Breaking news, midnight - Peace in the Middle East?

US President Donald Trump has announced that "Israel and Hamas have both signed off on the first Phase of our Peace Plan"

"This means that ALL of the Hostages will be released very soon, and Israel will withdraw their Troops to an agreed upon line", Trump says on Truth Social

Trump is "considering travelling to the Middle East" in the coming days, according to the White House

Mediators from the US, Egypt and Qatar in Sharm El-Sheikh have been attempting to broker an agreement for a ceasefire in Gaza and a release of Israeli hostages still held by Hamas
The negotiations come two years and two days after Israel launched a military campaign in Gaza in response to the 7 October 2023 attack, in which Hamas-led gunmen killed about 1,200 people and took 251 others as hostages

At least 67,183 have been killed by Israeli military operations in Gaza since then, the Hamas-run health ministry says

Well, we'll have to see - but I so hope that tomorrow will bring clarity that indeed matters will move forward now to peace, and that its not a Trump claim that cannot be backed up

I'm starting a thread on WWM banning. On news and politics as that is where WWM posted It has shocked me:

This may not be allowed, it could be deleted - especially if someone here reports it:

but it's my opinion we need to keep this thread for the topic

If that is what they are saying, it looks like an attempt to destroy the ceasefire.

They are to continue bombing until the Hostages are released

(And some other T's and C's - I'd have to recheck it but its there for all to see)

I recommend all access the Guardian or BBC constant updates, *as there are no firewalls*

and Al Jazeera (English)

and Democracy Now (an American news channel - but that presenter is scrupulously fair and even-handed).

Both channels can be found on YouTube.

CNN reported the bombing of a terrorist Hamas cell in Gaza. I had hoped that Hamas would leave the country but I guess that’s naive?

Allira Thu 09-Oct-25 23:01:05

I think so, ronib.
Like trying to cut the head off the Hydra.

Will Netanyahu resign? Not immediately but in the foreseeable future?

Wyllow3 Thu 09-Oct-25 23:21:18

I suspect Netanyahu will not survive the elections next year, but there are people just as bad as per, for example, occupying the West Bank.

I haven't has time to read enough to know if the West Bank is actually part of the discussions at all, anyone know?

Ordinary members of Hamas wont leave the country, but that doesn't necessarily mean it will lead to a regime that acts as Hamas have.

Ordinary Palestinians have not been free to speak out, and of course the Press have been banned from going in - surely that restriction cannot stay. New elections - well thats part of long term issues and I doubt "on the table" yet as much still being discussed.

Overall although its not been brought up much, I believe that Trump is under enormous amounts of pressure from the Saudi's and Qatar.

A snippet: 3 days ago Oman airways have removed Israel from its aerial images and replaced it with the State of Palestine.

This is significant as the US and Oman have a long record of cordial relationships.

If Oman, Saudi Arabia and Qatar decide to cool trade relationships with the USA ..

its not a good look for Trump nor all those in power in the USA whose wealth depend on the trade deals - of course heavily centred around oil still.

Trump's family businesses have huge amounts of money invested in the Middle East. It was Saudi money that got Kushner going. However, we have the start of peace in Gaza let us hope for Israel that the hostages are returned and for the Palestinians that they can start to have a normal life with food, water and shelter at the very least to begin with.

love0c Fri 10-Oct-25 07:51:38

Well if this actually comes off, I for one think it is absolutely brilliant! Beyond sad that some on here think otherwise.

CariadAgain Fri 10-Oct-25 08:11:09

Yay re Oman Airways.

Whatever happens now - I hadn't realised there literally isn't enough room for all the Palestine diaspora to return to their country. Think the figure I read was there are 7 million of them scattered across the world. Hence there simply isn't room literally for them all to return to the bits they've just about still got of Palestine. Tries to get my head round the thought of being in an equivalent situation of "If I was told Britain wasnt my country any more - a lot of it had got other people living there instead" as to how I'd feel at being shoved out of my own country....eek! Hard to get one's head around that fact.

Not believing otherwise lovOc, just worried about what has happened with the previous peace deals.

Nobel Peace Prize winner will be announced soon. Read a report saying that Norway was 'preparing'.

Didn’t Hamas offer to release all of the hostages soon after the attack if the IDL agreed not to invade? But the government refused?

It was a sticky time getting the plan agreed to by the Knesset last night, and no one thinks it will be a quick or easy route to a proper resolution, but positivity helps.

My friends in Israel said that it feels as though they may be able to begin to grieve after such a long time in suspended animation. So bitter-sweet.

love0c Fri 10-Oct-25 08:40:35

lixy Exactly! hoping and praying. So why oh why do some people want to try and bring it down then.

Fingers crossed that it's Norway then.

Have already seen stuff out there in the papers about how Trump is preparing and hoping for it to be him - to which I was feeling very aware of the comments I read on here yesterday of there literally isn't time for a "new" contender (him or otherwise) to try and "pull up at the table with their knife and fork out to eat".

Maremia Fri 10-Oct-25 10:02:46

Think it's a woman!

lixy Fri 10-Oct-25 10:11:03

Maria Corina Machado - a Venezuelan politician who has been fighting hard to keep democracy alive in Latin America.

Trump will have his day I’m sure, but not this year. Maybe he’ll settle the Ukrainian/Russian war in time to be nominated in January - here’s hoping.

Maremia Fri 10-Oct-25 10:16:55

Now that would be worth it. And also that this deal prevails.

ronib Fri 10-Oct-25 11:01:41

Reports now that the ceasefire has started but Israel will respond to any future threats. As I suppose it should but I hope the hostages and prisoners are finally released as planned.

Wyllow3 Fri 10-Oct-25 11:33:22

Great to see the enormous amount of support from Germany

www.theguardian.com/world/live/2025/oct/10/gaza-ceasefire-plan-israel-donald-trump-hamas-palestine-benjamin-netanyahu-middle-east-latest-news?filterKeyEvents=false&page=with%3Ablock-68e8d24e8f08a99f049279ee#block-68e8d24e8f08a99f049279ee

I'll believe its a real cease fire after a few hours and no more bombing.

But live in hope - this can only be temporary, there is too much to work out to know how things will work out.

But oh, may the hopes of those who have suffered so much, not be dashed. 🙏

Norway is preparing because the ceremony is held there, in Oslo.

Wyllow3 Fri 10-Oct-25 11:48:49

Well - the peace hasn't happened yet, its impossible to tell, despite all our hopes for the region - until more time passes - a mention could be made at the ceremony of "hopes for" but surely Trump could not expect more?

If outcomes are good for all the peoples in the area then its a "next year" matter?

Thinking of the parents and family of the hostages, not knowing if their loved ones will be returned alive or dead.It will be an ending, at the worst and to be able to bury their dead close by on Israeli soil will be something. For the live hostages it will be a wonderful reunion but all the hostages especially those kept for two years will need love and patience as they will suffer PTSD after an ordeal like that.

Smileless2012 Fri 10-Oct-25 13:30:31

Hoping and praying the cease fire holds and the Palestinians can be begin to live without fear.

AGAA4 Fri 10-Oct-25 13:33:29

Ceasefire is now in place say the IDF who have moved back to agreed line.
Palestinians are moving north again and aid trucks are surging into Gaza.
Hostages should be released by early next week.
Big relief all round.
