“Hi everyone, just be reading the news about the tragic shooting of Charlie Kirk, who was shot and sadly passed away at the young age of 31. I am not really interested in politics, but I’m shocked by this incident. My heart goes out to his family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time. It’s a reminder of how precious and fragile life is.”
His poor wife and young children 😢

Strangely enough people can talk about what they like, obviously if you aren't interested there are other threads.

Aveline Fri 12-Sept-25 19:16:15

I agree. My point was to wonder at our massive coverage of this unfortunate event while thousands are dying elsewhere.

Youngnanny Fri 12-Sept-25 19:24:19

**Aveline yes I agree, watching the news is horrible, my heart goes out to Gaza 💔

Too much coverage on someone who didn't seem to do much except get into on-line and public spats with people he didn't seem to like.

I'm sorry he was shot, but people are dying in Gaza, Kiev and elsewhere and all I see on the news is this guy.

What's going on? I find it very odd.

He did rather more than that keepingquiet. He helped run part of Trumps campaign for the last election, was great friends with Don Junior and Vance and was talked of as a possible future President.

That doesn’t mean he deserved to be murdered.

Did I say it did?

I was just updating the impression that he was "someone who didn't seem to do much except get into on-line and public spats with people he didn't seem to like."

No-one deserv4s to be murdered.

However, if someone believes in the right for everyone to bear arms in their country, it is not surprising is killed by that method.
It was a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Thanks for all your comments, obviously there’s a lot going on in the world, and it’s truly heartbreaking 💔 to watch the news. No one deserves to be shot or murdered, whatever circumstances. And with social media people are able to view this violence, personally it’s not something I would do.
Keep your love ones close ❤️

Millions of US citizens agree with the right to bear arms, it’s in their Constitution. It doesn’t mean that they expect to be murdered in the street tho they sometimes are, but it means to them, that they carry a gun to defend themselves.
It’s not my own view but it’s theirs.
Until it’s removed from their Constitution it won’t change.
What could change is only allowing people to have a hand gun, no more high powered rifles unless you’re a hunter or a farmer .

I'd never heard of this man until now.

LizzieDrip Fri 12-Sept-25 22:48:27

yes we all need to have empathy despite our political views

I agree Youngnanny.

However, not sure Charlie Kirk would agree. This is what he said about empathy:

“I can't stand the word empathy, actually. I think empathy is a made-up, new age term — it does a lot of damage."

What a nice man!!!

Galaxy Fri 12-Sept-25 22:57:22

Er I think the term be kind is deeply unpleasant, and is generally used as a form of 'do as I say', I think the phrase has caused a lot of damage. I don't really care what people think of me with regard to my view on that.

I'm pretty well up on American politics, and especially during Trump's campaign and ever since but I never recall seeing this guy or hearing his name mentioned.

Apparently he started out by making an on-line presence for himself when he was fifteen and made a lot of money, but other than that I still don't know what he actually did.

Hence my mystification about all the publicity he has received since this tragic shooting- just who is he and why do people think his death is so significant?

I'm not buying it, sorry.

Galaxy Fri 12-Sept-25 23:03:25

I don't think we are the age range he is popular with.

I agree. The young people seemed to be embroiled in a very dangerous war born of, and continually fed by, the media.

Now we are hearing the voices of our youth and they are very unpleasant ones indeed. At least, the media seem to love them because they are after all, their little darlings...

Were you really not aware of Turning Point USA and the influence it is having in colleges?

Galaxy I understand where you are coming from. I have heard many people use that saying and they are anything but!" However, IMO normal people on the left or the right do not go and murder other people because of their view. They just don't agree with them. What is happening that manipulates people on both sides to commit such acts?

A good question, and my answer would be Social Media combined with shaky mental health.

I don't recall anyone saying that on either of the Kirk threads. So where has it come from?

I certainly don't equate people saying 'be kind' (which I think is an empty and meaningless phrase) with them asking others to be emphatic.

Galaxy Sat 13-Sept-25 11:07:34

I think I understand where he is coming from with regard to the empathy discussion, and I linked it to the be kind issue. Empathy like be kind can be used to control. So in terms of the quotes on empathy I neither agree or disagree with it, and certainly am not particularly upset about it.

Whitewavemark2 Sat 13-Sept-25 11:12:10

Empathy is an innate emotion.
