Cabinet Reshuffle

Three women now hold three of the top jobs:
Yvette Cooper as Foreign Secretary
Shabana Mahmood is Home Secretary
Rachel Reeves remains as Chancellor of the Exchequeur.

Interesting.

David Lammy is Deputy Prime Minister and Justice Secretary.

Lucy Powell and Ian Murray have lost their jobs as Leader of the House and Scottish Secretary.

But this is a very wide ranging Cabinet reshuffle. Must have taken quite some time to plan?
Am disappointed that Ed Milliband and Rachel Reeves retained their positions.

RR is still Chancellor but has been shored up with a couple of economic whizzes to ‘help’.

Just looked up Peter Kyle the new business minister to see which businesses he has run. You know the rest.…

I would have preferred Yvette Cooper as deputy PM.

I can never forgive David Lammy for his comments regarding women and cervix’s, amongst other things.

Well let’s face it, YC was dreadful as Home Secretary. She did nothing whatsoever to “stop the boats”.

Yes Doodledog, we don’t want to lose the king of the north from Manchester
I wish he and Yvette had agreed one step back to ensure the other became leader, rather than Corbyn

He’s a good Mayor and was very active during the election campaign

He’s the big fish in the pond there in the NW too, and it’s his home turf. If I were him I’d think more than twice about returning to Westminster.

Iam64 Fri 05-Sept-25 21:12:39

He’s said he’s very happy as mayor and has no desire to return to Westminster

To be fair to Ms Cooper, she never promised to ‘stop the boats’. She was going to ‘smash the gangs’.

No, that hasn’t happened either though. 🤷‍♀️

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Fri 05-Sept-25 21:18:00

I thought it was ‘Smash the Economy’ and ‘Grow the Gangs’ 🤷‍♀️
They were doing well too … 😂

Casdon Fri 05-Sept-25 21:21:36

To be even fairer to Yvette Cooper she has put a lot of the pieces of the very complex jigsaw of reducing illegal migration in place, she inherited a holy mess. I think the glib ‘she hasn’t done x y and z’ is unjust.

Primrose53 Fri 05-Sept-25 21:27:06

Mind you YC does love the Union Jack and England flags. Her summerhouse is positively festooned with them she says! Then and UJ bunting apparently.

Well I'm just waiting for the grown ups so many people kept telling us were now in charge when Labour won. I've yet to see any give me any hope in their ability.

nanna8 Sat 06-Sept-25 01:02:06

David Lammy ? Really ? Seriously ?

Abnuyc123 Sat 06-Sept-25 01:12:12

I also used to really like David Lammy but despite all he’s done for the post office workers, I can forgive his comments about women. I believe many women will feel the same.

Abnuyc123 Sat 06-Sept-25 01:12:47

*can’t forgive.

friendlygingercat Sat 06-Sept-25 02:21:23

Arranging the deckchairs .....

Calendargirl Sat 06-Sept-25 06:57:17

Labour need to show us a bit more of what they are doing to address these issues.

Such as seeing some of the deported migrants getting on planes and actually being deported.

Have any of them gone anywhere yet though?

Reeves may very well go after her Autumn budget. She's walking a tight line.

ronib Sat 06-Sept-25 07:27:04

Who could replace Reeves?

Grantanow Sat 06-Sept-25 09:31:46

I wonder if the reshuffle would have happened if Rayner had stayed put.

Very good 😂😂😂😂😂

I am relieved that Lammy no longer represents the Uk abroad. It’s such a comprehensive reshuffle that it couldn’t have been done in a few days.

I agree. I had high hopes for him but if he can't understand basic human biology how can he be expected to understand more complex matters?

David Lammy ? Really ? Seriously ?

Absolutely!
AR might need advice on complex housing issues, but this Right Honourable bloke needs serious help on general knowledge, biology in particular.

"It's probably the case that trans women don't have ovaries but a cervix, I understand, is something you can have following various procedures and hormone treatments".

So he’s now Lord Chancellor.😄

It definitely wasn’t a knee jerk reshuffle, it was far too comprehensive for that to have been the case, he must have been planning it for months, and he brought it forward to account for Angela Rayner’s departure at the same time.

ronib Sat 06-Sept-25 10:47:53

Agreed Casdon.
I am curious to see if the Uk still recognises Hamas in Gaza after the reshuffle?
