A very worthy recipient! Well done the panel.

Seems like an awful lot of people find it interesting to discuss the latest Nobel Peace Prize winner.

PaynesGrey Sun 12-Oct-25 10:38:57

The source of the wild/fight/what a baby quote is Andy Borowitz. He's an American comedian and author who satirizes the news for his column, 'The Borowitz Report.

Whenever the GNs lose interest, the thread will fade away. Just like other posts.

Oreo Sun 12-Oct-25 10:40:35

If you don’t think she deserves the prize Maremia maybe you weren’t being sarcastic after all when you said ‘not so saintly after all’.🤔
Not that being a 😇 is a requirement for the prize.

Oh, the Thread hasn't faded yet?

I’m sure you won’t believe it but I’ll give it a go. Otherwise, a short search for her +Israel will show you. www.filmsforaction.org/watch/shocking-hypocrisy-nobel-peace-prize-winner-supports-israels-genocide-and-trumps-war-on-venezuela/

I thought the fact that she wasn't Trump would be enough for everyone.
I actually think if Trump has been successful in this he deserves the prize, almost as if being deserving of the prize is quite a complex issue.

Oreo Sun 12-Oct-25 10:56:50

So what if she supports Israel, many people do! The alternative is supporting hamas.
And why not be happy with the US when they oppose Maduro and his thugs just as she and the Opposition do.

Maremia Sun 12-Oct-25 11:12:04

No, not quite so. There doesn't have to be an alternative. And that is the old 'conflation' strategy again.

Maremia Sun 12-Oct-25 11:13:33

I think it can be complex because of the number of candidates. Read somewhere that there were over a hundred in this selection.

" a notable recent statement from María Corina Machado to Donald Trump was after she won the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize:
She dedicated the Nobel Peace Prize “to the suffering people of Venezuela and to President Trump for his decisive support of our cause.”
She also said: “We are on the threshold of victory and today, more than ever, we count on President Trump … as our principal allies to achieve freedom and democracy.”
In a phone conversation, she reportedly expressed gratitude to Trump and told him how thankful the Venezuelan people are “for what he’s doing … around the world for peace, freedom, democracy.”

My DH just showed me a video on Facebook where Trump is saying that Maria Larissa telephoned him and said she was accepting the Noble Prize in his behalf as he deserved it. If it's true that's a slap in the face for the Nobel panel.

Because Facebook and social media in general is such a reliable source of factual information?

Wot!!!!! Your suggesting it’s not 😱

. . . and Trump is so convinced himself that he deserves the Nobel Peace Prize that it would not surprise me at all if he assumes that the actual recipient believes that too. It is how his mind works - "Everyone says I am the greatest [at whatever incredible achievement he is imagining for himself] "

I disagree Oreo. There is also the option of supporting neither side. Both sides have been shown to have committed crimes against humanity.

Well said!

I also find it refreshing that people realise there are lots of things going on in the world not always covered by the media...

I agree with you Magenta. I wasn't aware that people had to sign up to support one side or other. Israel/Hamas aren't Liverpool/Everton or Rangers/Celtic.

It's possible to be critical and objective.

Oreo Mon 13-Oct-25 17:05:19

Not if you’re Jewish there isn’t. In any case who could support hamas on here?
Being sad for the Palestinians is one thing but not hamas!

Tbh I don’t care, if he manages to stop other wars as well as the one in Gaza then he’ll deserve the prize next year.

I agree Magenta, not supporting Israel is not supporting Hamas. There was an Israeli man being interviewed this morning who didn't support what Netanyahu has done and certainly wasn't a Hamas supporter either.

He said that had Netanyahu acted sooner in the interest of the hostages, he believed his cousin would still be alive.

Of course it's possible to be critical and objective, even if you're Jewish. Many Jewish writers and critics are objective, just as anybody is capable of being objective about their own "clan" if they put their mind to it.

Oreo Mon 13-Oct-25 18:34:51

There wasn’t any other way of getting to hamas and hounding them out of being a ruling body in Gaza.Even after everything they are still trying to cling on.It had to be done.

Some expected BN to be a miracle maker! But you can understand those who lost loved ones to the vile hamas will be critical.
