Breaking news, midnight - Peace in the Middle East?
(1001 Posts)US President Donald Trump has announced that "Israel and Hamas have both signed off on the first Phase of our Peace Plan"
"This means that ALL of the Hostages will be released very soon, and Israel will withdraw their Troops to an agreed upon line", Trump says on Truth Social
Trump is "considering travelling to the Middle East" in the coming days, according to the White House
Mediators from the US, Egypt and Qatar in Sharm El-Sheikh have been attempting to broker an agreement for a ceasefire in Gaza and a release of Israeli hostages still held by Hamas
The negotiations come two years and two days after Israel launched a military campaign in Gaza in response to the 7 October 2023 attack, in which Hamas-led gunmen killed about 1,200 people and took 251 others as hostages
At least 67,183 have been killed by Israeli military operations in Gaza since then, the Hamas-run health ministry says
Well, we'll have to see - but I so hope that tomorrow will bring clarity that indeed matters will move forward now to peace, and that its not a Trump claim that cannot be backed up
Alison Kreil Head
In response to a tweet that asked, “Who controls the news” from another account, Kriel claimed the news is “96 per cent Jewish owned but not sure what percentage Zionist”.
When challenged on her comment, she continued to spread the antisemitic trope.
Kriel said: “I’m reliably informed that it’s 96 per cent Israeli controlled.”
She continued: “What... Israelis have no access to the internet? Most of us have been following the live-streaming of the genocide that way especially as 96 per cent of all media is Jewish owned.”
Daniel Sugarman, Director of Public Affairs for the Board of Deputies called the tweet a “prime example” of “virulent antisemitism.”
Sugarman said: “A proud self-declared ‘anti-racist’, previously a well-regarded headteacher, now an education consultant. Just casually and publicly coming out with Der Stürmer grade antisemitism.”
Government adviser, Tom Bennett OBE wrote on X/Twitter that Kriel’s comments were “A ghastly anti-semitic conspiracy theory.”
He told Kriel to delete her tweet: "take a while to reconsider your stance towards one of the most oppressed groups in history. It may be unintentional, but it contributes to a climate of fear, hatred and racism.”
Kriel’s tweets were still online at the time of publication.
Yes I was sure it would be Israels fault.

So - if you are so sure why not address what she says and disprove her?

With Hamas refusing to disarm and openly executing those that oppose them I’m not expecting this ceasefire to last long. It’s all about Hamas reorganizing to make it impossible for any new security force to operate
Did anyone think it was going to last?
Nobody I’ve spoken to thought so.
I would like to see justice for all.
Ordinary Israelis can travel anywhere in the world and be interviewed by the press and we listen to their words with sadness and despair at their situation.
Ordinary Palestinians can travel no where and no one can hear their voices.
Who is to speak for them? People like Kriel.
Hardly anyone listens to the Israelis with sadness and distress, they minimise, they blame failures on security for October 7th, and on it goes. To be fair I am increasingly convinced that many don't actually care about the welfare of those in Palestine either, it something like a cause they need to fight rather than concern.
The ceasefire has most definitely been broken - by the troops (you'll have to guess whose troops - as there is a censor on this thread that likes having my posts censored off if I put the name with its inverted commas).
On the Hidden Palestine Facebook group I've just read that last night:
"They've (those troops) already broken the ceasefire killing seven people. Drone fire killed 6 people as they were checking on a house in a suburb east of Gaza City and a separate airstrike killed another. The military said it had fired on people who crossed truce lines and approached its forces after ignoring call to turn back, of course without providing any evidence".
Those troops employed by Netanyahu don't do little things like providing "evidence"....guess they're going to be snipping and snapping at the Gaza province of Palestine bit by tiny bit in ways like that...."Ooh we know it's Gaza - but it's a truce line...it is .....yeah right".

Well I listen to Israelis and the situation with deep emotion. But I also feel the same about the Palestinian situation.
The region is cursed it seems to me. The warmongers and haters are in control.

You’re othering.
BTW - for clarification. That woman over there is being referred to - in isolation. I'm 72 myself and, in my case, that means "Whew - relief - not much longer before I'm free (ie in Heaven instead of on Earth)". It's in no way an ageist comment - as I could make them about myself if I was inclined too (and I do at myself each time I can't avoid looking in a mirror and wondering who that woman is that I see - because she no longer looks like me - darn it....).
It would be easier if people didn't take remarks personally that most certainly are not meant personally...
Goodness all this talk of ageism is a bit silly IMO. I'm coming up to 77, do I expect to live for decades more.? Absolutely not. Weiss is an extremely unpleasant Israeli extremist who promotes illegal settler expansion and has her eyes on Gaza. Does anyone really want to defend this horrible woman? Sadly there will be younger equally nasty extremists who will carry on her legacy of illegal expansion.

