Breaking news, midnight - Peace in the Middle East?

US President Donald Trump has announced that "Israel and Hamas have both signed off on the first Phase of our Peace Plan"

"This means that ALL of the Hostages will be released very soon, and Israel will withdraw their Troops to an agreed upon line", Trump says on Truth Social

Trump is "considering travelling to the Middle East" in the coming days, according to the White House

Mediators from the US, Egypt and Qatar in Sharm El-Sheikh have been attempting to broker an agreement for a ceasefire in Gaza and a release of Israeli hostages still held by Hamas
The negotiations come two years and two days after Israel launched a military campaign in Gaza in response to the 7 October 2023 attack, in which Hamas-led gunmen killed about 1,200 people and took 251 others as hostages

At least 67,183 have been killed by Israeli military operations in Gaza since then, the Hamas-run health ministry says

Well, we'll have to see - but I so hope that tomorrow will bring clarity that indeed matters will move forward now to peace, and that its not a Trump claim that cannot be backed up

I was so sad to listen to bbc news which had an article reporting on the fact that most doctors and medical people hoping to go into Gaza and help heal so many, are being denied permission by Israel.

Presumably that will soon stop once their occupation ends?

I agree Wyllow. There seems to be a perception that all Hamas are uneducated thugs. My DD was tutoring a Palestinian boy online, at the beginning of the war, who wanted to study engineering. He told her after his lesson that he was joining the " freedom fighters" along with some of his friends as the IDF were harassing his family every night and wouldn't let them sleep.
This is another side to a story of young men who just wanted to go to university and and do some good for their families.

Exactly, as I said. Makes people feel good I think dehumanising others.

Galaxy Sun 12-Oct-25 09:21:22

Saying we are wary of people who pretty much everyone sees as a terrorist organisation is not dehumanising, they are currently fighting internally as we speak.

Oreo Sun 12-Oct-25 09:23:32

The worst hamas thugs are the educated ones.

The worst hamas thugs are the educated ones.

How can you know this? Really?

Life is complex, situations, families are complex. That area has so many historical and present day things at play.

How can you possibly know that?

So the stabilisation force will compose of Egypt, Qatar, Turkey and UEA troops, plus 200 USA personnel.

The hope is that they don’t turn into another occupying force and carry out Israel’s dirty work for them.

My goodness it is oh so fragile!

It will be a miracle if peace holds and prospers.

Yes, hopefully, WWM Also at what point will foreign journalists be allowed into Gaza? The world needs to make it's own mind up about what has happened in Gaza not filtered through the Israeli or Hamas propaganda machines. Many more bodies are being found in the ruins so it is likely that the number who died in this dreadful war will increase substantially. I cannot begin to imagine what it has been like for Gazans for the past two years, it must be like living hell. Also for those Israeli families who still have relatives or friends being held hostage, just dreadful! I really hope that this is the end and that there is peace and time for everyone on both sides to heal.

They’re the ones who really run hamas and live elsewhere.

Yes once journalists are allowed in - and it can’t be too long I would have thought, the truth will be there for all to see.

If the ‘dirty work’ consists of killing or arresting hamas where they won’t give up and carry on where they can with resistance then that’s ok.

Selfishly I am already considering not looking at any news once journalists get in there.

I am one little person and I can't take the horror.

What I am hoping though is that the resources of medical aid and food will flood in as a result.

Palestine was one of the best educated places in the Middle East and I would hope that schools and universities are once again flourishing with the worlds help.

Casdon Sun 12-Oct-25 09:41:29

I know what you mean StripeyGran. I keep thinking of those thousands of families walking home, finding their houses obliterated and having to dig through the rubble to find the bodies of their family members. It’s heartbreaking, and it feels voyeurustic to film it, so I won’t be watching either.

ronib Sun 12-Oct-25 09:43:12

The first statement from Hamas needs to address its long stated aim of killing Israelis. That would be a very welcome start. Only then could Israel engage with the resettlement of Gaza. Israel cannot tolerate a marauding force on its border. It is never again time ….

Yes I absolutely understand and respect your reasoning and would normally hope that is what happens.

But I feel that the unfortunate truth is that people in this age of fast moving SM, need the pictures of the evidence of the destruction and carnage before their eyes to encourage them to give aid etc,

The Palestinians understood this - look at all the videos and pictures on SM asking for help before Israel more or less closed them down.

AGAA4 Sun 12-Oct-25 09:58:22

A young Palestinian woman said they feel dehumanised. They have returned home but their homes have been flattened. They don't recognise their former neighbourhoods.

AGAA4 Sun 12-Oct-25 09:59:52

That was on LK on BBC this morning.

silverlining48 Sun 12-Oct-25 10:03:27

Just been announced by bbc that aid delivery is about to begin in Gaza.

ronib Sun 12-Oct-25 10:36:31

I have to ask how dehumanised the families of the dead Israeli hostages feel?

CariadAgain I’ve never reported any of your comments, but in any case it’s always the moderators who decide what to delete, they wouldn’t do that just for a disagreement or different viewpoint.
Fortunately I don’t take your view on the State of Israel seriously .

It's okay Oreo - I didnt think it was you. I've figured out who it probably was.

Why do you feel the need to ask that ronib? They are suffering, just as all innocent people affected by this awful war, and all other wars, are suffering. It’s not Top Trumps.

ronib Sun 12-Oct-25 10:45:56

Nice deflection going on today.

ronib Sun 12-Oct-25 10:46:45

I actually think some Posters only 'see' one side of the situation.
