Breaking news, midnight - Peace in the Middle East?

US President Donald Trump has announced that "Israel and Hamas have both signed off on the first Phase of our Peace Plan"

"This means that ALL of the Hostages will be released very soon, and Israel will withdraw their Troops to an agreed upon line", Trump says on Truth Social

Trump is "considering travelling to the Middle East" in the coming days, according to the White House

Mediators from the US, Egypt and Qatar in Sharm El-Sheikh have been attempting to broker an agreement for a ceasefire in Gaza and a release of Israeli hostages still held by Hamas
The negotiations come two years and two days after Israel launched a military campaign in Gaza in response to the 7 October 2023 attack, in which Hamas-led gunmen killed about 1,200 people and took 251 others as hostages

At least 67,183 have been killed by Israeli military operations in Gaza since then, the Hamas-run health ministry says

Well, we'll have to see - but I so hope that tomorrow will bring clarity that indeed matters will move forward now to peace, and that its not a Trump claim that cannot be backed up

A man has also been shot for allegedly throwing a grenade at a vehicle. None of the soldiers were hurt.

"Arab peoples are naturally quite lean tho there are some older women and men that become overweight."

Really Oreo this is a fact? Have you never seen pictures of belly dancers etc? Try telling that to my friend who has spent years living in the Middle East I know she'd violently disagree with you.

More casual racism and inaccuracy.

In fact obesity is a real issue in the Arab states.

“They look thin, not because they’ve been starved for months on end, but because they are naturally lean”

I’ve heard it all now!

Anniebach there is a photo of the little boy who was shot on BBC website. He looks about seven but he is ten. Looks younger through lack of nutrition perhaps?

The BBC ?

The BBC committed a "serious breach" of broadcasting rules by failing to disclose that the narrator of a documentary about Gaza was the son of a Hamas official, UK media regulator Ofcom has ruled.
An Ofcom investigation into Gaza: How to Survive a Warzone has concluded that the programme was "materially misleading".
The BBC's director general has previously apologised, saying there had been "a significant failing in relation to accuracy".
Ofcom has ordered the BBC to broadcast a prime-time statement about its conclusions.
"As this represents a serious breach of our rules, we are directing the BBC to broadcast a statement of our findings against it on BBC2 at 21:00, with a date to be confirmed," it said.

I can attest to that - I've spent time doing bellydancing as a hobby for some years and the Arabic role models so to say were certainly rather voluptuous often.

Smileless2012 Sat 18-Oct-25 10:56:22

hmm so are you suggesting that everything the BBC says cannot be trusted Annie or is it only what doesn't support your arguments?

At the moment I’m crying - I can’t believe what I am reading on here this morning.

John Simpson

Government ministers, newspaper columnists, ordinary people - they're all asking why the BBC doesn't say the Hamas gunmen who carried out appalling atrocities in southern Israel are terrorists.
The answer goes right back to the BBC's founding principles.
Terrorism is a loaded word, which people use about an outfit they disapprove of morally. It's simply not the BBC's job to tell people who to support and who to condemn - who are the good guys and who are the bad guys.
We regularly point out that the British and other governments have condemned Hamas as a terrorist organisation, but that's their business. We also run interviews with guests and quote contributors who describe Hamas as terrorists.
The key point is that we don't say it in our voice. Our business is to present our audiences with the facts, and let them make up their own minds.

Smileless2012 Sat 18-Oct-25 11:10:41

The BBC always says that Hamas are a proscribed terrorist organisation Annie.

The BBC always says that Hamas are a proscribed terrorist organisation Annie.

They qualify it by saying 'According to the Government' which is a mealy-mouthed way of saying they do not agree.

foxie48 Sat 18-Oct-25 11:34:01

I have never heard the BBC use the words "according to".

Maremia Sat 18-Oct-25 11:37:05

Perhaps that's because it's the Government who does the proscription? But, why should any 'Arab' child fear the IDF? Has cause been given by the actions of the IDF?

Maremia Sat 18-Oct-25 11:37:54

They use words like ' Hamas controlled '. Something like that.

Really?

This has been a catastrophic few weeks for BBC News. It started with the decision not to use the words “terrorist” or “terrorist organisation” to describe Hamas

On the weight issue, unfortunately most countries are heading towards obese due to junk food and sugar but I stand by my fact that overall Arab peoples have a lean ( but strong) physique.
As for belly dancing it’s a complete myth to think you need a fat belly! Professional dancers have normal to slim bodies.
You can still learn to belly dance if you’re overweight of course.

Maremia Sat 18-Oct-25 12:05:06

'Rebuilding our house will take my entire lifetime. ...I think a lot about my children's future. There is no clear future in Gaza'

Oreo Sat 18-Oct-25 12:05:16

Just because you haven’t heard the BBC say it doesn’t mean they haven’t done foxie48.
And yes I have heard those words quite a bit in the last two years on BBC news sites. As have other people.

Interesting debate GNs. Does the BBC at anytime say that Netanyahu has an arrest warrant for war crimes?

CariadAgain Sat 18-Oct-25 12:17:43

It is shocking that some people here won't seem to accept the Palestinians have been deliberately starved - unless they see people looking like someone who just got out of the Nazi concentration camps of the 2nd World War. Yep...there are indeed some people who have been starved that much that that is precisely what they look like and most others don't look much better.

A lot of the people I've seen photos of don't look that far from "escapee from Belsen" level for goodness sake.

When you've come from a military family you know that "breaking their will" is a deliberate tactic used on people one wishes to suppress and make them obey. How much more trying to "break their will" through every means they can think of is going to be wreaked on the Palestinians? Starving them, shunting them from pillar to post repeatedly, bombing their homes etc into oblivion and yet still Netanyahu are seeking excuses to start it all up again bigtime attacking them and stealing yet more of their land...

BBC
Judges at the International Criminal Court (ICC) have issued arrest warrants for Israel’s prime minister and former defence minister, as well as the military commander of Hamas.
A statement said a pre-trial chamber had rejected Israel’s challenges to the court’s jurisdiction and issued warrants for Benjamin Netanyahu and Yoav Gallant.
A warrant was also issued for Mohammed Deif of Hamas, although Israel has said he was killed in an air strike in Gaza in July.
The judges said there were “reasonable grounds” the three men bore "criminal responsibility" for alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity during the war between Israel and Hamas. Both Israel and Hamas have rejected the allegations.

It is shocking I agree CariadAgain but that's probably why Israel has been able to what it has for so long.