The so called civil war now being fought in Gaza between various factions is in fact a proxy war where some gangs are being funded by Israel.
Israel acknowledged that they were finding/arming some clans/gangs in Gaza back in July 2025.
These groups oppose Hamas, Hamas needs to disarm and be held to account for its actions on 7/10/2023 and since.
I have absolutely no sympathy for a terrorist organisation which uses innocent civilians (mainly women and children) as human shields whilst they are safe and sound in tunnels.
That's part of the problem thoughGG Netanyahu helped Hamas to become stronger to provide opposition to Fatah, then he arms clan gangs to oppose Hamas. Who will he arm to oppose the clan gangs if they succeed in taking over from Hamas? It's a dangerous game he's been playing badly and the Gazans have been pawns stuck in the middle.
Hamas and the arms clan gangs are not from Gaza ?
I don't think I have seen any sympathy for Hamas anywhere. They are a despicable group but I feel very much sympathy for the innocent Gazans.
I also have no sympathy for Netanyahu and his extreme right government but sympathy for the people of Israel and what they have suffered.
So, I’ve been reading about Hamas this morning.
As I remarked a couple of days ago- it is a funny old world when leaders are prepared to work with terrorists.
Apparently the WH has been in high level meetings between well known names of Trumps circle Whitkoff and Kushner and Hamas.
When asked about the Hamas involvement - Trumps reply was “well, they (Hamas) are standing because they do want to stop the problems, they’ve been open about it, and we gave them approval for a period of time”
So make of that what you will.
IMO after such a destructive and vicious war as this, people on both sides have been so brutalised and witness to such horror, normality for them will be very skewed. We must expect a long period of adjustment.m
Israelis suffered by the hands of Hamas , they want to kill all Jews
Whitewavemark2 the road to peace in the region will not be quick nor will it be easy.
It has been posted often on GN that the U.K. government had to talk to the IRA on the way to the Good Friday Agreement.
I deplore Hamas with every cell in my body, I struggle to move past the heinous acts of 7/10/23.
However, I am slowly coming round to the point that Hamas leaders (the cowardly ones living in luxury in ME) will have to be included in talks going forward.
I only hope that the Hamas terrorists on the ground appear in court and face justice for their crimes.

They repeat their intent to remove every Jew from the planet on SM still.
Something I struggle with, whereas my Jewish friends live in fear.
I read that Israel has stopped aid into Gaza, because the Palestinians are having real difficulty in identifying the Israeli remains and returning them to the bereaved.
One really shouldn’t be surprised given the level of destruction and chaos. The very least the Israelis could do is to send in a delegation to give them a hand in trying to find the remains.
Stooping aid will do nothing to help the bereaved.
Whitewave - "long period of adjustment" indeed for many.
My own mother was a child in Plymouth during World War 2 - and, as she put it, "down the shelters every night and running between it all to get to them". She never ever did "adjust" and died at 93 years old in 2020 never having done so. That certainly made for an awkward conversation in my sitting room one time - as my father and I were both talking with my German friend that had popped round for a visit and she said nothing to her at all. What she'd got against the Polish people too after that I never was quite clear on - but I had to do what probably amounted to saving the life of a young Polish kid around 2 years old one time (all right and tight and reunited with his father after I'd literally caught him whilst he was running away and tucked him under my arm) and she told me off for doing so and said I shouldnt have - because he was Polish!!!!! Errrm...it was a little kid.....all scrubbed up and cute-looking and obviously well looked-after apart from his little escapade....and she honestly thought I should have let him killed by all the nearby heavy traffic he was busily running towards!!!
Memories last - at least decades....and can get taken out on complete strangers that have done nothing wrong.
The IDF still occupy 53% of Gaza - and the plan is for the IDF to withdraw in two phases to a lasting security buffer zone.
But honestly listening to Netanyahu’s rhetoric at the weekend I feel very gloomy.
It is all going to fall at the first hurdle imo.

Yes, she is a very unpleasant woman indeed but a comment on GN hoping she would soon die is a very big step too far.She has family and friends just as we all do and as several other posters say, some are in ill health and around the same age.
Tbh it’s the sort of remark an ignorant teenager may make.
For what it’s worth, my opinion is by wishing someone dead, it reveals more about the one doing the wishing…
