Cabinet Reshuffle

I'm pleased that a reshuffle is happening but it should never have had to take this last week's events and this morning's resignation to trigger it. Starmer would have gained so much more respect/kudos if he had had the balls to sort the mess on his own doing.

Interesting times.

Certainly interesting times. There were rumours of a reshuffle taking place this autumn, so I’d guess it had been already been mooted with some of the cabinet members concerned. I’m surprised in a way that Starmer replaced the Deputy PM role, not all governments have them - but as the world is so volatile at the moment it must free him up to do more of the world stage negotiations.

As the rôle of Deputy PM does not have a salary, it seems it's combined with a Ministerial job to give the holder additional salary. Secretary of State for Housing and Justice Secretary both carry a salary of C£159,000 pa which I inclusive of MP salary.

I feel a bit Hmm about Yvette Cooper as foreign secretary - thought she was disappointing as Home Secretary.

David Lammy seems a good choice as Deputy.

I just wondered why he needed to have a Deputy PM, rather than ministers with all the separate portfolios, although in recent years it has become the norm - maybe because of the situation in the rest of the world?

They did it right Spinnaker (do you sail?). They had the investigation, AR resigned, Keir Starmer accepted the resignation in a very thoughtful letter. When the current right-wing parties can do the same people can legitimately complain.

Wasn't an awful lot of the "unsuitable for high office" just snobbery? Most of the present Cabinet have working class backgrounds. Even Keir Starmer's wouldn't get much more than "lower middle class" from most people. Angela Rayner's start in life makes me want to praise where she got to and feel ashamed of the snobbery that can only focus on her accent and her clothes.

Labour will miss her. Housing, Communities and Local Government will miss her. People who should be proud of what she achieved should miss her. Although I don't always agree with Labour, I will miss her as a beacon of hope to those with such a difficult start in life.

I thought there had been talk of a reshuffle for a while. But I have been avoiding the news so am happy to be corrected.

At one time it was common for Prime Ministers to pass questions, especially technical or complex ones, to the Minister in charge of that area at PMQs. I wish they would go back to that.

I suppose everyone needs to know who is deputy Casdon, just in case ...

I might be wrong PoliticsNerd, but I don’t think that being Deputy PM means that they necessarily act into the PM role automatically - if for example Starmer became ill and needed a formal stand in, he could nominate whoever in the Cabinet he wanted to be the acting PM.

I think they were talking about the autumn Maybee.

I can never forgive David Lammy for his comments regarding women and cervix’s, amongst other things.

A little aside from the naming of ministers and reshuffle, I watched several minutes of Beth Rigby and Sophie Ridge discussing this outside no 10. What manner of serious journalist announces an idea, qualifying it by saying "I'm not going to lie to you".? What ever prompts a seemingly responsible TV political journalist to make this utterly ridiculous comment!
I really cannot bear the constant use of this phrase but I don't expect it to be used by intelligent commentators

Judging by the scale of the changes this reshuffle has been long in the making. I think Pat McFadden will be effective in his new super minister role, he’s a worker, and very experienced. Not an easy brief though.

I like Darren Jones, and think he's one to watch. He's very good on things like Question Time - polite and measured in his responses and seems to have a sense of humour.

I used to really rate David Lammy, but his comments on women have put me off, too. Having said that, very few politicians of any stripe were sensible about so-called 'gender' when Stonewall held sway.

I would dearly like to see Andy Burnham as PM, but I can't see that happening for some time yet, and I know many of the people of Manchester would be reluctant to let him go.

I don't know enough about Shabana Mahmood to comment on her appointment. I wondered if Lisa Nandy would get something more high profile. Her star seems to be fading.

Apparently there will be more changes at junior minister level tomorrow, it’s a big reshuffle.

Goodness. I've watched a couple of analyses but it's only just sinking in with most. This seems to have been taken as an opportunity do a much larger reshuffle than it was going to be. That can be good. Challenges can make people think in different ways.

That can't be the same Darren Jones I've seen. Like Doodledog, I have thought for some time he was one to watch.

I don't think Andy Burnham is likely to even go for parliament again. I hope he doesn't. I'm very much in favour of the devolution and was sorry Andy Street lost his seat. It sounded as if Rory Stuart was thinking about running in his area. We need capable Mayors.

But this is a very wide ranging Cabinet reshuffle. Must have taken quite some time to plan?
Am disappointed that Ed Milliband and Rachel Reeves retained their positions.

Unfortunately that comment ( which he did rectify afterwards) seems to be the only thing that people remember ( selective memory perhaps ). He worked tirelessly on the committees about the postmasters I believe. But no one remembers that do they .
