Breaking news, midnight - Peace in the Middle East?

(1001 Posts)

US President Donald Trump has announced that "Israel and Hamas have both signed off on the first Phase of our Peace Plan"

"This means that ALL of the Hostages will be released very soon, and Israel will withdraw their Troops to an agreed upon line", Trump says on Truth Social

Trump is "considering travelling to the Middle East" in the coming days, according to the White House

Mediators from the US, Egypt and Qatar in Sharm El-Sheikh have been attempting to broker an agreement for a ceasefire in Gaza and a release of Israeli hostages still held by Hamas
The negotiations come two years and two days after Israel launched a military campaign in Gaza in response to the 7 October 2023 attack, in which Hamas-led gunmen killed about 1,200 people and took 251 others as hostages

At least 67,183 have been killed by Israeli military operations in Gaza since then, the Hamas-run health ministry says

Well, we'll have to see - but I so hope that tomorrow will bring clarity that indeed matters will move forward now to peace, and that its not a Trump claim that cannot be backed up

Crikey! and Netanyahu must have a death wish. He's apparently now accused China of hiding Hamas leaders.

China has retaliated by its map of the world now doesn't show a country called Israel - it's non-existent. It does show all of Palestine as being Palestine still.

If this is true China must not be happy with Israel. Bad move by Netanyahu. Not wise to rattle the tiger's cage.

In response to a tweet that asked, “Who controls the news” from another account, Kriel claimed the news is “96 per cent Jewish owned but not sure what percentage Zionist”.

When challenged on her comment, she continued to spread the antisemitic trope.

Kriel said: “I’m reliably informed that it’s 96 per cent Israeli controlled.”

She continued: “What... Israelis have no access to the internet? Most of us have been following the live-streaming of the genocide that way especially as 96 per cent of all media is Jewish owned.”

Daniel Sugarman, Director of Public Affairs for the Board of Deputies called the tweet a “prime example” of “virulent antisemitism.”

Sugarman said: “A proud self-declared ‘anti-racist’, previously a well-regarded headteacher, now an education consultant. Just casually and publicly coming out with Der Stürmer grade antisemitism.”

Government adviser, Tom Bennett OBE wrote on X/Twitter that Kriel’s comments were “A ghastly anti-semitic conspiracy theory.”

He told Kriel to delete her tweet: "take a while to reconsider your stance towards one of the most oppressed groups in history. It may be unintentional, but it contributes to a climate of fear, hatred and racism.”

Kriel’s tweets were still online at the time of publication.

Apologies for quoting such a long post but imo it’s an important one. Kreil has set out clearly anti semitic tropes. I will check but I don’t know what proportion of pupils at her school are Jewish. I’d be moving my children if Jewish

I’m also very concerned that a headteacher with anti semitic views has influence over children.

I hadn't a clue who she is, so I Googled her. She's a former headteacher, so nobody will feel forced to remove any children.

The comments were from 2024, so why are they being dragged up now?

Iam64 Wed 15-Oct-25 12:56:59

Does it matter when she said these things? She was reported as being a tough head with good results
The old trope about Jewish people controlling the media links to the one where they run all the banks.
Imagine that being said about Muslims or evangelical Christians

Because her comments were posted in lengthy posts and these are responses to that.

Are posters not allowed to post a different viewpoint?
If not, why not?

I've never heard of the woman but will investigate.

I am sorry that you have chosen not to address Kreil’s article.

I posted it because I feel that there needs much more balance in the media. We hear and see (rightly so) so much of the wrongs inflicted on Israel, but I am not aware of much if any publicity about the treatment of Palestinian prisoners and hostages. I think this needs addressing.

I have read this morning that a doctor imprisoned without trial by Israel has been release and is seriously ill in hospital with heart issues and convulsions as a result of the torture he received.

No one is innocent in this horror show, but the least we can try to be is balanced, and treat all news equally. Glossing over it will never work.

CariadAgain Wed 15-Oct-25 13:19:12

Yep....for sure...Whitewave.

Oreo Wed 15-Oct-25 14:31:04

Your posting of Kreils antisemitic ramblings is a strange way of showing that balance * Whitewavemark2* as there are no anti Arab or anti Muslim ramblings on these GN pages.
I do understand that you have very strong pro Palestinian sympathies but don’t fall for racist rants against Jews and Israel.

Oreo Wed 15-Oct-25 14:36:18

Is there an easier way to put a poster’s name in bold rather than asterisks, as I often do the wrong thing? Also, another question, I do this as others always seem to do it but is it acceptable to put a name in normal typeface?

David49 Wed 15-Oct-25 15:51:17

“Your posting of Kreils antisemitic ramblings is a strange way of showing that balance * Whitewavemark2* as there are no anti Arab or anti Muslim ramblings on these GN pages.”

Nor are there likely to be because any post criticizing Muslims is deleted as islamaphobic.

Maremia Wed 15-Oct-25 16:43:23

Criticising an individual wrong 'un, who happens to be Moslem, is not anti-islamic. Criticising an Israeli wrong 'un, is not anti-semitic.
This conflation practice is strong on these Threads.

No need to have a go at me!!!

I would like to see justice for all.

Ordinary Israelis can travel anywhere in the world and be interviewed by the press and we listen to their words with sadness and despair at their situation.

Ordinary Palestinians can travel no where and no one can hear their voices.

Who is to speak for them? People like Kriel.

Did you see the little Palestinian children with missing limbs on the news today. I think their happy faces, beautiful children and then the camera moving down to show the bandaged stamps where their legs had been spoke volumes. Israel is apparently preventing children getting out of Gaza for medical treatment. That too speaks volumes.

I cried, surely I'm not alone.

AGAA4 thank you, I'm feeling very emotional about it. I have 8 GC but the two youngest are similar ages to those little ones and I just can't imagine how anyone can block those children getting treatment.

Hmmmm....considering any post putting the inverted commas round a re-name of part of a country and the people that reside in it is deleted. So one could say it evens out - and I'd be glad of not having to find some other way of naming what I mean - as there's a couple of posters waiting to pounce and complain and have it deleted and hope we'll blame Gransnet for it - but I don't think it is Gransnet per se that is doing the censoring - they're just responding to those couple of people on this thread.

CariadAgain Wed 15-Oct-25 18:53:56

Yep...it is indeed very sad to see young children like that.

The bit that gets me most is those photos of children with absolutely stick thin limbs, ribs showing and very "old" eyes that have seen far too much.

Cariad, it's never easy to tell who the Zappers are. Some are upfront, and you'll see it on other Threads, saying Reported, and you'll notice that a post before them is deleted.
Just bear in mind that Shadows may also press the button.

Iam64 Wed 15-Oct-25 19:28:32

Just a word - the mods only delete a) if posts are reported and b) if posts breach gransnet guidelines
It may irritate, eg I’d like GSM back because despite usually disagreeing on news and politics, I valued her posts on those discussions. As for her kindness and willingness to give good legal advice - the forum is poorer without her.
She appears to have been subjected to frequent reports, so she is no more

Cariad - if you were deleted, you breached guidelines

That is probably true. The thing I dont understand is why Trump can't insist these children must be helped. He can enforce other things, he's a father can he not enforce this? Food for hungry children, medical treatment for sick or injured children. Id vote for his much wanted peace prize if he did that.
