........to throw in his ten pence worth about Gaza and fulfil his allotted role as fawning acolyte to President Trump in return for being allowed to sit at the Big Table.

Might be nice if Sir Keir could stay in the UK long enough to get to grips with problems on the home front. He always seems to be flitting abroad!

I’m pleased to see that you accept that the place of the UK PM is at a summit this important ronib

We really don’t feature on the global stage at all these days. Frankly it’s embarrassing. Meanwhile Trump for all his frightening nuttiness does appear to act as a catalyst on the world stage. Our days of influence are long gone.

I agree.

But always wondered why we did, as by population at least, we are tiny.

Trump is out performing everyone. Not least because he can.
He doesnt have to answer, and doesnt to 28 Courtries or however many, before he makes a move.
He doesnt seem to have to have endless meetings.

I am surprised though how much ability he does seem to have.
What he pulled off, quite frankly, I wasnt sure he had it all in him.

The EU has gone past being workable.
Especially in anything like an emergency.
Give them 5 years to work on something gone wrong, and then they may have come up with something.
Things dont work like that
Unless you are talking about renaming a sausage roll or something. Or lightbulbs.

And where was the UN? [I dont read all threads so dont know if that has been covered already].

Wasnt all this a UN job?

Trump can’t bear the spotlight on anybody else, he even does down and humiliates his own deputy and supporters. It’s one of his most unattractive traits.

escaped Tue 14-Oct-25 09:25:28

It's not just Starmer treated like that though.
Did you see the 26 second handshake between Macron and Trump, gripping each other and pulling back and forth? Ending in triumph for Ttump and a Macron glare at being humiliated. (As if Macron hadn't got enough trouble going on in Fance).

Here’s the bit where DT stands in front of Starmer who didn’t get a chance to speak. Starmer’s face!! 🤣

We watched Donald Trump’s speech at teatime. He was thanking a long list of leaders from loads of countries who were involved in the peace deal. Each was spoken to individually saying what good people and great friends they were.

They all stayed where they were with DT at centre stage. Then he said he would like to thank the British PM, Keir Starmer and Starmer stepped forward to join him with a sickly grin on his face. DT then kind of guided him back to his place. It was so funny. 🤣🤣

Oh that was so embarrassing, to be left to last to be thanked (I thought he was doing it alphabetically order, but thanked Germany near the last also).
I think KS was getting ready to give a speech but was side buffed by DT. KS looked furious.
Didn’t look good for us.

Interesting, we need an Alistair Campbell in Labour, even I wish the Conservatives had some Rory Stewart, Alan Clerk types. We need an opposition with integrity 🙈

I agree that Labour needs a good comms team.

Cannot agree on Alastair Campbell though 🤷‍♀️

As a natural Conservative I am politically homeless. Would love to see some new blood come through, more left of right than far right (if you see what I mean 🤷‍♀️)

GrannyGravy13 Tue 14-Oct-25 08:23:51

He was a member of the Labour Party before 1993 according to Wiki

He is on record as saying he wouldn’t serve under Boris Johnson.

He announced his resignation on 3/10/2019

He withdrew his candidacy for London Mayor on 6/05/2020 due to the election being postponed for Covid.

The constant cold critical negativity about Starmer is increasingly tedious

The constant cold critical negativity about Farage is increasingly tedious too.

Farage isn’t representing the UK on the world stage Teazel2. It is irrational to let one’s personal views cloud one’s reasoning about whether the UK should be represented by our elected leader on that stage, whatever our personal thoughts about him or her are.

He is not representing the UK yet but in four years time………

That’s not relevant to a discussion about the importance of the PM’s attendance at a summit in 2025?

Johnson took away the whip after the Brexit vote.

Whitewavemark2 Tue 14-Oct-25 08:13:09

Yes! Stewart got thrown out by Johnson over Brexit, alongside almost the entire intellectual, principled side of the Tory party.

It has never recovered imo and has steadily gone down hill since until we see the sad little party they have be one today.

Stewart is certainly a man of principle - he like many, many others (me included) was alarmed and very worried when Johnson became PM. He immediately resigned from the cabinet.

Sorry to digress

I really like Rory Stewart actually.
I'd like to see/hear more of him.

I like him, not sure that he is a natural Conservative though.

Maybe that’s why he left the party?

Didn’t Johnson throw him out of the party along with a lot of other good MP’s?

Not according to Google.

He announced he wouldn’t stand in the next election, after losing the leadership election, and ran for London Mayor as an independent.

But that's the problem Iam64. Obviously he needs to keep the remaining members happy, but he needs to do something about keeping the Reform target seats and winning over a few non-members.

There have been some horrendous mistakes, but there has also been an unprecedented amount of negative spin ... and people are believing it. They really need to make sure people know about achievements.

This is becoming a habit, I agree with you 👍

Yes, Maybe since early 2022. Also the USA one (though obviously that's not A.C).

I also have listened to Pod Save America, Lincoln Project, The Newsagents (and USA version), Americast, MeidasTouch, Main Justice Prosecuting Donald Trump... and others - but not all of them all the time.
Ukrainecast is also worth a go.

Yes, and they are both incredibly knowledgable and I think respected.

Iam - I never would have thought I'd say "what we need is an Alistair Campbell" because I always saw him as the devil!
Ha ha. Now I see it!
Yes, sadly we really do...

But unfortunately it's because we need words of one syllable and three word catchphrases.

Do you listen to The Rest is Politics? He comes across as a pretty amazing person and is very open about his depression etc. Labour really do need someone that can communicate with the electorate though. My new Labour local MP’s are very good communicators; I wish there was someone with a higher profile that could do that.

The country imo needs a jolly good tidy up

asybee even in the beautiful countryside rubbish is dumped ☹ Litter thrown out of cars, all kinds of trash dumped in woods etc.
It is a sad state of affairs.
