I am very close to a young mum with an autistic child.
I’ve listened to all episodes on The autistic curve. ( Radio4)
Nowhere have I heard anyone talk about the fathers of these children. I say this because the farther of this child was a heavy user of drugs.

I doubt if there is anyone brave enough in the sciences in USA to oppose POTUS on this.

This is supported by robust data.
Reliable research into autism suggests that the causes of this are a complex interplay of environment and genetics. Mr Trump and Mr RFK prefer simple answers, however unproven.

Taking any drugs during pregnancy is risky. Not sure why he has honed in on this one but maybe he knows something the rest of us don’t. Or he’s had a disagreement with the manufacturer.

Who knows with Trump? Maybe to take the credit for the recent study himself?
I never took anything at all in pregnancy for the just in case theory.

I agree with GrannyGravy’s comment about this being yet another way to guilt trip millions of mothers. A small scale Harvard study does not out-Trump the huge Swedish study. He really is irresponsible, there is no other way to spin this.

I agree with the need for detailed research now it’s been raised, either to validate it or discredit it.

Surely this is the point with any drug taken at any time - but especially during pregnancy!

Yes, I did. I even read the full version of the paper. This is part of the conclusion:

"While population-level trends in NDD rates have risen, potentially due to several factors including improved diagnostics and external exposures, further research is needed to confirm these associations and determine causality and mechanisms."

The paper concludes that there is an association between the increases in diagnosed cases of autism and increasing use of paracetamol as the preferred painkiller during pregnancy, but crucially no causation. It could be that the two increases are coincidental.

I read another critique of the paper, which pointed out that the reason women were taking paracetamol (for example, a virus) could be the cause of autism, rather than the paracetamol.

It all needs further research. However, given that paracetamol is the safest painkiller during pregnancy, it's irresponsible to make the kind of announcement Trump did.

This is just the latest lie he speaks without knowing a thing about it. There is no known link between paracetamol and autism except in RFK's mind

Autism is present from birth. Their brains are wired differently to others. There is nothing wrong with them they are just different. People like Trump with zero experience within the medical field should keep their opinions to themselves. Some people will listen to this orange buffoon. The US must be in the same boat as us, counting down the months to the next election.

Aside from arguments on either side... when I was expecting both sons in the 70's my instincts told me not to take any type of medication, drug, or alcohol during pregnancy, and not to smoke. Seemed a small sacrifice in the circumstances. I was lucky to be able to keep to to it. And just made sure to eat good food.

So I just made the decision purely on instinct, as did most of my peer group then. The people I knew anyway.

As with any drug, caution is needed.
Paracetamol has its contra-indications, as with any drug.

It was not up to Trump to announce this and panic people.
However, doctors, particularly obstetricians , must be aware.

Trump and Kennedy junior have held a press conference to reinforce their claims against paracetamol.

Two more unhealthy individuals you have never seen in your life. Mister President is orange, often an indicator of cirrhosis and Kennedy is a peculiar shade of light mahogany. And as wizzened as a dried up tangerine.

I suspect doctors and obstetricians take more notice of a comprehensive study with 2.4 million cases, such as the Swedish study though. Rightly so.

There is no reliable evidence that paracetamol causes autism.
As many posters have pointed out, pregnant women are usually reluctant to take anything even if ill.

Trump and JFK dangerous idiots. There is no doubt a link between increasing knowledge and increased diagnosis. More children with significant physical or other disabilities are surviving, some with autism amongst complex diagnosis

Petra up thread mentions the possibility of the contribution fathers make to the development of autism in their children. We know of a strong genetic link. Petra questions the impact of abuse of street drugs. We certainly have large numbers of parents dependent on drink and drugs. I assume research is ongoing
