Would you turn your child in if they face the death penalty

I have just been reading a discussion on mumsnet about this and there are some strong opinions.
This discussion is in connection to the Charlie Kirk murder. I would not, I don't believe in state sanctioned murder, I could not send him to his death, and watch as they allow relatives to do in the states that have capital punishment on America, Utah does. Also emotion comes into it, it is my child.

Of course I would inform. If my child is an adult they have to take the resonsibility for their actions on their own shoulders and innocent people need protecting.

The issue here seems to be that people are inoking the death death penalty before this young man has even gone to trial. It makes me worried for the jury system.

Thank goodness we got rid of the medieval death penalty; the one the victim and his followers seemed to admire so much.

America is slowly killing itself and it is very painful to watch.

Babs03, Myra Handley and Ian Brady's serial murders came to an end when when Myra Hindley's brother in law reported them to the police, after they tried to involve him.

What if you knew your child was a really nasty piece of work - would it affect your decision?

butterandjam Fri 12-Sept-25 22:49:12

If I knew they had just shot a stranger, I'd have to turn them in to be sure they wouldn't kill more people.

Babs03 Fri 12-Sept-25 22:14:26

I suppose it does depend upon the crime, if it was a crime of passion or in self defence against an abusive partner etc., that would be one thing but if it was serial murders, or the murder of a child, that is very much another thing.
Myra Hindley and Ian Brady must have had parents.

valdavi Fri 12-Sept-25 22:07:01

No, I could never do that to my child.
If they were a serial killer or rapist, I would have to do something to stop them, but I couldn't tiurn them over to the State for a judicial execution.

You should but you’d have to be very strong minded to do it. Perhaps the father is religious and thinks it’s his moral duty idk. I did read, that he persuaded the son to turn himself in. Other reports say he shopped him. Like others I abhor the death penalty. It doesn’t stop murderers or there would be less of them. In Utah there are more.

Kandinsky

Yes I would.
He’d get caught eventually anyway.

Yes, this.
Plus it is the right thing to do.
My kids and DH always know that if they do wrong, they cannot hide behind me.

I find the idea of state execution horrific, to me it is cold blooded murder.

Yes.

BlueBelle Fri 12-Sept-25 20:51:27

I don’t support death penalty so no I wouldn’t

theworriedwell Fri 12-Sept-25 19:33:19

Babs03

Both worried well.

Horrific to think of but hopefully our children wouldn't do it and if we are both in the UK it wouldn't be something we'd actually have to consider.

yes it is, ritualistic, automated, uncivilised

How would you describe the murder of the innocent?

Lathyrus3 Fri 12-Sept-25 19:22:18

Those who say no and never.

Would there be a limit to how many people should die so that your child could go on living?

Would there com a point when you said no more and what would that be?

Grandmaofone Fri 12-Sept-25 19:21:19

I don't agree with the death penalty however if your child has say committed a school shooting, they will more than likely commit further acts of violence, so whoever sheltered them would be partly responsible for further deaths

do school shooters walk out of there alive though?

Oreo Fri 12-Sept-25 19:20:43

It all depends on how and why your own AC has killed doesn’t it?Generally speaking tho, yes I would urge him to turn himself in and if he refused then I’d do it.
In a case like the sniper shooting of Kirk then I would have little hesitation in turning him in. A cold bloodied shooting like that is a different matter to a heat of the moment tussle that had lethal consequences.

I know he has not been tried yet, but will he get a fair trial? Trump has said he wants the death penalty, he should have kept quiet as the position he is in could influence some people.
I could never turn my adult child in.

Kandinsky Fri 12-Sept-25 18:52:07

Yes I would.
He’d get caught eventually anyway.

keepingquiet Fri 12-Sept-25 18:37:24

Why are people assuming he will get the death penalty?
He hasn't been found guilty yet, but everyone here seems to assume he is both guilty and yes, he will be executed.
What is happening to the world?
Also the father knows why he handed him him, not for us to speculate if we would or not.
Recently after the Catholic school shooting, eveyone was claiming the mother knew and didn't hand him in!
What are parents to do in order to please the braying public?

Oh! What they think is the right thing and for the right reasons.

Just be glad it isn't you.

Babs03 Fri 12-Sept-25 18:31:20

Both worried well.

Mollygo Fri 12-Sept-25 18:21:00

Initial reaction is No.
But how can I actually know that unless I’m faced with that situation?
Fear of what else my child might do could well override my urge to protect my child.

theworriedwell Fri 12-Sept-25 18:13:10

Babs03

Goodness knows worried well, I can’t even begin to think how it would happen.

Can't imagine them killing or turning them in?

winterwhite Fri 12-Sept-25 18:10:00

It isn't a likely contingency for any of us but if it arises it won't find us unprepared with our answers. No.

AskAlice Fri 12-Sept-25 18:04:35

I think I agree with Lathyrus3, particularly her words about "wanting to kill", but God willing I hope I never have to face that choice.
