Isn’t it ironic that someone who made statements that some gun deaths are inevitable and justifiable to protect 2nd Amendment rights. - was shot by someone whose “rights” he was protecting.
Before anyone jumps on me - of course no one should be murdered for their views.

Erika Kirk has a Catholic upbringing which influenced her husband in certain beliefs. So the Evangelicals in America following Kirk may not be Protestant based I imagine so a different emphasis from the German Christians in the 1930s?

Hitler also had a Catholic upbringing.

Give them time. A lot seem to have found god at the rally.

What Rally ?

They don't need a civil war. They are winning.

😡 I think that it also maybe true in this country.

Perhaps it is something that has to somehow be endured and then got out of the system when people come to their senses.

The trouble is the damage to lives and the country it does meanwhile.

I'n not sure that we have enough practising 'christians' of any denomination, or of fighting age, in the UK to initiate or actively engage in a civil war.

vintage1950 I heard Trump finding it difficult to reconcile orthodox Christian forgiveness with a natural response of vengeance. Erika didn’t have that problem and the crowd supported her too. It will be interesting to see if Erika will continue a conversation with Trump and win him round.

vintage1950 Mon 22-Sept-25 11:03:13

And I think Charlie Kirk's widow said that she forgives her husband's killer.

vintage1950 Mon 22-Sept-25 10:58:31

Ronib, I was disturbed that the crowd appeared to agree with him about hating one's enemies. Wasn't Charlie Kirk a Christian?

Casdon nevertheless as the new CEO of Turning Point, I doubt there will be much holding back. We could well be looking at a female President 15 years from now. Such fire, fury and momentum.

Whitewavemark2 Mon 22-Sept-25 10:36:11

The Christian nationalists are very similar in rhetoric and ideology to the German Christian church in the 1930s.

Casdon Mon 22-Sept-25 10:23:11

I think that’s unlikely in the near future ronib. She is newly widowed, with two very young children, and will want and need to prioritise her private life.

ronib Mon 22-Sept-25 09:49:28

Kirk was political and his widow will become even more so.

ronib Mon 22-Sept-25 09:48:25

The Washington Post? Hardly surprising then.

foxie48 Mon 22-Sept-25 09:35:11

Well if Trump was honest it was a rare occasion! I think this service was highly political and the POTUS has the responsibility to set an example not use the death of Kirk as a rallying call. I think his behaviour was disgusting and not worthy of a leader. the Washington Post describes some of the speeches as invoking religious warfare, just disgraceful.

ronib Mon 22-Sept-25 09:28:50

In what way were you disturbed?

vintage1950 Mon 22-Sept-25 09:10:50

Yes, ronib, he did indeed show us what he really feels. The response of the crowd, as I heard it on radio, was very disturbing.

ronib Mon 22-Sept-25 08:26:43

Donald Trump was struggling to square up with opposing philosophies - Christian forgiveness versus vengeance. A very human response. At least Trump was honest.

GrannyGravy13 Mon 22-Sept-25 08:24:55

Reminds me of the 2024 film Civil War with Kirsten Dunst were separate states/factions in the USA are fighting the Government.

I remember watching this last year and thinking it was so far fetched, but…

I've just snippets of the speeches at yesterday's service for Charlie Kirk. I found what I heard deeply disturbing. Trump said unlike Kirk he "hates" his enemies. I honestly believe he's trying to stoke a civil war in the US, if he's not he's totally irresponsible and reprehensible. Actually I think he's probably all three.

Wow, the president of the United States posting on Truth Social instead of to Pam Bondi! He's really not safe to be left alone is he? He's a real liability.

Here is an article about it.
