Isn’t it ironic that someone who made statements that some gun deaths are inevitable and justifiable to protect 2nd Amendment rights. - was shot by someone whose “rights” he was protecting.
Before anyone jumps on me - of course no one should be murdered for their views.

Australian gun crime reduced dramatically after they bought in strict restrictions over gun ownership. You only need to have a gun if most other people have guns!

The gun laws were made more stringent across the whole country after the terrible Port Arthur massacre.

Because of the likelihood of more bad guys in a much bigger area is what I’m thinking? 🤷‍♀️
Statistically more chance (much higher) of one roaming in the outback.
I’d not like to take my chances anyway out there.
Each to their own though.

Plus Canada is freezing further north.
Maybe less ‘wanderers’ who knows?

Statistically more chance (much higher) of one roaming in the outback. I've spent time in the outback. I still don't agree, although yes, there could be fugitives on the run living amongst the community in remote areas.

How do Canadians manage though if your argument stacks up FriedGreenTomatoes2? They have strict gun ownership laws, people live more remotely than they do in the USA, but they don’t have anything like the same issues?

Less people??

You're talking about people living remotely, which means fewer people living in a particular area, whether the USA, Canada, Australia, wherever.

The same in Australia.

Australian farmers have guns but they are kept in locked gun cabinets.

I had never heard of this guy til it came on Sky News last night.

Anybody who has been following the growth in right-wing ideology in the US will have heard of him and Turning Point.

Casdon Thu 11-Sept-25 21:35:19

There is no comparison between the homicde rate in the UK and USA. Here are the statistics.

It’s the choice of America, I doubt they will change

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Thu 11-Sept-25 21:29:53

True but being illegal isn’t stopping knife crime. It’s gotten worse and will continue.

foxie48 Thu 11-Sept-25 21:20:42

Difference is though it's illegal to carry a knife in public in the UK, it's not illegal to carry a gun in the US.

I get your point foxie48.its said of London that many frightened schoolboys now carry a knife because so many other boys have knives in their possession.

Yes that’s true. Be armed or be in danger from those who are. What a state of affairs.

Maybe the ice & snow keeps the bad guys home more Norah.
😁

I don’t know.
I’m just posting my viewpoint.

As they say “you do you”.

We're law abiding people. I'm pleased to live where people don't have guns for no reason. We've had Holiday homes in the USA, always wondered where a gun would shoot, even in a shop.

Canadians are nicer. What can I say? grin

There are still millions of lovely Americans who would invite you to dinner and give you the shirt off their back vs shoot you. But I really think they are just a nicer population.

Basically, USA is a dangerous place to live precisely because the right to hold a gun has been upheld for centuries. They are the masters of their own destruction in that respect.

Canadians don't have same gun laws as USA.

Canadians have many vast remote areas.

Canadian per capita murder rate is far lower.

"The USA has a significantly higher per capita murder rate than Canada. For example, in 2022, the U.S. homicide rate was 6.38 per 100,000 residents, while Canada's was 2.27 per 100,000 residents."

America is not a country - it is a whole continent!

USA is a country!

Geography people!

Does it matter in the scheme of things? Over here the country is called America, not just USA. Same as we’re called Great Britain, United Kingdom etc.

More nut jobs per %age of the population Casdon = more likelihood of one in your rural vicinity perhaps?

Well, murder rates are lower in rural communities than urban areas, probably because everybody knows who the nut jobs in the community are, so no.

Casdon Thu 11-Sept-25 20:44:13

Canada = 41 million people
USA = 340 million people

I just don’t get your point. Are you saying that Canada is safer because it ‘only’ has a population of 40 million? Why would a rural dweller in USA need a gun more than one in Canada, other than the fact that guns are readily accessible in USA but not in Canada?

Whatever the politics it is outrageous this young man has been shot and killed and his poor wife and little children are in my thoughts. America is a country I’ve never been to and never want to either. It seems a land of extremes.
