of this country by supporting those fleeing war and oppression. We used to be a country that offered sanctuary to those in need.

I realise my view is unpopular on GN - I’m fine with that.

Nobody would mind those genuinely fleeing war and oppression as you put it.

Nobody in the real world wants sex offenders, drug dealers, criminals, members of terrorist groups, economic migrants holed up in taxpayer funded hotels in their communities. Why should they?

^Why weren’t bus loads of right wing, flag draped protesters flying around the country 2 years ago - when the Tories were in power🤔^

Because the country was not being flooded by thousands of illegal migrants at that time. Every attempt that was made to deport them was thwarted by Human Rights lawyers.
Why have you only realised just this?

I hope that you are never on the wrong end of any removal of your human rights.

Governments have to abide by the law as it stands. they are at liberty to change it, but until they do so (if they do so) the law stands.

We're treading on very dangerous ground when people start claiming that judges are politically motivated.

I have no doubt that this calumny has been started by the media, it started with the infamous ;Enemies of the people' headline in the Daily Mail when the High Court judged that Article 50 had to invoked with the consent of Parliament, not by the PM alone. It's been rumbling around a lot in the past 18 months.

It is crucial to democracy that we have an independent judiciary who base their judgements on the law of the land. The law as enacted by Parliament.

The awful mockery of justice that is happening in the US at the moment, with its politically appointed judiciary, should make people stop and think hard about what they are saying.

Then it behoves the judiciary to be seen to be upholding the law without fear or favour and since this government has come into power that doesn’t seem the case.

Lucy Connolly, Ricky Jones. Two examples.

woodenspoon Fri 29-Aug-25 17:57:11

The Germans have real problems as do the Swiss. At least in Germany they are deporting them.

The UK government seem to make it difficult to deport them. Too many with vested interests doing their utmost to stop it. Charities, the Bishop of York has said it’s unchristian not that there will be much Christianity left in the UK at this rate, but I digress. Others with vested interests are the hotels and those with houses of multiple occupancy all earning a tidy sum. Some MPs also try to prevent it. Other countries give them the bare minimum. Not here.

Speaking logically, there was no other option. There is no alternative accommodation immediately available. I do realise that logic is out of the window on threads like this of course though.

Tories made a mess for 14 years.
However Labour (in opposition) also had 14 years … to come up with a workable solution as they vetoed Rwanda. (Which even Germany is pondering - outsourcing to other countries now the situation has escalated exponentially).

Clean, BASIC accommodation ought to be provided.
A doctor, nurse & dentist available.
Cut the ‘pull factor’ as Macron told us months ago.

It was the Conservative party that started housing migrants in hotels. Labour have said they will stop doing so but it can’t happen overnight. Yet another click bait heading that gransnet are happy to allow.

Not click bait at all.

I believe Lord Justice Bean is involved in Matrix, isn’t that where Cherie Blair plied her trade? This has been reported online so it’s allegedly but still…..

Great username!

Ive had that username for a long time, like you. Is that all you can come up with.

Charming reply! Was it really necessary? Honestly, some people on here need to find a bit of humour and kindness! Why would anyone want to hurt somebody else deliberately? The mind boggles!

I think you’ll find the person replying to me was being sarcastic. If you follow her usual replies to those against unfettered immigration you’ll see she’s well against those of us who don’t like it. My reply was in response to hers. There was no humour attached in either reply.
