The Post Office Scandal - Could it Get Any Worse?

You might think not but it just has.

The Post Office Minister, Gareth Thomas, was removed from his post by Keir Starmer in the recent re-shuffle.

Gareth Thomas has built up a rapport with sub-postmasters and sub-postmistresses and was making some progress. Now he has gone, there is as yet no replacement and any replacement will need to catch up to speed with what has been happening pdq.

It is time this scandal was sorted out properly without delay but another delay seems inevitable now.

What is Starmer thinking?

Below is a BBC interview with Betty Brown, age 92, the oldest victim of the Post Office scandal:

I can't find out who's replaced him

Redcar Wed 10-Sept-25 14:57:13

I don’t think he’s been replaced.

aggie Wed 10-Sept-25 14:57:47

Awful debacle the whole mess

Sarnia Wed 10-Sept-25 15:46:51

Starmer was so critical of the Tories and rightly so when they were dragging their heels. Now they are in power, suddenly they are treating the PO workers just the same. Ditto for the Waspi women.

I can't remember disliking a Government more than this one.

Redcar

I don’t think he’s been replaced.

No, no-one as yet.

What is Starmer thinking?
You'd think these poor, maligned people who ran our post offices couldn't be treated any worse but this is yet another blow, another set-back in their fight for justice.

If the Post Office Minister, Gareth Thomas was making progress, would that have cost the government money for payouts.
If they put off compensation payouts for long enough, some will have died.

Allira Wed 10-Sept-25 16:28:28

The cynic one wondered the same Mollygo

It really is quite wicked.

Allira Wed 10-Sept-25 16:28:50

The cynic in me

I watched that interview live this morning. Betty Brown aged 92 is thought to be the oldest surviving post office victim. She’s very articulate and extremely angry and who could blame her. She and her late husband are estimated to have lost £50k through no fault of their own. She’s livid that Gareth Thomas is no longer fighting their case.

The cynic in me

Well it was the cynic in me too.

Ilovecheese Wed 10-Sept-25 16:58:56

I should think it just wouldn't occur to Starmer to consider those people.

Vetrep Wed 10-Sept-25 17:04:01

I watched Betty’s interview and was so impressed. Of course the removal of Gareth is deliberate- no one to fight for these poor people = Starmer can ignore. What angers me is that we can send billions abroad and yet again cannot look after our own properly. I know the previous government failed the too but this Labour shower are an utter disgrace after being so critical of the conservatives.

Wasn’t she wonderful 👏👏👏👏👏👏

Allira Wed 10-Sept-25 18:03:35

Yes, she deserves an MBE as well as the money she and her husband lost plus compensation on top!

The handling of this has been disgraceful.

Mt61 Wed 10-Sept-25 18:20:44

I remember my now deceased mil had a friend who had a post office. I remember her saying poor, such & such, I wouldn’t have had them down as a thief! Was only half listening at the time. But years later this whole sorry mess happened to come out. I now think, they were possibly wrongly accused.

Eloethan Thu 11-Sept-25 00:49:26

This has been going on for years, with people's lives ruined. It's disgusting.

windmill1 Thu 11-Sept-25 01:57:14

The Post Office Scandal is going the same way as the treatment of WASPI Women: if it drags on and on and on for long enough then more and more of those involved will simply die of old age.

The usual strategy of The Powers That Be.

Oreo Thu 11-Sept-25 09:10:27

It’s shocking, no other word for it.Why on earth replace Gareth Thomas? The only excuse would have been if he hadn’t made any progress but that doesn’t seem to have been the case.

WelshPoppy Thu 11-Sept-25 14:44:53

Starmer and thinking don't belong in the same sentence

Berd Thu 11-Sept-25 14:44:56

I was so impressed by Betty too. I think this issue needs to be kept in the forefront of the public eye or it will just be allowed to disappear. I wouldn’t for one minute belittle the importance of what’s going on in Gaza, but shouldn’t we be shouting just as loudly about the disgusting state of affairs with the Post Office scandal?

Time for another TV drama - ‘The Post Office, what happened next’ I think. Scandalous.

I think it might have been because he listened and empathise and was trying to make progress.

We can't have that, can we. These people are after compensation! There's a black hole in the Government finances.

Allira Thu 11-Sept-25 15:02:59

Good idea Berd

FranP Thu 11-Sept-25 15:08:57

Sorry, he may have built up a report, but still dragging heels

4allweknow Thu 11-Sept-25 15:20:45

Watched Betty on Wednesday. So articulate, focused and, honest. Absolute disgrace how they are being treated. If they lost £50k way back they should have that awarded with interest. Never mind those who were imprisoned, wrongly, just no words.
