Breaking news, midnight - Peace in the Middle East?

US President Donald Trump has announced that "Israel and Hamas have both signed off on the first Phase of our Peace Plan"

"This means that ALL of the Hostages will be released very soon, and Israel will withdraw their Troops to an agreed upon line", Trump says on Truth Social

Trump is "considering travelling to the Middle East" in the coming days, according to the White House

Mediators from the US, Egypt and Qatar in Sharm El-Sheikh have been attempting to broker an agreement for a ceasefire in Gaza and a release of Israeli hostages still held by Hamas
The negotiations come two years and two days after Israel launched a military campaign in Gaza in response to the 7 October 2023 attack, in which Hamas-led gunmen killed about 1,200 people and took 251 others as hostages

At least 67,183 have been killed by Israeli military operations in Gaza since then, the Hamas-run health ministry says

Well, we'll have to see - but I so hope that tomorrow will bring clarity that indeed matters will move forward now to peace, and that its not a Trump claim that cannot be backed up

Oreo this isn’t a competition, innocent people from both sides were killed, and they all deserve our compassion. This thread is about achieving peace, not blame.

You don’t sound on board with the ceasefire agreement Wwm2. Do you want the fighting to end or continue?
Does torture include unlawful killing? In which case Hamas has a case to answer.

I haven’t seen any tortured Palestinians. How exactly did they appear to have been abused?

Some on stretchers, some gaunt and obviously underfed, some testifying to beatings. Israelis top court has judged the detainees have not been given adequate food. Reported on numerous sites in September if you want to check, BBC, CBC, Times if Israel to just name three.

Prison food is never great and some went on hunger strikes.
There’s a lot of tears on here for criminals.
By contrast the poor hostages, innocent of any wrongdoing were really starved, tortured and raped and also murdered.

As I said upthread there are many sides to this continuing story. All should be listened to. Every atrocity acknowledged. Every one.
One side doing 'this' does not excuse the other side doing 'that'.

No prisoner should be held in prison where they are tortured. They should all be released or the torture must stop.

Allegedly tortured.

I understand many had been arrested in the West Bank after 07/10 and held without trial, it does smack a bit of retribution, doesn't it?

I fear it's going to be difficult identifying the bodies which have been under rubble for months and months, including those of the hostages. I sincerely hope that this isn't used as a reason for ending the ceasefire. It's very worrying.

I read that the estimate is that up to 9,000 people are buried under the rubble. 200 have been dug out so far, so there is a very long way to go. It’s one of the most distressing elements of the aftermath of a war.

Escaped yes some women were killed but they aren't being held now which is what is being alleged.

Tortured raped and murdered by hamas. Children murdered to shut them up by hamas.
These were innocent people unlike the jailed Palestinians, many of which were serving sentences for terrorism offences and several murders.Don’t waste your sympathy on them.

ronib Tue 14-Oct-25 09:31:01

As President Trump said - what do you want? Another 300 to 400 thousand dead people.

No one should be murdered for attending a music festival.

I thought reference was made to the release of prisoners yesterday not in September?

I was pleased to see that Israeli hostages seemed to be reasonably well. The Palestinians hostages, some of them children, didn't fare as well.

Families of the the deceased hostages who haven't been returned have called for a suspension of the ceasefire. Israel's defence minister has said that Hamas has failed to meet it's commitments.
This is worrying news. Many bodies are still buried under the rubble. Hamas has said it will take time to locate the other bodies.
I hope this won't be an excuse to carry on fighting.

Yes this is exactly what could scupper the fragility.

If Netanyahu had any integrity, he would have issued a statement explaining the difficulty in finding anything in such destruction, but after yesterdays speech I realise that he has not a breath of integrity about him.

Perhaps other Israeli leaders could step in and help the bereaved in their distress?

Whitewavemark2 Tue 14-Oct-25 08:45:39

We should never take sides.

But torture was outlawed by the allies immediately after the Second World War, to try to prevent what they witnessed had been done to millions of people.

I think that it should be incumbent on everyone to call out every state that breaks such a basic human right as being free from torture.

Granny gravy yes I saw the news yesterday. Not sure what that has to do with locating 24 dead Israelis.

The hostages have allegedly been kept in tunnels.

Hamas have been in the tunnels.

If Hamas terrorists are ok, then the bodies of the hostages whereabouts should be known.

I have been watching with delight as the hostages greet their families.

I am now watching in utter horror at the tortured bodies of the Palestinian hostages.

What on earth makes people who do such appalling things tick? How on earth can the torturers face their family on their return home each day.

Ask yourself why Hamas hasn’t released any female hostages…

Oh my gosh, your comment really made me feel sick imagining their plight.

The suffering of the children in bombed Gaza is distressing, too.

It's too sad to be making comparisons or to be taking "sides".

I cannot get past the testimonies of the female hostages released, along with the horrific pictures of women paraded on 7/10.

Made to walk with blood soaking through their trousers, tied up on backs of lorry’s paraded through Gaza, spat on whilst the Hamas soldiers were cheered…

I know where my sympathy lies.

It is also with the women and children of Gaza used as human shields whilst the cowardly Hamas hid in their tunnels with food, water etc…

Haven't been watching all of the footage, so missed witnessing that.

Some of them looked pretty bad, no homes to go to, no state of the art hospitals to treat them. Some being illegally deported from their own country. It seems a very unequal deal and can only store up resentment for the future. Very shortsighted.

Before the war many Palestinians were routinely treated in Israeli hospitals, just as a matter of course. Just as many Palestinians worked across the borders. I hope that this will resume, at least until Gaza has its own hospitals up,and running properly again.

theworriedwell Tue 14-Oct-25 08:34:55

The female hostages were released in the previous deals. They were mainly keeping men of military age so they are the ones being released.

Women undoubtedly experienced horrors but none held now. Israel had excellent information and would not have left them behind.

@grannygravy13 the female hostages were priority in the earlier release of hostages. Only men left so only men released.

And Hamas killed the rest so the females couldn't tell the world about the atrocities - starting on day 1 when they struck. We saw those violent, disgusting pictures.
