Islamophobia

Extracts from the The Observer Leader with which I entirely agree.

“Last weekend about 110000 people gathered in Whitehall to listen to Tommy Robinson and others spew hatred towards Muslims.

Their claims were baseless and their language abhorrent.

It was also actionable.

If the same rhetoric had been used about people who are black or Jewish there would have been arrests.

Whenever a community is dehumanised by racists it is dehumanised in the same way, with sweeping accusations of violence and menace with no regard for truth or the basic tenet of a just society that no one should be persecuted on the basis of their religion or race.

……………………
The Unite the Kingdom demonstration was a national disgrace.

Everyone who took part, even if simply by showing up and listening, was a bystander to hate; not free speech.

They are helping to spread fear amongst fellow citizens who happen to be Muslim.

Not seeing it that way is no excuse”

You only have to replace the word Muslim to Jewish to understand just how dangerous the rhetoric was.

This should never be allowed to happen again.

Yes WWM2, opened and closed quotes

Situation normal on GN. My post completely misunderstood
The above is an example of what I meant. I like to think that the majority of members understand that when you’re quoting someone/something you use the quote facility on your keyboard, that’s what it’s there for, to dispel confusion.

Don't tell me people don't know what Tommy Robinson is and what he stands for. He has numerous violent offences to his name and he is well
known for his anti-Muslim stance. All those emboldened "I'm not a racist, but .." people are coming out of the woodwork now.

Why on earth would you turn up for a demonstration called by someone of whom you strongly disapproved, and whose views and actions were repellant to you? I too am of the view that anyone attending the TR protest were fully aware and supportive of the racist agenda.

Having been at the counter-demonstration, I saw that the TR demo was disproportionately attended by males, and very intimidating males at that. They threw fire crackers at the horses and did their utmost to break into our much smaller counter-demonstration. Fortunately the police were able to prevent them from doing so, but it was touch and go.

Tim Farron is right with his words on the flags and reclaiming them and the Lib Dems will probably do well at the next election, so will Reform and the Greens.
The two main Parties are now looking increasingly dated.

growstuff Tue 23-Sept-25 14:50:29

At the LibDem conference, Tim Farron wrapped himself in a Blackburn Rovers flag, which included a Union Jack.

"Farron told a hall full of activists to "stop being so flaming squeamish and English" and reclaim the UK's flags from groups who seek to "divide and destroy".

"Be proud of your country, the British flag and the flags of our four nations," he said. "They are ours. They belong to all of us. Let's take them back. Let's wave them with pride."

"Let us reclaim our flags for those who would reunite and rebuild, not divide and destroy, because we will not yield our identity, our flag, or our country, to the nationalists.

"A Britain that may be broken by the wickedness of hatred, fake news and isolation, but a Britain that I passionately believe is not beyond healing."

The Liberal Democrats are going all out this week to claim that they are the true patriots, in contrast to Reform UK leader Nigel Farage, who they have dubbed a "plastic patriot".

They have even created a "plastic patriot" Farage Lego figure, which is included in a welcome pack being handed out to journalists."

Babs03 I simply don’t agree with your view that it isn’t wise for this kind of March to take place again. You either agree with all marches and protests going ahead whether you agree with them or not or you ban all protests and gatherings.Cherry picking isn’t an option.

Oreo Tue 23-Sept-25 14:41:56

Whitewavemark2

The trouble is oreoyour default appears to be to disagree without giving it any real thought.

That’s just you being personal.
When copying and pasting long pieces from papers or mags it’s best to be crystal clear.

Babs03 Tue 23-Sept-25 13:55:46

@Oreo some of those attending the March were not exercising freedom of speech but using hate speech/inciting hate crimes which is against the law and hopefully they were caught on camera and arrested.
Of course there will always be a minority who kick off at any demo but when the demo is organised by a racist criminal who has named himself after a famous football hooligan, and been imprisoned for GBH and various other violent crimes, I think it is wise to say that we hope this kind of march doesn’t take place again. This, however, doesn’t rule out those who feel up in arms about any political issue organising a peaceful march without a racist criminal or Musk being involved.

Imo there wouldn’t have been such confusion if the quote from the Observer had been copied in quotes.

It says ‘this should never be allowed to happen again’ but I daresay it agrees with all demos, protests and marches going ahead as long as it agrees with them. It…being the Observer and journalists who write for it.

There you go again, making it up as you go along.

The leader talked about actionable offences that were not acted upon, although if - and rightly so, - the words were interchanged with another minority like Jew or black - action would almost certainly have been taken.

My reaction was that this (non-a tion) must never be allowed to happen again.

Get it?

Oreo Tue 23-Sept-25 09:59:31

So the bit about it never being allowed to happen again is your own take on free speech and marches Whitewavemark2 that’s interesting.
Only your own favoured causes would be allowed but not anything you disagree with?
I don’t think for anyone your OP was clear even tho some will claim it was.
You start off by saying it’s from the Observer and that you agree with it which is clear, but the two sentences at the bottom would have been better served by you prefacing them with the words IMO.
People read very quickly and it’s better to be really clear.

Most people haven’t heard of it and not many agree with it, who cares if it was the ‘leader’ or not, somebody wrote it unless it was AI 😂
Whoever wrote it wants it banned for the future….but not the protests or marches that the Observer likes of course.

What exactly do you mean by "it"?

If you mean the march in London, it was all over social media, so I would guess many people had heard of it.

If you mean the article in the Observer, I would guess the readers read it - and many more who aren't Observer readers agree with its sentiments.

Lots of people care, even if you obviously don't.

And even more people don’t care 😂

Whitewavemark2 Tue 23-Sept-25 07:51:46

What I find so utterly bizarre are the assumptions and misreading over what is actually in the OP. It is possibly because of the inability to understand which part of the OP is the quote and which is my contribution.

It should be obvious “” and paragraphs being clues, but for some it clearly isn’t.

It’s just one journalist’s view who writes for the Observer, no need for anyone to worry about it or give it credence.

Most of us would never have heard of it were it not for this thread

😂

I'm beginning to think I live in a parallel universe.

Do other people have a different version of the OP from me? I've re-read it a few times, but however hard I try, I can't see anything disgraceful or beyond the pale in it. All seems very fair comment.

🤔

All I said was that some of us would not have known about it were it not for seeing this thread.

Have I used the words disgraceful or beyond the pale?
Not as far as I am aware so why are you intimidating I dud?

How strange.

No! Not you! Sorry if you thought that. I assumed you were being sarcastic. Others claimed the Observer article was "beyond the pale" and a "disgrace".

The thread does seem to have taken a bizarre turn.

Ww2 - you like to stir.
As you agreed on another thread.

I doubt I will participate much in this discussion as it is another stir thread.

My two points for now are, please say what you personally mean by your own title of Islamophobia.

And also what you personally mean by the term racist.

Those two words mean different things to different people.

What do you personally, mean by them?

The only people who allegedly don't know what the words mean are those who want to deny their implication (goodness knows why they would want to do that) and attempt to twist meaning.
