I just think religion has some much to answer for, & not in a good way.

Starmer has formally announced that the U.K. recognises the State of Palestine.

Well glad to know you weren’t offended.
Somebody else must have been though.
Goodness am sure I have posted more robust comments.
Anyway onward and upward.

ronib Sun 21-Sept-25 19:20:03

Actually I thought you were on the money … Babs03

Babs03 Sun 21-Sept-25 19:18:51

Oh dear have been deleted. Was only joking ronib, about your husband, thought it was a fairly mild joke.
Apologies if it was taken the wrong way.

Maremia Sun 21-Sept-25 18:42:41

Isn't that how it has been, so nothing new. Still worrying, but not anything to do with the 'recognition'.

ronib Sun 21-Sept-25 18:34:14

Or maybe Hamas can get weapons in through Egypt and into the tunnels in Gaza, as provided by Iran? Easy?

People have been trying to support the Palestinians for ages, have they not, sending food and medical supplies. Think the problem has been that this international support has not been allowed to get in.
Sending money is not a problem, it's already a practice.
Selling munitions and weapons to either side, now that's the real issue.

DH points out that the way has been cleared for the UK to lend money to the Palestinians and to sell them weapons.
Of course, why didn’t I think of that?

Thought how it will get into Gaza? Who holds the keys?

Actually I don’t know why I’m even given consideration to thisπŸ˜„πŸ˜„

ronib Sun 21-Sept-25 18:04:09

We’ll know soon enough? I hope my DH is wrong.

Maremia Sun 21-Sept-25 18:02:07

Do you think that will be likely? The selling weapons bit.

Well that is very new foxie. Democrats don't have the power just now, but yes, a big shift.

Smileless2012 Sun 21-Sept-25 17:38:36

Yes he is Babs; trouble is he's the stuff of nightmares for the rest of us.

Maremia Sun 21-Sept-25 17:38:14

Hope it worked out for them, petra,

^I think that Trump will have to soon sit up and take notice^ I like to think so Babs but as long as there's a possibility of making money, I'm not holding my breath.

Well there is that.
No matter how bad other presidents of the US have been I know that none would have allowed this to continue.
Netanyahu must be as thrilled as Putin that Trump is president, he is every megalomaniac’s dream come true.

Of course it won’t do anything to change what is happening in Gaza, but together with other countries that were once allies doing this it does increase Israel’s isolation in the world and confirm its reputation as a pariah state which I imagine will bother Israelis.
And with Arab states seeking other allies rather than the US I think Trump will have to soon sit up and take notice.

Good story Petra a bit like the Protestants who would marry Catholics during the troubles. Love will find a way thank goodness.

ronib Sun 21-Sept-25 16:58:50

I don’t agree with the continuing loss of life Babs03. Not sure that any number of statements will change that?

foxie48 Sun 21-Sept-25 16:58:30

There's a headline in today's Washington Post:
"Democrats rapidly shift on Israel amid Gaza assault, evidence of famine"
"A growing number of prominent Democrats are calling for cutting off sales of offensive weapons to Israel, part of a broad shift in opinion on Israel in the party."

It would appear that the support that the US usually gives to Israel has shifted dramatically in the last two months. I really hope this means that the US will start to cut back on the military aid that they are giving Israel and that Trump starts to put proper pressure on Netanyahu to call a ceasefire. I live in hope.

I have to agree with Netanyahu that the UK is absurd.

I think you probably agree with Netanyahu on quite a few things.

I believe that if the roles were reversed and an Israeli population were oppressed and treated like second class citizens in their own land land for decades by Palestinians that they would probably be troublesome as well.
Indeed when the Brits occupied what was then Palestine in the 1940s a Jewish group of terrorists would kill British soldiers and their families in a most heinous manner.
Menachem Begin was one such terrorist, though I imagine Israelis prefer to call him a freedom fighter.

My friends mother was a member of the Stern gang.
The odd twist was that she married a British soldier. One of the very people ( British troops) she wanted to kill.
Loves a funny thing, isn’t it?
