Peter Mandelson - Epstein . Should Starmer sack him?

In 2008, Epstein pleaded guilty to soliciting sec from girls as yiung as 14. He was sentenced to 18 months in prison
Mandelson continued his friendship/business dealings with Epstein. The Telegraph reports when business secretary, Mandelson brokered a deal with Epstein after the conviction for child sex offences.
I heard PM today apologising, wishing he’d never met Epstein. He went on to apologise to the victims, he hadn’t noticed abuse of girls possibly because he’s gay and was there with his partner.
My view? How was he appointed? I knew about his links with Epstein which were always going to return to haunt him

Yes perhaps he meant that. Who knows.

Iam64 Thu 11-Sept-25 14:11:05

Who knows what he meant. One thing that occurred to me was how right he was if he meant rarely were adult men prosecuted for ‘consensual ‘ sex with 14 year olds

I’m curious to know what he meant when he wrote it wouldn’t happen in Britain. Does he mean Epstein would have got away with it here. If so, what a damning indictment of this country.

In your dreams !uckygirl.
One of the most shocking thing he said recently is that as a gay man he didn’t realise what was happening.
Investigative journalists will be digging. I can’t see how anyone with such useless radar for abuse hasn’t missed it elsewhere

I can see that Starmer might have thought he would appeal to Trump, but really anyone who might appeal to Trump is not someone I would want to represent me or my country.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Thu 11-Sept-25 14:01:16

Mandelson’s goose is well and truly cooked now.
Good riddance to bad rubbish.

Luckygirl3 Thu 11-Sept-25 13:58:22

I do hope this is the last we hear of this awful man and he is finally allowed to sink without trace.

Iam64 Thu 11-Sept-25 13:56:05

BabsO3 I suspect you’re not far from the truth. With Trump, a Machiavellian person, skilled manipulator and one who had moved in the Epstein sewer like Trump and other powerful men might have been considered. Pity the perceived risks weren’t considered to outweigh any positives.

I imagine Starmer brought Mandelson back because he was sleazy enough to appeal to Trump on whom the connection with old pal Epstein would work like an old boys club tie.
It was a reckless gamble that has cost Starmer dear.

Yep. Highly likely. You have to wonder just how widespread among the elites of both the US and the UK was Epstein's toxicity.

Mandelson was a skilled fixer for the wealthy elite. (MaizieD)

If that's how Trump saw him that would seem seem to add to those qualities I described as the ones I saw him as having.

Now he can retire into the company of all his other dodgy friends and spend more time with his family!

But what a flagrant example of Keir Stamer's cloth-eared incompetence that he was even considered for the post let alone given it.. Or perhaps Mandelson had something on Starmer, so that he had to make the offer.

Who are all his other dodgy friends ?

It is bothering me a lot that Sir Kier Starmer didnt have the same thoughts as just about every poster on here.

He didn’t jump when media said ‘jump’

Wasnt just media!

Who else in the Country had "confidence" in him, as Sir Kier put it yesterday, apart from Sir Kier?

Tony Blair 🤷‍♀️

Crumbs. You are right. TB did as well.

Casdon Thu 11-Sept-25 12:41:27

I wonder if he was originally chosen because he was perceived to ba able to handle Trump, and that overrode concerns about his personal Epstein involvement. It’s an extremely difficult post to fill in the current USA political environment,

Any bets on who will be the next Ambassador?

I should add, I could see the reasons Mandelson was appointed. He seems to have made a reasonable start. But I believe him staying is untenable

I agree. It was possible to see why he was appointed. We need a very skilled Ambassador and he was that.

He wasn't a skilled ambassador. He wasn't even a diplomat. We have plenty of them who do quietly unsung jobs in foreign countries.

Mandelson was a skilled fixer for the wealthy elite.

Mollygo Thu 11-Sept-25 12:15:22

I’m relieved he’s been sacked. It takes away the concern that KS wouldn’t do it in case of revelations.

A gay, Jewish guy befriends another man, and supports him, believing he is innocent. During this time he does an excellent job in difficult circumstances.

He's sacked because more information comes to hand.

That's it.

Yes

Galaxy Thu 11-Sept-25 12:12:18

It was clear he had dealings with epstein after his conviction that was in the last Guardian expose. I have no idea what his being jewish or gay has to do with anything.

Mandelson has never been far away from scandal.

Galaxy Thu 11-Sept-25 11:57:40

Yes the skill of being sacked three times in four decades. A level of genius we can only aspire to.

Peter Mandelson has managed to bounce back from scandal at least twice as far as I can recall; several highly questionable financial matters have seen him resign, or be remived from a position close to the government of the day. Will he do it again?
