Trump attacked Sadiq Khan when speaking at the UN today saying he is a horrible mayor and imposing Sharia law on London.
What!!!!
Firstly what has our London Mayor got to do with Trump??
If Londoners want to critisize him so be it but Trump should just keep his nose out of it.
Also to say all that nonsense about Sharia law is offensive and blatantly Islamophobic.
The US ambassador in London should be called to account over this.

ExaltedWombat Thu 25-Sept-25 14:31:30

Trump's opinion of London is precisely as relevant as our opinion of Trump.

There are Sharia courts in Britain. Also Ecclesiastical courts for Church of England matters and Beth Din for Jews. Quite possibly Hindus, Sikhs and others have their own versions. And, outside religion, we may agree to be bound by the decision of an Arbitrator, outside the court system.

No-one except a few extreme religious nuts seriously proposes giving any of these jurisdiction over anyone who doesn't consent to it. Certainly Kahn doesn't.

Yes, some of his policies, particularly the Emission Zones, have been annoying and inconvenient. But they are probably necessary. And were instigated by a Tory Mayor anyway.

But, as it seems increasingly apparent that it's just too inconvenient to do anything about global warming so we're just going to deny it, perhaps it will all get reversed!

Emeraldforest Thu 25-Sept-25 14:33:00

Khan's been voted in 3 times now, he must be doing something right.
Trump doesn't like him because he won't put up with his nonsense, unlike most politicians.

So if I say that I think female genital mutilation , which is still practised on some young Muslim girls, is horrific, I'm Islamaphobic, am I?

PS I don't want to say too much to reveal my identity, but I can assure you it still happens.

Babs03 Thu 25-Sept-25 14:35:05

Am surprised that so many who probably were shouting from the roof tops about foreign interference in British affairs during Brexit are now so happy with a president from another country slagging off one of our Mayors and spreading hateful lies about our capital.
Would take your national flags down tbh, you really aren’t proud to be British at all if you applaud this kind of behaviour.

AGAA4 Thu 25-Sept-25 14:38:33

I also believe that it reflected very badly on Trump to make a verbal attack on the mayor of London. It was petty and nasty.
In his position as Potus he should be above that sort of behaviour.
Saying it isn't good for Starmer is like saying Trump is responsible for everything his governors around the US say.

I haven’t seen anyone on here ‘applauding this behaviour’.

I am against FGM and have attended lectures and workshops about this, fact is the majority of Muslims - male and female - are also against this. There is also a growing case to be made about male genital mutilation when done on babies by religious leaders rather than medics, and not young men who can make up their own minds about it or have it for medical reasons. That as am sure you know is prevalent in both the Muslim and Jewish religions.
Tbh am not religious and my DH is an atheist because most organised religions can be cruel and seek to control the masses. Like the so called Christians in the US who send gay members of the family to correction facilities resulting in some committing suicide.

Labradora Thu 25-Sept-25 14:45:23

I don't think Trump has ever forgiven Sadiq for that Trump-Baby-Blimp. I think it it was the Mayor who OK'd the presence of the blimp at the last Trump state visit ??

Of course it was petty, but everyone knows that’s what Trump is like.
There was never any need for Khan to publicly insult a POTUS
And he should have known better.
Probably Trump thinks being Mayor of London is akin to the mayor of NY.

Yes it was.
A stupid and very undiplomatic choice.

Of course you aren’t, you are just against FGM which most people are in the UK.

Maremia Thu 25-Sept-25 15:33:15

May I just address the belief that the disgusting procedure of FGM is an Islamic practice?
Yes, it is practiced withing certain Muslim societies. It has also been a custom with ancient Egyptians, Skopsky Christians in Europe, Orthodox Christians in Ethiopia, Protestants and Catholics in Sudan and Kenya, and the Jewish Beta Israel of Ethiopia.
Its earliest reference is is 163BC, well before the beginnings of Islam.
And yes, as Oreo has stated above, most people in the UK are against this misogynistic procedure.

Whatever Trump's faults (and they are probably legion, but then who can trust the media?) he comes out with some inconvenient truths. He is not the only one to see that climate change, in the way it is being sold to us, is a hoax. There are many, many scientists who have lost their jobs by showing proof of this. The same goes for vaccines and drugs. And while you might not like Trump (I do not) to call him and his followers (was it 70 million?) stupid is really arrogant and self-righteous. Trump polarises people and many are too busy Trump-bashing, too ready to dismiss all he says as nonsense, to have any room for deep reflection or to keep anything resembling an open mind.

undines Thu 25-Sept-25 16:20:00

I'm sure people in this country would have plenty to say about the mayor of New York if he allowed balloons making fun of Starmer to be displayed at a state visit!

