At a conference as ill attended as Trump's Rallies, yes, that is what she sang. And these are the people who tell is it's "just patriotism" when their followers start another riot or treat our flag with about as much deference as an empty beer can kicked down the street.

We know the Reform Conference is just designed to distract, after all they dont have any policies but they are the only "party" whose Conference has a pyrotechnics budgetconfused -but it was awful on so many levels.

Just listened.
It sounded like King and him to me, although the last note was a bit strained.

Allira Mon 08-Sept-25 12:56:59

But singing in front if an audience? Really must try harder, Andrea!
Disregard that, it was King and him.

The woman is deluded and best ignored...

Well, she has a whole thread dedicated to her.

If people didn't know who she was before, they do now 😁

Oh dear, PoliticsNerd, calm down dear
1) She sang “God Save the King
and 2) not particularly well.

Why shouldn’t she sing that ? Just wondering.

Because the Queen is dead?

My goodness! Can’t. Believe this.

It takes years for news to reach Australia…

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

nanna8 Mon 08-Sept-25 13:20:45

No - we just don’t really care is all. Something about storms and teacups.

nanna8 Mon 08-Sept-25 13:21:28

That being the royal we of course 🙃

PoliticsNerd Mon 08-Sept-25 13:24:04

Err. I don't think so Allira. She's just a woman who sang "Queen" at the beginning of the National Anthem instead of King.

Regress may be in trouble if people watched the whole charade though. After all, if you can't organise a conference (shades of poor Theresa May's with bits falling off the wall) how can you organise a country?

Babs03 Mon 08-Sept-25 13:24:10

I don’t know who this woman is, nor do I care, and am pretty sure the King doesn’t care either.

Oreo Mon 08-Sept-25 13:31:55

I don’t think anyone is fussed about this PoliticsNerd and as for conferences and things going wrong, I expect it happens all the time.

Rosie51 Mon 08-Sept-25 13:38:24

So it's not definite she sang 'Queen' instead of 'King' then, just a matter of opinion, and hearing abilities do vary. As Allira has noted, there's now a whole thread about someone most of us didn't know (or possibly care) about before. grin

Jenkyns sang:

God save our gracious Queen,
Long live our noble Queen,
God save the [slight hesitation] King.
Send him victorious …

She looked at Farage in alarm. He reached out a hand and laughed. Pochin looked like she was trying not laugh.

It was an easy to make mistake that Jenkyns soon corrected.

Queen Elizabeth reigned for so long, the words seem to be hard-wired into our memories. I see sports teams singing the National Anthem at major events. Some of the players are still singing to the Queen.

I am not a royalist and don’t follow what the family are up to but I do know that King Charles acceded to the throne three years ago today, yet it was only a few weeks ago that I first saw a stamp with the King’s head on it. Around the same time, in the local charity shop, the woman on the till asked me what I thought of the new banknotes. She had a fake note taped to the counter. Didn’t the King look young? she said. I rarely use cash. That was the first time I’d seen a new (albeit fake) note.

I can’t even remember when I last sang the anthem but I think I might also slip back into the old words.

In fact, the last note sounded like Kong!
King Kong?

I couldn't see a Union flag behind her 🤔

I'll ask DH.
His hearing invariably varies from mine.

I still miss the Queen.

Ian Birrell , writing in the I paper, was there in Birmingham, and found a party trying to show it was ready for government.

"Yet despite meeting decent, ordinary people there, and some flatly absurd moments, for Ian there were alarming overtones too. The hardening tenor of Reform's pronouncements, he writes, should be a warning:

"Reform’s strategy is inspired by Trump and many members wallow in nostalgia for a past – and probably mythical – golden age. Yet while ostensibly rooted in conservatism and patriotism, this is in reality a potentially incendiary political force whose leaders are flirting with the far-right, stirring up a sense of national emergency and shifting alarmingly closer to the more extreme forms of populism and ethno-nationalism seen elsewhere in Europe."

It is less than 100 years ago that Hitler came to power and look where that led. We urgently need to start learning from history.

Calendargirl Mon 08-Sept-25 17:31:49

Well, at least she sang ‘up’, not like some gatherings where the participants hardly open their mouths and look embarrassed to be doing so.

I’m sure she realised she’d gone wrong, but she soldiered on.

I’m not her greatest fan, but good on her for leading the singing, someone has to.

eazybee Mon 08-Sept-25 17:55:55

Better than singing Keep the Red Flag Flying.

Eloethan Mon 08-Sept-25 19:35:11

"she was patriotic" for singing the National Anthem. That's a fairly feeble and pointless demonstration of patriotism, in my opinion.

Grantanow Wed 10-Sept-25 08:44:17

Jenkins is a back number.

Shelflife Wed 10-Sept-25 12:30:18

Shocking mistake! I recognise how easy it is to make that mistake. However in this case there is no excuse - she should know better !

Maremia Wed 10-Sept-25 15:32:02

Oh dear oh dear. Reform has dropped a few points after the Conference. Wonder what has put off some of those voters?

Oh dear oh dear. Reform has dropped a few points after the Conference. Wonder what has put off some of those voters?

Perhaps some of them watched the conference and thought to themselves ‘could I actually countenance this shower of sh** running my country?’
