Admits she didn’t pay enough tax. She cried this morning, on a SKY interview. Said she’d received poor legal advice, didn’t pay enough stamp duty on her new home in Hove and has referred herself to the Ethics Committee. Starmer still supports her.

Will she survive this debacle do we think?

Spinnaker Wed 03-Sept-25 13:08:22

I hope not

MrsQuigley Wed 03-Sept-25 13:12:13

I very much hope not. Even with ‘poor legal advice’ a tax underpayment of around £40000 is rather noticeable. Have heard her mentioned as a successor to Kier Starmer and her political views are so far left they are off the page.

Greendress Wed 03-Sept-25 13:12:39

Crocodile Tears . If the Deputy PM cannot get sound legal advice, God help us all if she eventually gets the top job.

FGT this is already being discussed on the other AR thread. I did wonder about starting a new thread but decided not.

Some people are says setting up a Trust can be a minefield. I’m sure it can be. However that’s not the point in my opinion.

Angela Rayner consulted a supposedly top firm for advice.

I would be very interested to know the timing of the setting up of the Trust on the other house and her allegedly transferring her 25% interest in it into the Trust. If that happened just before she bought the flat, it smacks of deliberate tax evasion. Which is illegal.

It depends how much detail was given to her advisers I suppose. I wonder how they feel about their reputation being tarnished in this way? Certainly not good PR for them regarding clients.

Let’s hope we are all given full transparency on the matter soon as until then this debacle won’t go away.

PaynesGrey Wed 03-Sept-25 16:54:41

Why don't you read her statement?

Have you watched her interview with Beth Rigby where timings are fully explained?

I’d like to read the statement from her tax adviser more. What was disclosed and when. Always good to cross check surely?

Angela Rayner still has an interest in the constituency house in Ashton under Lyne - which triggers the payment of additional stamp duty on the flat in Hove.

Someone in her position cannot possibly have failed to understand that she still had an interest in the constituency house - she would have had clear and detailed advice when the Trust was set up.

I imagine the tax advisers will be double checking what they were told about all this. Their reputation is on the line and they won’t like it if they are thrown under the bus.

Both sides to this will want their say as both sides have reputations to safeguard. There’s a lot at stake here, not just £40k.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Wed 03-Sept-25 17:53:31

I think best to publish the advice - redacting personal details. What’s the problem? The hole is getting deeper.

I have watched her interview, read her statement and read various newspapers' accounts of the purpose and methods of setting up trust funds.

She needs to go.
This is the second exploration of her property affairs and she has not come out well from either.

There will be a full paper trail of all the advice she was given, the information she supplied to the advisers and a timeline of events surely?

You'd like to think so (not you specifically) but this is the labour party - it's either been shredded or doctored 😉

You've read all this stuff. Presumably you can say what she did wrong.

Well, have you?

There are a lot of crystal ball gazers here or people who seem to think they were flies on the wall when these transactions took place.

How do you know she had clear and detailed advice when the trust was set up?

She says she sold her remianing interest in the Ashton house to the trust so when she bought the Hove flat (with the proceeds plus morgage) she only owned one property.

This gov.uk link clearly states:

Higher rates for additional properties

You’ll usually have to pay 5% on top of SDLT rates if buying a new residential property means you’ll OWN more than one.

www.gov.uk/stamp-duty-land-tax/residential-property-rates

The question I have is who provided the capital for the trust to buy out her remaining share in the Ashton house?

Solicitors are not tax accountants and should not be relied on for tax advice.

Cronesrule Wed 03-Sept-25 18:20:17

I feel sorry for her. Sounds like a genuine mistake and there is clearly a media witch hunt against her. She’s a strong woman with principles and it has yet to be proven otherwise. People are so quick to judge but I wonder why someone in her position would risk tax evasion. Inevitable that it would come to light.

This is hilarious, reading the Labour supporters desperately trying to defend her 😂😂😂 Imagine if this had been a Tory minister back in the day??!!!! Listen to yourselves …….!

As others have said, she needs to go!

The media ( and the people who own it) must be pretty scared of her the way they’re desperate to get her thrown out of parliament.