The issue here is that Tommy Robinson racist followers will lap it up.

I’m not a Tommy Robinson follower but I think Khan is a horrible Mayor

Please explain why?

GANNET Thu 25-Sept-25 16:58:58

I am sorry you cannot put that to bed. It is true that many Muslim men are now a bit more modern thinking but unfortunately I work with several families where the women are treated as no more than chattels and it is appalling. One of the women I have worked with for decades is now a grandmother. Her son brought over a young girl to marry and she was expected to work in the house and was abused by her new husband. She ran away to a refuge which means as a non English speaking she was desperate. The woman I have been working with for years tried to help ‘track her down’ with her husband and son by enlisting the help of a cousin who works in that arena - thankfully she was kept safe. I however know that my work with her has been a waste of time and that she actually is no better than her husband with his awful beliefs about women. So depressing

FGM is horrific and yes it is sadly practised by those who are died on the wool fanatics or just imbued in past cultures, but it’s not only practised by Muslims, but it’s wide spread on the African continent, etc.
What has being ignorant or just ill educated on this subject, to do with being Racist, specifically Islamophobic?
Most Racists just see ‘the other’ as being different from them and they are afraid. They eat into conspiracy theories and never see ‘the other’ as a human being, just someone who threatens them!
Try talking to some of these ‘others’ and you might find out you actually like them, and most are not all machete wielding murderers. Of course there are a few unhinged or radicalised peoples who get through the barriers of immigration, but we have our own homegrown unhinged murdered and radicalised people here already.

Mojack26 Thu 25-Sept-25 17:09:16

Allows...Totally agree with you! He has lost the plot...between that and Paracetamol can cause autism and during covid...injecting bleach might kill the virus! He's deranged...but in a very scary way as some people are actuallybelieving this nonsense!

That’s the problem with con men like Trump, they add a few truths into what is mainly a hotch potch of lies and exaggerations , and it sounds like truth and transparency! Many of us can see through it, but sadly so many more don’t and think he speaks ‘truth to power’ (a newer phrase I hate!).
Climate change is NOT a hoax, as with Covid, the Scientists are doing their best to deal with the unknown, and conspiracy theorists latch on to anything they say/have said that haven’t actually happened in the way they implied it MIGHT. Like the Covid pandemic, it is a thing that hasn’t a fixed solution YET, like vaccines that have proven safe after years, so they have to try to solve the issues ‘on the fly’ and stage by stage. And THEY DO. Just THINK and don’t just see the things that went wrong in the struggle to solve the crisis, whatever it might be!

Jane43

Do you live in London? If so can you explain what he has done to make you think he is a horrible mayor?

Yes, my whole life until end of last year.

Where shall I start ......

Congestion Zone fee
ULEZ fee (it cost us £12.50 to drive our car off of our driveway, before we'd even got anywhere)
Mugging/knife crime through the roof
Streets unsafe (used to be only after dark, now 24/7)
Litter
Crowded
Expensive/very high cost of living
Homelessness
Noise

There you go Jane
Few thoughts of my opinion of Sadiq Khans time as mayor which blighted the end years of my 60+ years of being born and bred in London.

Babs03 Thu 25-Sept-25 17:25:35

@JdotJ
That’s fine, you’re a Londoner, so complain all you like about Sadiq Khan, some Londoners would disagree with you but they’re Londoners too so their opinion is also valid.
But why should a president of another country who knows nothing about our capital city stick his oar in.
Is like Starmer crtizing the Mayor of a US state.
And why to the UN and the whole world’s cameras?
Is absurd and offensive to those who insist they are proud to be British.

Anyone who has worked in health, social care, education, police and more will be well aware that FGM remains an issue.
Sueld points out it isn’t confined to the Muslim community, it’s prevalent in areas of Africa. I’ve never know it to be practiced or expected in our British Muslims with backgrounds in India or Pakistan

It’s barbaric and causes life long health problems. It’s being challenged by various agencies of course but is so deep routed in some communities

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Thu 25-Sept-25 17:31:32

Yes iam I always thought FGM was more prevalent in African families. Awful nasty practice. Another aspect of a male dominant hierarchy deciding how females should be cut.
