Admits she didn’t pay enough tax. She cried this morning, on a SKY interview. Said she’d received poor legal advice, didn’t pay enough stamp duty on her new home in Hove and has referred herself to the Ethics Committee. Starmer still supports her.

Will she survive this debacle do we think?

Verdict reached this afternoon apparently by the Ethics Committee.

Heads you lose Starmer, tails too I’m afraid. So much for your ‘2nd phase reset’ you tried to get across on Monday.

It’s unravelling.

How many senior ministers went in previous governments though? It would be more of a turn up for the books if a government served a full term with no sackings or resignations in the top team. I think off the top of my head there were two in the two year Sunak government, Braverman and Zahawi?

Of course if Rayner has not been honest in her dealings she should go, but don’t make it out to be a bigger deal than it is for the future of the government, taking the past into account, it’s not exceptional.

Yes, the timing of all this is interesting, isn't it?

Good lord.

Apparently local residents are surprised by the value put on the house; the highest similar house in the neighbourhood sold recently at £525,000.

David49 Thu 04-Sept-25 20:07:27

The situation is just this.

If AR can prove she was misled by professionals she will pay the tax owed with no penaty. So let’s see the instructions she gave the tax accountants.

Iam64 Thu 04-Sept-25 20:07:14

Blinko, thanks for posting.

icanhandthemback Thu 04-Sept-25 20:07:05

So far 2 law companies have said they did not give AR the tax law advice. One has not had dealings with her since 2020 (they set up the Trust) and the second one was the Conveyancer who calculated the tax on the information given to him by his client. I am hopeful she can provide official investigation of the tax advice she was given or she will be in trouble.

Blinko Thu 04-Sept-25 19:48:37

I'm afraid these slurs typify this appalling onslaught on AR. Disgusting!

Iam64 Thu 04-Sept-25 19:47:33

I’ve had a demand from HMRC for £980 . My pension is taxed before it arrives with me. My (small) savings managed by a financial advisor with total open contact with HMRC. I phoned, she checked and got back to me saying don’t worry, it’s HMRC error they’ll take it monthly

So I’m not trying to avoid paying tax but here I am

Mollygo Thu 04-Sept-25 19:46:50

Orly, Thats a dreadful comparison.

Iam64 Thu 04-Sept-25 19:42:42

Thanks Allira - xposted with you there,

Criticise Angela Raynor’s politics or tax issues but don’t stoop so low

She's hypocritical as she was always first to pull the trigger at others' misdemeanors. And Reeves's and Starmer's support for her is like being backed up by Fred and Rose West. She;s admitted she was wrong not to pay Stamp Duty so why not just pay it into the Treasury coffers rather than refer herself to the Standard's committee in the hope they will let her off the hook.

Comparing Reeves and Starmer to people convicted of sexually abusing and murdering children is disgusting.

foxie48 Thu 04-Sept-25 19:15:55

Ugh,she's paying it!. She's agreed she's liable for it!

had this been a member of any of the opposition she would be up there leading the attack

But of course, and with the solid backing of her current supporters.

Had this been you or I as ordinary citizens HMRC would likely have had us facing charges,

Definitely. Many have met with the you have underpaid your tax even when your tax is deducted at source.

ignorance of the law has never been an excuse

Evidently it is, if you’re a A super busy woman, with a very demanding 24/7 type job, who has no legal or accounting qualifications

Why don't you read her statement?

Because it’s all lies.

Prove it.

It should be easy for Raynor to prove that the lawyers gave her the wrong advice so let’s hear it, my guess is that she gave them wrong information

FranP Thu 04-Sept-25 18:48:08

A super busy woman, with a very demanding 24/7 type job, who has no legal or accounting qualifications, living miles from her family and needing a home. Brighton is an easy commute into central London (thousands do it daily).

Me, I would hand my details over to my property solicitor and expect him to do his job properly. Sadly, this is an example of one not doing so. If anyone should resign, perhaps it should be them. (We are also currently having to deal with one who did not either).

It is also an example of Tory party trying to make it her fault, not because they care, but because they want to stir the pot about something irrelevant.

SaxonGrace Thu 04-Sept-25 18:40:38

Posted in haste. Applause to Realky ‘s post as it identifies the real serious hypocrisy here

And this, the owner of the Daily Mail:
The Harmsworth family controls the media empire through offshore entities, such as a Bermuda-registered company and trusts in the British Virgin Islands, which hold the family's business and property interests.
Inheritance tax avoidance:
By holding assets through offshore structures and claiming non-dom status, the family aims to avoid paying British inheritance tax on the transfer of wealth to future generations.
