I think you will find your comment is incorrect. On inland waters of all types in the UK you need a boat licence. The Norfolk Broads is covered by the Broads Authority, River Ouse by the Environmental Agency, Upper Thames by the Environmental Agency and most Canals and other rivers (unless privately owned where seperate licences are required) by the Canal and River Trust.

I should have listened properly and read some posts first but I was so astonished I didn't!

It's Indefinite Leave to Remain he wants to remove. People who have lived here for years, work, pay taxes, have children here. Presumably it is similar to Permanent Residency in Australia.

No, somewhere upthread it was stated, IF the boats were registered they would be traceable back to their origin. Nothing about having permission to come ashore.

Most of the immigrants arrive on RIBs - the B stands for boat. Dinghies are used too, they have soft inflatable hulls, as opposed to rigid ones, but they are also referred to as boats. I think any craft over 10 horse power and over 15 feet has to have a licence, but I'm not sure, (and not in the country to ask someone who knows). DS1 has a RIB, I've been out on it often with him on the Jurassic Coast. The boat is relatively buoyant and stable, but overloading it with people would not be a good idea.
IF all boats, that weren't for recreational use, were registered, then at least this might provide official proof of the boat's ownership and provenance, might it not?

Suspending reality here: let’s suppose someone wanted to register the craft. I know from experience ( once owning a yacht that was registered with Lloyds ) they wouldn’t pass the safety test 😂

I believe if Farage does get into power he will certainly do some of what he promises.Some…not all.

I'm not sure where the idea of mass deportations comes from. What I've seen is that he proses to remove Rught to Remain status from everyone who already has it (about 4 million people apparently) and not grant it to anyone in the future.
He didn't work out the potential cost benefit he quoted it from a report of a right wing group who have actually now withdrawn it saying there were errors in calculating it.

It's all pie in the sky nonsense, of course, but I'm sure it will impress his supporters.

He wants to deport immigrants but, as far as I heard on the lunch-time news, he didn't specify which immigrants.

As far as I could tell he meant anyone who was here, even with a time-limited visa which could be renewed as he would scrap 'leave to remain'.

That would surely mean people who are here legally, working and paying taxes. People married to British citizens, their children if they were not born here, the list could be extensive.

You'd probably be surprised at the "nice" people who work in the vice trade or use it. I can remember standing at the gate at the very good school my kids went to, looking at a parent and thinking if you only knew what your partner gets up to.

Also the sadness at coming into work and seeing mugshots from the night before of people I knew.

It was the best and worst job I ever did. Lots of laughs with some very tough women who made a choice and some very sad stories. Not to mention the murders particularly when a young child was interviewed about the last time they saw mummy.

I also heard some very funny stories from some of the prostitues about the very respectable and sometimes very well known men and their um interests. You can't really see them on TV without remembering some of those details.

I worked for the local vice squad in the 80s. Plenty of raids and arrests and our officers knew about trafficking although back then it was normally naive British girls rather than girls being brought in from abroad.

Yep....that doesn't surprise me.....ie the comment about "naive British girls" re who was working in those brothels.

The "madam" of that particular brothel was certainly supremely naive or stupid or both. One of the tales that got swopped as to just how the police had got involved and moved them on was that there was a decent little primary school nearby (one of the ones you wanted your nice little child to go to - rather than a "Oh heck - avoid that school if you can" ones).

The madam only tried to recruit some extra workers for the brothel from some of the "nice little mummies" taking their "nice little kids" to school LOL LOL LOL. I think we all couldnt believe that anyone would do anything so stupid - but she did try to recruit at least one "nice little mummy". That mummy or mummies not surprisingly took it as an insult and were horrified and that tale spread in about two seconds flat....

The concerns about it were no odds to anyone - remembering a friend of mine that lived in the area expressing horror in case her young adult daughter got "approached" at all - which was one of the humorous moments out of it (ie because it would be obvious from the end of a street that her daughter was a lesbian - and "out and proud" about it). I don't think anyone could have missed realising that - but my friend still hit the ceiling with concern.

I'm still struggling with getting my head around that and thinking "It MIGHT have been a genuine job offer - ie as the personal secretary he said it was".....but he was someone prone to lies anyway (as I subsequently found out). There were a noticeable number of evenings where I stayed at his flat - throughout the evening and subsequent night - whilst he said he was "out with his friends" and I knew how much of a group the Arab students were there and believed him. But someone (I can't remember who...) told me he'd lied and was actually chasing other women (and maybe catching them) during those evenings.

So he wasnt a truthful person anyway. I can see why he quoted the figure of £100 per week - yep....I went onto Chat GPT again to see what a reasonable level personal secretary was paid in England at the time and it seems to have been around £50 per week. I do remember thinking "Oh that's double what I get that he's just offered me". To a single poorly-paid woman who hadn't even begun to get financially straight at that point = that amount was going to sound tempting.

In the interval between then and now I've read an account of an embassy in our own country where there seemed to be "added extras" expected of secretarial staff - so goodness only knows how a naive inexperienced woman (as I was then) would have managed to ensure it was secretarial work and only secretarial work I did I don't know. Logic tells me now that someone who only speaks their own language couldnt really have done that sort of job in someone else's country. I guess I'd just wildly assumed that I would just be required to do letters to British politicians (ie in English)/smile sweetly and hand round drinks at things like Embassy functions. Duh!

I think it's really only hitting me and adding up fully in my mind now after all these years - because I have been seeing some awful tales about what happened to some women tempted over with job offers.

(But I'm off out now for a day in the sun, so will try to catch up on the stories later).

I agree that new practises on this issue often have a bumpy start. The trouble is that they usually turn into a maelstrom, and we get no further on.
I'm not angry enough, (because I'm not one for rage or wrath), to want to support Farage, and I don't believe he can crack the numbers either, but he does have a point about what it's all costing us longterm.
